  • Could Eating Less Help You Live Longer? Calorie restriction and intermittent fasting both increase longevity in animals, aging experts say. Here’s what that means for you.

That’s great. I hope you live to a healthy 105. I couldn’t do that because I love food too much

I know. It's not for everyone.

By the way, I'm not sure I want to live to 105 unless I'm in great health. In fact, I know I don't :-).

I've always leaned toward trying to watch calories but nowhere close to 1000 calories a day. It is pretty severe but with good reason, in my case. I spent three years on dialysis and, through my own research, determined that, among many other health benefits, reduced calories and a plant-based diet might cause my kidneys to recover some function -- at least enough to get me off of dialysis after three years.

I started the diet, among a few other lifestyle changes, and got exactly what I expected. It resulted in a huge improvement in my kidney function, enough to get me off dialysis -- including several other positive changes.

I love food, or used to. But I love not being hooked up to a dialysis machine even more :-)!

Mind if I ask - how did this affect your LDL/HDL and insulin sensitivity or other parameters?

I'm really not sure. My prior medical issues (before diet changes) keep me in a doctor's office for routine follow-up checks at least once every couple of months. Those visits almost always include blood tests and full lab reports. Other than the issues related to my prior medical condition, my other levels are always in the normal range -- including cholesterol and glucose levels.

While my overall average is about 1000 calories a day, and I avoid meat and processed foods (especially processed foods), I will go "off diet" once or twice in a two-week period. Otherwise, I stay primarily on target.

Problem is we all die of something. Is adding those years risking a worse death? For example, perhaps you have a heart attack and die or you follow this and get 4 years but along comes cancer or something worse.

As someone who has followed a very intense, primarily no-meat, calorie-restricted diet since 2016, I can tell you the question is NOT adding more years, but adding more HEALTHY years.

It works for me! At almost 80 and living on a 1000-calorie-a-day diet for 8 years, I'm still very active, walk three to five miles a day, and continue to work full-time.

I started this for medical reasons. It worked better than expected.

While I fully understand it is not for everyone, it has changed my life. I no longer "live to eat" but "eat to live."

    You should try it.

    Jeez sir...whatcha thinking?

Sadly, Trump's hiring choices are mostly duds.

That's been the pattern since he took office.

Does anybody really expect that to change??

He’s basically phoning the children and telling them not to do anything else stupid until he gets back home.

    You may have a point.

He's telling them that he's the main provider of "stupid," and he needs a monopoly and the room to release his own version of "stupid."

Of course, there's no guarantee he'll be coming back home again -- ever.

We should probably stop saying we need Trump to save the country. I think a second Trump term would be more accurately compared to giving a terminal cancer patient a drug that extends their life for a while before the cancer does them in anyway.

    We sure agree!

It's going to get worse no matter who wins -- the only question is what parts will be worse.

This is not much different than the early 70s. We had Nixon, who would make the changes that LBJ had heaped on us, and the Republicans let the Dems and media take him out. This led to the weak man Ford, followed by what we thought was the worst president of our republic, Jimma Carter (boy, were we wrong).

And then, along came a "savior." Ronald Reagan and his brilliant "Morning in America." It was an amazing and quick transition. Who could imagine we might feel proud of ourselves and our country again? He certainly was not perfect, but the best in our century, for sure.

That's what it will take. Sadly, it ain't in the cards this time around.

Lol, OK, you want it to be all $5,000 drones so in your world, so it will be.

Okay. You seem to be so good with numbers. Let's take a closer look at the back of the envelope numbers.

    1. 99% shot down. 1% got through = 900 airborne devices from Iran. Average cost per device = $250,000
    2. Your quainty numbers for Iran devices. 310 devices
    3. Average cost per antimissile device for Israel: $1,500,000 (a well-used number for defense intercept missiles. Patriots are $4,000,000 each). Two antimissiles to shoot down one incoming.
    4. Let's round up your number to adjust for 1. above to 400 devices from Iran.
    5. Israel/US/UK/Jordon shot roughly 800 devices (400 X 2) at a cost of $1,500,00 each
    6. Iran spent: $100,000,000 (a small part of the $4,000,000,000 in cash we shipped to them)
    7. Israel spent a whopping $1,200,000,000!

Israel spent 12 times Iran to stop the 400 devices!

Tell me again, who came out ahead.

Tell me again, how long Israel/US/UK can continue this while we scour the world for missiles and bullets??

The so-called mightiest nations in the world can't even stop a bunch of turban-head camel jocks from stopping our ships with missiles. Pray to tell; please explain how we're winning.

    Sorry, I don't get it.

You can believe the deep state, US media, and Israel if you wish.

As I say...everyone is different. Protein seems to be my main requirement...too many carbs in nuts so I cut back to pumpkin seeds only...I am playing around with my diet again. I do know as we age we need LESS calories. :*))

We sure are all different. For weight control, the primary consideration is total calories per day. For me, at 1000 calories per day, I really don't worry about fats, sweets, or carbs solely for weight control. I certainly am concerned about nutrition, and my primarily veggie and nut diet seems to do the trick.

By the way, my nuts are almonds, and a generous handful is less than 2 gms. So, no big impact.

Along with the many doctors I see, I'm a firm believer that exercise and diet are the keys to a healthy life and aging well. The older we get the more important it becomes.

They hit 99% of the ones they aimed for. Ones that weren’t going to hit anything didn’t need to be targeted.

They also forced Israel to shoot up to a billion dollars, shooting down a few hundred $5000 drones.

Question: Iran is spending a few million to launch mostly cheap drones before sending over the kill shots, while Israel is spending billions. How many of these volleys can Israel sustain?

Answer: Not many -- just like the Ukies

It's called war of attrition. He who has the most bullets wins.

Do you not eat ANY chicken, fish, beef, pork?

I'll have a small helping of chicken perhaps once a week and less frequently fish. I very seldom eat beef or pork, though. I get what little protein I need primarily from a protein shake, but I don't overdo it on protein. 50gms/day for my body size is adequate.

My diet consists primarily of raw veggies and nuts, with a decent helping of sweets to satisfy my cravings. I avoid processed foods like the plague. I do go off the wagon eating out about once a week -- but usually salads.

It's a crazy diet, I know. But unlike most people, I eat to live, not live to eat.:-)

I actually started this diet regimen seven years ago due to low to no kidney function. It has helped dramatically. In fact, I credit it with getting me off of dialysis, with no kidney transplant, that lasted three years. It also keeps me healthy, along with a good exercise regimen (like you all).

    Something don't add up!

If Israel shot down 99% that leaves 1% that got through.

    Follow me on this.

Nine made it through means 900 were launched.

    Somebody ain't telling the truth!

Maybe the same people who tell us Putin has cancer, Putin is running out of missiles, the Ruskies are being devastated by the US/NATO/the Ukies.

    I have a question.

We are in 70s. Did bio-energy testing in Dec. Started HIIT program based on test results and use heart rate as guide. My goal is 161 bpm for 2 min, my hubs is 144. 3 sets.

    Good for you all!!

I like your term "athletic active." That's me. At three months from hitting the big "eight zero" mark, I'm the same. I walk three to five miles every day, eat primarily a plant food diet, and have been on a 1000-calorie-a-day diet for almost seven years. Plus, I still work full-time at my own business. It keeps me going.

Does government promote or discourage the foundation of republics: two-parent families which form the next generation’s first impressions?

I'm pretty sure any idiot would know the answer to that question.

While our forefathers took great pains to listen to the likes of Montesquieu in forming our government with checks and balances, they overlooked two critical institutions -- public education and a so-called free press.

Both have lead the way to our demise.

    Too bad. So sad.

We all know Netanyahu. He will escalate, he will implement the Z strategy. He will be successful for a while until Israeli air defense is compromised. He will waste tens of billions of American tax dollars. Bibi will fail as he did 10/7 and in his ghastly actions in Gaza. Netanyahu will get many Israeli citizens killed in his coming retaliatory misadventures.

    You sure got that right!

We've seen it played out time and time again. Think back to the recent past in Ukieland. How many times were we told that the Ruskies were running out of missiles and they were being driven into the Black Sea?

All the time, the Ruskies are waging a war of attrition -- attrition in terms of Ukie manpower and equipment. And now that job is done, and they are annihilating the Ukies, and there is no more ammo or people left to fight. Not a bad strategy.

Haven't we seen the same used against us by our lamebrain leaders in places like Korea, Vietnam, and Afghanistan?

So, the Israelis seem to be heading down that same path.

Poof. They outrun their headlights, and it's over!

Sure, Ukraine could surrender, but the worst case scenario for NATO is Ukraine falling into Putin’s hands (as it will encourage him to continue throwing his weight around in the region). It’s also the worst case for Ukraine and the USA.

    Excuse me.

    You're a fool.

So in 2022 the Ukies could have settled it all.

And now, two years later, they've lost even more land, 500,000 of their young men, half the population of their country has fled the hell-hole, the power is being turned off all across their country, and we're sending billions making their payroll -- while we have invasions from across our own border, and people living in the streets not to mention cities across our country melting down with crime.

So you asked for it, and now you've got it -- the WORST CASE SCENARIO. And getting worse with each day.

And here you are, worried about the worst-case scenario for NATO. Oh boy.

I don't know how you run your little corner of the world, but I sure hope I never experience it.

Pray for Trump and hope he ends this nightmare!

Russia is not protecting its land.

Maybe in your little mind they're not protecting their land and people -- when the US/NATO have publically stated they want to dethrone Putin, like we did in Ukraine in 2014 and so many other countries around the world, and break up their country. And, by the way, don't forget the doubling of NATO when we told them at the end of the Cold War we would stop expanding NATO plus lies about the Minsk agreements

    Sure, no threat.

Russia is doing the same as we did in Cuba in the 60s. Russia is also doing the same we would do if they popped missiles on our border with Mexico and/or Canada.

    Get real.
