VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) -- A Navy tradition has caught up with the repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" rule on gays serving openly in the U.S. military. The Navy said two women shared the coveted "first kiss" Wednesday when the USS Oak Hill returned home to its Virginia base. Marissa Gaeta of Pacerville, Calif., descended from the ship and shared a quick kiss with her partner, Citlalic (SEET-lah-leek) Snell of Los Angeles. The crowd screamed and waved Navy flags around them. Both women are fire controlmen in the Navy. They met at training school and have been dating...

Rams guard Harvey Dahl disagreed with the holding penalty called against him late in the St. Louis-Cincinnati matchup, and told the referee as much in a colorful manner—while the ref's mic was still open and broadcasting to the Edward Jones Dome. That earned him another penalty and sent CBS announcers Greg Gumbel and Dan Dierdorf racing to see who could apologize first.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Southern Baptist Convention's publishing division is recalling pink Bibles, saying some of the money raised through their sale was being given to Planned Parenthood. LifeWay Christian Resources no longer markets the pink-bound version of the Holman Christian Standard Bible and is recalling copies it sold, according to The Tennessean (http://tnne.ws/u90K40). A portion of the purchase price went to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The Komen foundation issued a statement in which it said all proceeds from the Bible sales were going to breast cancer screenings and expressed disappointment in LifeWay's decision. LifeWay's move came after...

Researchers from the University and the Mayo Clinic in Arizona have developed a vaccine that dramatically reduces tumors in a mouse model that mimics 90 percent of human breast and pancreatic cancer cases—including those resistant to common treatments. The vaccine, described this week in the early edition of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, reveals a promising new strategy for treating cancers that share the same distinct carbohydrate signature, including ovarian and colorectal cancers.

The race for the Republican nomination may be coming down to Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney, but in the contest for the Iowa caucuses, their high-profile battle might still turn out to be a sideshow. The national party has spent the last two weeks resigning itself to a choice between the former speaker and the former Massachusetts governor. But Iowa Republicans may end up choosing between Gingrich and Representative Ron Paul. In every post-Thanksgiving poll but one, Paul has been neck and neck for second place in Iowa. In most of them, he has lagged well behind the soaring speaker,...

WASHINGTON — Jon Huntsman became the first Republican candidate to snub a planned GOP candidates’ debate moderated by Donald Trump, with his campaign saying Republicans deserve "a serious discussion of the issues." With that jab at what is already being called "’The Apprentice’ Debate," Huntsman continued an effort to present himself as a serious-minded alternative in the GOP race. To that end, Huntsman’s campaign said in the same press release that the former Utah governor would accept an invitation from Newt Gingrich to participate in a Lincoln-Douglas-style debate in New Hampshire this month.

Jonathan Orr has been waiting for this day for seven years. “When do you actually get to drink history?” asked Orr, waiting with his three young children just feet from the front counter of The Beer Growler in Avondale Estates. Sunday marked the first day that some cities in Georgia could legally sell alcohol on that day. After 12:30 p.m. grocery stores, convenience stores and liquor stores could start selling alcohol in least 18 cities in Cherokee, Clayton, DeKalb, Fulton and Gwinnett counties. The Beer Growler opened at noon and soon after was buzzing with people waiting, chatting and deciding...

(CNSNews.com) - At the close of business on Tuesday, the debt of the federal government exceeded $15 trillion for the first time--with the largest single owner of the publicly held portion of that debt being the Federal Reserve. Over the past year, as the Federal Reserve massively increased its holdings of U.S. Treasury securities and entities in China marginally decreased theirs, the Fed surpassed the Chinese as the top owner of publicly held U.S. government debt. In its latest monthly report, the Federal Reserve said that as of Sept. 28, it owned $1.665 trillion in U.S. Treasury securities. That was...

You take them where you can get them, right? So goes the presidential campaign of Minnesota Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann. Following Tuesday night’s CNN Western Republican debate, Bachmann made a surprise appearance on Fox News Channel’s “On the Record” with long-time Vegas entertainer Wayne Newton. That’s where Newton revealed he would be supporting the Minnesota congresswoman’s candidacy. “I watched the entire debate, and I don’t have to tell you how proud I was of this lady because not only did she hold her own, but she kind of stood alone and I’m not talking about being female,” Newton said. “I’m...

Godfather's Pizza of Omaha started with rapid growth, head-spinning profits and a $300 million buyout. But then profits crashed. Franchise holders were in revolt, complaining that they had been abandoned, weathering three different presidents in four months. Bigger competitors, especially Pizza Hut, woke up to diners' preference for thicker pizza. Bankers got nervous about loaning money for new locations, stifling the chain's once-rapid expansion. By 1986, Godfather's was a troubled, minor division of Pillsbury Co., losing money, bloated with unprofitable locations, facing an uncertain future.

It’s amazing how a person’s media profile can change in just a year. Joe Barton has done a complete 180 in the eyes of many Americans, particularly poker players. If you remember, it was just 53 weeks ago the Texas Republican stood up at the congressional hearings investigating the BP oil spill and environmental disaster and Joe Barton apologized to British Petroleum for having to sit and answer for their destruction of the US Gulf Coast. Fast forward to Friday and Joe Barton is riding high among the poker playing public after he released his Internet Gambling Prohibition, Poker Consumer...

Hundreds of thousands of anti-government protesters rallied across Yemen on Sunday, demanding that President Ali Abdullah Saleh's powerful sons and other members of his inner circle leave the country. Saleh is currently in Saudi Arabia receiving treatment for severe wounds he suffered in an attack on his palace early this month. His two sons, Ahmed and Khaled, both command military units and have played a crucial role in protecting their father's regime and keeping his grip on power in his absence.
