  • U.S. Marines Thank Lebanese Military for Efforts

Actually most lebanese americans are christian if you really want to know. Secondly, what makes someone "truly" american?
Im french-lebanese. I dont happen to live in france and still maintain ties with lebanon but it doesnt mean im not truly french. I love france(thats probably the first time that line has been said on the site :P )and fully support it, i would gladly serve in the military if the need arises someday, i dont quite agree with the way the country is being directed but elections are up and things may be looking to get better. Am i french enough? If someone doesnt reside in their country doesnt mean they arent patriotic or not "truly" a citizen. Many might have been complaining that it took long because they were scared(believe it or not) during the war and wanted to leave quickly. Believe me it wasnt very pleasant during the bombings, i would know as i was there. Now i didnt really get scared as i lived in lebanon for many years and im used to bombs being dropped, but many foreign lebanese were in lebanon for the summer with their children and many of them arent used to have bombs being dropped over their heads. Much like any average citizen in america would get scared if bombs are being dropped because it would probably be the first time it happens to them. So it would be expected that some would be cranky and annoyed that it took a couple of weeks before people could get out of the country.

There were many instances in the history of lebanon which led to mass emigrations, mainly from christian lebanese who were being oppressed and had the financial capabilities to leave the country and settle somewhere else.

Nasrallahs death is very bad for israel and the west. Believe it or not, nasrallah is seen as a moderate in hezbollah. I dont think it would be great to replace him with more hardliners, which would surely be the case if he is assassinated. Hezbollah has to be destroyed with him at the helm and no one else should be able to take his place.

The military will divide if they take any action against one side. The military like the population is divided into many sects, those sects will never raise their weapon against the people that they support. In lebanon, if you are sunni, 90% of the time you are supporting the future movement led by hariri jr. If you are druze ou support Walid jumblatt and idolize him as if he were god. If you are shiite you are 99% a hezbollah or amal supporter and they are the same crap with a different name. The only group that seems to be able to somewhat think for themselves and formulate their own opinions are the christians which happens to be the reason why they are so divided and alot of tension is there. Technically they want the same thing but the past and what happened during the civil war is what mainly divides them, as well as some of their stances towards hezbollah. So basically the military cant take a side or else the military itself will collapse and the country will lose whatever little restraint it may have.

If you count lebanese living abroad, the christians still make up a majority. HOwever, lebanese abroad arent allowed to vote, so until that changes(hopefully it will soon) then we will remain a minority.

Well you are right that both sides shouldnt trust foreign powers. But March 14 is forced into requiring outside help because of hezbollah and the rest of the pro-syrians. They are getting help from outside forces and if march 14 doesnt do the same the pro-syrians will become more powerful/influential and they will win.
To be honest if i had a choice between having american influence in my country or iranian/syrian influence i would choose american in a heartbeat, isnt much of a decision to make really.

There was a large outcome oof people at this rally, and its because some of their demands are legitamate. Im not trying to say hezbollah should take control, on the contrary i hate them and they will destroy lebanon. But the current western-backed government(apart from the Lebanese Forces christian party) were all syrian collaborators. They are all corrupt, they have lifestyles fit for billionaires. When you see how much debt lebanon is in, it is because of those people, they stole money from the government for 15 years and that is why they are resisting an audit which is called for by the pro-syrians. They are both bad, but the lesser of the two evils is definately the western-backed government and not this opposition.

The lebanese government is paralysed at the moment. The president is a puppet of syria and until he is taken down nothing will move forward. The parliament has limited power as he simply can veto anything they do.
The president is not looking out for his country he is just trying to save his as*.
And please dont try and lump the blame on lebanese. Who the hell do you think the christians were fighting for 15 or so years? The palestinians and syrians. And what did the world do to help us? We are a small country, and the christians are only roughly 40% of lebanon, yet we fought against both the palestinians and the syrians. It is understandable that the lebanese will lose without support against enemies like that. Look at what is happening in iraq, us troops are getting killed everyday..this is what happens when you deal with terrorists, they will not stop trying to fight. So if the US,whose army is by far the greatest in the world, cant deal with terrorists in iraq, you expect the lebanese to successfully battle against syria, hezbollah and their backers iran?

There is alot of weapons in lebanon, most families tend to have mini arsenals of weapons...After the disbanding of the militias at the end of the civil war most people kept their weapons instead of handing them over..
The syrian invasion happened unofficially in 1975, they were officially asked to help in 1976 which was probably the biggest mistake lebanon ever made. We saw them entering as friends only to find out that they would be the major factor in the war lasting that long. They did help against the palestinians in the beginning only to begin siding with pretty much every side there was only to create more turmoil. They werent with anyone but themselves and they spent the whole time pitting every lebanese against the other.
The christians at the time were fighting against the palestinians. all that is heard about the palestinians is the sabra and chatila massacres. They never mention any massacres they did to us christians because it doesnt matter to the west when the oppressed people are christian.

Thats just a small list of the civilians murdered by the syrians and palestinians.
You can also find pictures(warning some are pretty graphic)
Jumblatt during the war was a puppet of syria, he will suck up to whoever the biggest power broker is to ensure that his tiny druze community gets treated well.

No it was his uncle who was assassinated 25 years ago and it probably was the main factor in the sabra and chatila "massacres" that occurred shortly after(in my opinion they deserved it)

Of course they undermine the prime minister, they give legitimacy to hezbollah by making israel seem as the "bad guy" to the lebanese people. I mean when i went to school there they used to scare us with sonic booms virtually every day, whats the point really?

They probably confiscated a couple of weapons. Just like the christians in the civil war... they didnt disarm them all, practically every family has a small arsenal to wage their own personal war.
