The UN is withdrawing all its international staff from the Libyan capital Tripoli following a mob attack on its offices. UN buildings and some foreign missions were targeted by angry crowds following a Nato air strike that reportedly killed a son of Col Gaddafi. A UN official told the BBC its staff would withdraw from Libya and the decision would be reviewed next week.

Women arrested by the Egyptian police during protests in Cairo's Tahrir Square were subjected to forced 'virginity tests', according to Amnesty International. Eighteen demonstrators were detained after army officers cleared the square on March 9 at the end of weeks of protest. Amnesty today said that the women had been beaten, given electric shocks and then subjected to strip searches while being photographed by male soldiers. They were then given 'virginity checks' and threatened with prostitution charges if medics ruled they had had sex, according to the charity.

Accounts as to how the four-month-old had survived were lost in translation - but it is believed she was plucked helpless from the rubble in Ishinomaki, in the state of Miyagi. Against the odds, she was rescued apparently safe and unharmed after being spotted by a member of Japan's Self-Defence Force. CAIRO (AFP) – Unknown saboteurs attacked an Egyptian pipeline supplying gas to Jordan, forcing authorities to switch off gas supply from a twin pipeline to Israel, an official told AFP. The attackers used explosives against the pipeline in the town of Lihfen in northern Sinai, near the Gaza Strip, the official said. It was initially thought the pipeline to Israel was attacked.
