Online retailers are coming under fire from Washington and state governments for not collecting sales tax from customers who purchase goods and services through websites such as Amazon and eBay. The tax itself is not new. The only difference is that online retailers could soon be required to collect it — just like their traditional bricks-and-mortar peers — instead of trusting customers to pay it on their own to the state, which is a requirement few heed.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A U.S. military investigation is recommending that as many as seven U.S. troops face administrative punishments, but not criminal charges, in the burning of Qurans at a U.S. base in Afghanistan in February, The Associated Press has learned. Detectives with the Narcotic Vice Squad in Nassau County were investigating Catherine Scalia, 45, of East Rockaway, and became aware she was offering up more than kraut and relish from her hot dog cart on Sunrise Highway in Baldwin, according to police. Scalia was arrested Thursday after authorities said she offered to engage in sexual conduct at her home with an undercover detective in return for money.
