  • Russian concert hall attack prompts renewed concern over ISIS-K

    03/25/2024 7:30:38 AM PDT · by LouAvul · 12 replies
WASHINGTON (TND) — In the wake of the deadly terror attack on a concert hall in the Moscow suburbs that killed at least 130 people, national security experts in Russia, the Middle East, Western Europe and the U.S. are focusing their concerns on the group claiming responsibility for the attack: ISIS-K. Americans may recognize the name from the August 2021 Afghanistan withdrawal, after the group took credit for the suicide bombing at the Kabul airport which killed 13 U.S. service members and around 170 Afghan civilians. However, it has been waging its own jihad in the region for nearly a...
  • Source for E-Books?

    03/04/2024 6:14:24 AM PST · by LouAvul · 45 replies
I use the Gutenberg Project and have downloaded some classics from them. I'm looking for a source for modern, popular books that I can pay a fee, download to my laptop, and the book is mine even if I terminate a subscription with the source. Kindle says if I terminate the subscription I lose the book. Besides, with Kindle, can you use a generic computer or is it a Kindle compatible device?
  • Smart TV brand that does not pimp their ads on the home screen?

    02/22/2024 4:15:51 AM PST · by LouAvul · 101 replies
My Sony flat screen TV is old and is rebooting at least once a day. And the pimps at Sony have overridden my "preferences" to hawk their "woke" alerts and advertisements. All this on the home screen. Since I'm going to upgrade anyway, is there a brand that doesn't pimp the Psuedo Cause du jour when it fires up?
  • President Joe Biden wins South Carolina primary by over 90% following schedule change

President Joe Biden handily won the Democrat's first official primary election Saturday night, with the race called by the Associated Press 20 minutes after the polls closed. Biden held an insurmountable lead over challengers Rep. Dean Philips, D-Minn, and self-help guru Marianne Williamson, commanding around 96% of the vote (with two thirds of the votes counted). "As I said four years ago, this campaign is for everyone who has been knocked down, counted out and left behind. That is still true today," Biden said in a statement released by his campaign. "With more than 14 million new jobs and a...
  • Fake funeral panhandler scammers caught in Tulsa

    11/30/2023 4:50:00 AM PST · by LouAvul · 21 replies
TULSA, Okla. (KTUL) — A group of panhandlers caught by police allegedly committed fraudulent activity in Tulsa. According to the Tulsa Police Department, five individuals were cited for soliciting without a vest after holding up fake funeral signs of an 8-year-old boy and collecting hundreds of dollars from Tulsans. ............ “They're holding signs up. The signs are saying they basically need money to raise for a funeral for a child that had died in their family. I guess in a car wreck. They're unable to prove that that’s even a fact," said Danny Bean, TPD public information officer. ......... “We’ve...
  • Republican Congress? Good or bad?

    11/21/2023 7:11:39 AM PST · by LouAvul · 10 replies
There are comments on another forum insisting that with few exceptions, Republicans in Congress are doing their job concerning illegal immigration. Specifically, The Mitt Romneys, John McCains, POS Bushes. There are some. Not the majority. The Republican Party disapproves of illegal aliens. We had the lowest illegal alien rate of crossing during President Trump’s administration, the lowest in 40 years. Now we are at an all-time high again due to this Democrat administrations actions of allowing people to cross our border without merit. I've not responded because I'd like to get your perspective. I'm of the opinion that our GOPe...
  • Many parents don't know when kids are behind in school. Are report cards telling enough?

    11/15/2023 1:00:00 PM PST · by LouAvul · 20 replies
Nearly nine out of 10 parents believe their child is performing at grade level despite standardized tests showing far fewer students are on track, according to a poll released Wednesday by Gallup and the nonprofit Learning Heroes. Report cards, which many parents rely on for a sense of their children's progress, might be missing the whole picture, researchers say. Without that knowledge, parents may not seek opportunities for extra support for their children. “Grades are the holy grail,” said Bibb Hubbard, founder and president of Learning Heroes. “They’re the number one indicator that parents turn to to understand that their...

  • Internet malware scam question

    09/14/2023 9:24:25 AM PDT · by LouAvul · 30 replies
I cleaned my computer cache (IE files; Internet "history"; and CC cleaner). I then went online to Walmart link. Then my computer screen had the dreaded pseudo Microsoft warning: "You have malware; call our number..." There were several flashing banners, etc. I shut the computer down; rebooted; cleaned cache; etc. I didn't get the scam from the Walmart website, did I? Microsoft's website says this is a common scam currently, and my Malwarebytes didn't catch it. Neither did AVG. Did this piggyback something? Is it a time release program? I was on Zillow, Freerepublic, 3 gun forums, etc. thnx

  • American patriotism remains near historic lows this Fourth of July

WASHINGTON (TND) — On this Fourth of July, the percentage of people who say they’re proud to be an American is near historic lows. According to the results of a new Gallup poll, only 4 in 10 adults say they are “extremely proud to be an American.” "I feel like it’s declined. Like, just wearing the flag sometimes I feel like it’s sometimes a little bit mixed-up feelings," said Daniel, a Washington, D.C. resident visiting the National Mall on the holiday. Gallup's data shows Republicans are consistently more likely than Democrats and independents to express "extreme pride in being American,"...

  • 'Operation Pit Stop' provides free spays, neuters for 'bully breeds'

TULSA, Okla. — If you have a pit bull or pit bull mix and haven’t had them spayed or neutered, now is the chance to get it done free of charge. The program, “Operation Pit Stop,” is an effort to try and control the massive number of “bully breed” dogs dominating shelters across Oklahoma and the nation. When pet owner Lisa Fowler heard of the program through social media, she jumped at the chance to get her dog, Freya, spayed. “I think it’s great,” Fowler said. “She got fixed, she got microchipped, she got her shots updated. If you have...
  • Remember the asbestos issue?

    05/24/2023 6:55:03 AM PDT · by LouAvul · 63 replies
I guess it's still around. I worked at a filling station in the early 60s and they did a lot of brake work. I didn't realize brakes were made with asbestos. I worked for pop's construction company and we did quite a bit of demolition. I knew there was some insulation with asbestos, but it was also in drywall and joint compound. And it's still around. I didn't realize that. It wasn't outlawed till the late 70s/1980 and lots of buildings are still standing with asbestos building materials. Apparently, as long as it's encapsulated it's not an issue. From my...
  • Federal agencies spend billions on weaponry

    04/28/2023 6:14:24 AM PDT · by LouAvul · 24 replies
WASHINGTON (TND) — Billions of dollars have been spent over the past few decades to arm federal agencies with more agents, guns, ammunition and military-style equipment. Founder of Open the Books Adam Andrzejewski joined The National Desk’s Jan Jeffcoat Friday to discuss the issue. “Here's what we found in the books, we found in the latest audit that 103 federal agencies had purchased guns ammunition and military-style equipment,” he said. “What's interesting is that only 27 of those federal agencies are traditional law enforcement agencies. We found 76 traditional paper-pushing regulatory agencies.” Andrzejewski’s investigation found some alarming statistics when it...
  • Man arrested in Ralph Yarl shooting has 'racist tendencies' like all 'stock American Christian' men, grandson claims

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (TND) — Andrew Lester, 84, is accused of shooting 16-year-old Ralph Yarl after the Black teenager appeared at the front door of the older man's Kansas City, Missouri home. It's a story that has gripped the nation, especially now that similar shootings have occurred, including one involving the killing of a 20-year-old woman in New York who was shot after pulling into a 65-year-old man's driveway. The cases have also reignited the ever-ongoing debate over gun control in the United States. Now, a member of Lester's family, his grandson, is offering up information on the 84-year-old shooting...

  • For all you shooters: How to determine the actual noise reduction of hearing protection?

    03/10/2023 7:44:00 AM PST · by LouAvul · 51 replies
It's a rather controversial topic among shooters as there isn't much consensus on how to do it. There's a formula for constant noise, like one would experience while operating a bulldozer 8 hours a day, etc. That formula, IIRC, is NRR (the noise reduction of muffs, for example) minus 7. That result divided by 2. But that formula doesn't apply to short duration, instantaneous noise as in a gun shot. If the shooter is wearing electronic muffs with the NRR of 30dB, and he's shooting a firearm that produces 175dB, then the dB noise reaching his ears is 145dB? Or...
