Kirsty Brown was snorkelling in waters close to the Rothera Research Station as part of her studies when the animal approached her and pulled her under. Colleagues who witnessed the attack immediately launched a rescue boat to try to save her. And although they managed to retrieve her body and begin resuscitation, the 28-year-old marine biologist could not be revived. Quick response The Cambridge-based British Antarctic Survey (Bas), which runs Rothera, said everyone connected with the organisation was shocked...

The thought police at California Polytechnic State University have found a white student guilty of "disruption" for trying to post a flier in a public area where black students were eating pizza. The flier advertised a talk by a black conservative. United Press International reported today: On the evening of Nov. 12, undergraduate Steve Hinkle, a member of the Cal Poly College Republicans, walked into the Multicultural Center on the San Luis Obispo campus to post a flier advertising a speech by Mason Weaver. In his book "It's OK to Leave the Plantation," Weaver argues that dependence on government puts...

The Willamette Weekly headline said, "He Says He Wants a Revolution," with a subhead, "A former ELF figure defends the historic role of violence in social change." Craig Rosebraugh, 30, a former vegan bakery operator, is also the former spokesman of the domestic terrorist network, Earth Liberation Front. The Portland, Oregon-based Rosebraugh told Willamette Weekly writer Amy Roe that violence may be necessary to achieve political change in America. "We must use a range of tactics, legal and illegal, violent and nonviolent," Roe quoted Rosebraugh as saying. Rosebraugh once answered a congressional inquiry about how he supported himself with the...

An article in Thursday's Chronicle, written by Jaxon van Debeken, tells of the arrest of an anti-war protester for planting a Molotov cocktail during an anti-war demonstration. The arrest was based on a surveillance tape. A San Francisco State student who faces a maximum of 10 years in prison on federal charges of possessing a Molotov cocktail was arrested after police recognized him as a protester they had booked just minutes after the device was planted. Jacob Lehman, 25, of San Francisco appeared in federal court Wednesday on charges of possessing an explosive device--a Molotov cocktail--found March 21 on Market...

Gordon Clark, the sole staff member and national coordinator of the Iraq Pledge of Resistance Network in Silver Spring, has run his organization during the past six months on $32,000 in grants from donors and institutions. "I think this war has a greater air of illegitimacy around it than other wars," he said, "so there have been greatly...

President Bollinger's Statement on Recent Comments by Assistant Professor De Genova I am shocked that someone would make such statements. Because of the University's tradition of academic freedom, I normally don't comment about statements made by faculty members. However, this one crosses the line and I really feel the need to say something. I am especially saddened for the families of those whose lives are at risk. Assistant Professor Nicholas De Genova was speaking as an individual at a teach-in. He was exercising his right to free speech. His statement does not in any way represent the views of Columbia...

Shame on You, Mr. Moore! Shame on You! The 'Bowling for Columbine' auteur had every qualification to make his antiwar speech at the Oscars. That didn't make it any less stupid By JAMES PONIEWOZIK It may not be the most popular thing to say today, but Michael Moore had not only every right but every legitimate qualification to make an antiwar speech — "Shame on you, Mr. Bush! Shame on you!" — at the 2003 Oscars. The standard reason to discount political speeches from Hollywood celebs, after all, is that we don't give a crap about their political thoughts: their...

SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco arson investigators removed 12 Molotov-type cocktails on Friday from a backpack discovered by a groundskeeper cleaning up debris left by anti-war protesters in a downtown alley way. The investigators carefully removed the homemade devices -- consisting of old liquor bottles filled with gasoline and having a wick -- and fingerprinted them. Police said the site where the devices were found was an area near 11th and Howard that had been traversed several times by a rather violent group demonstrators during Thursday's protests.
