"The first time I encountered The Story of Holly and Ivy was when my Great-Aunt gave me the book in the 1980s. Six-year-old-me was enamored with the story. My dad read it to me every Christmas. When I became a parent, I wanted to continue this tradition. However, reading this to my son and daughter was like reading science fiction to someone who only reads romance novels. My kids just weren’t interested. This is likely because the message of Holly and Ivy runs smack up against the safety guardrails that many children, including my own, have grown up with..."

Celebrities Urge GOP Electors To Deny Trump Electoral College Win m.huffpost.com High-profile actors and musicians are joining calls to deny Donald Trump the 270 electoral votes he needs to clinch the presidency, urging members of the Electoral College to choose someone more qualified in a video posted on YouTube Wednesday. “As you know, our Founding Fathers built the Electoral College to safeguard the American people from the dangers of a demagogue, and to ensure that the presidency only goes to someone who is ‘to an eminent degree, endowed with the requisite qualifications,’” “The West Wing” star Martin Sheen said. He...

The clock ticked a little impatiently, waiting for an answer. My answer. The interviewer’s question stuck in my mind, “Have you worked with diverse students before?” Looking past her wide set eyes, I focused on the picture of MLK behind her head. He stared down at me with knowing eyes. Brooding. Silent. Without reserve. I paused, finding the answer to her question. “Yes. I have worked with diverse students. I mean, I’ve been an English Language Development teacher for the past two years and all of my students have been Hispanic.” “I wouldn’t call that diverse.” She caught me with...

Just heard on the first half hour of his daily show that Dennis Miller is for the Tea Party. He laid out why he doesn't care a whit about the Republican party anymore, and that he likes the 'everyman' feel of the Tea Party. Before the break he said "I guess I'm for the Tea Party." The snowball continues to gain size, speed, and momentum. Me and Mrs. Colocdn are Conservative first, Republican only where they match conservative values.

I know this is vain, but I feel so good that I just got zotted by DailyKos. My half-life was exactly one post, one response.

BARRIE -- The mother of an autistic girl says the public school board was "completely unprofessional" to formulate a theory that her daughter was being sexually abused based on a psychic's perception. Barrie resident Colleen Leduc wants an apology from the Simcoe County District School Board, which called in the Children's Aid Society (CAS) to investigate. According to the board, the case is still under investigation, although Leduc says it was closed. Leduc immediately pulled her 11-year-old daughter, Victoria Nolet, out of Terry Fox Elementary School in north-end Barrie. "I have trust issues now," Leduc said. "What are they going...

Health clinics in six Denver high schools should be allowed to dispense birth control and emergency contraceptive pills, according to a new report by a health task force. "This is a real controversial issue," said Paul Melinkovich, who directs Denver Health's school-based clinics. "But teenagers are sexually active, and teen pregnancy is one of the largest reasons for the dropout of girls from high schools." ......

On this July 4, we would do well to renounce nationalism and all its symbols: its flags, its pledges of allegiance, its anthems, its insistence in song that God must single out America to be blessed. Is not nationalism -- that devotion to a flag, an anthem, a boundary so fierce it engenders mass murder -- one of the great evils of our time, along with racism, along with religious hatred? These ways of thinking -- cultivated, nurtured, indoctrinated from childhood on -- have been useful to those in power, and deadly for those out of power. National spirit can...

NEW YORK- A suspect in the mugging last month of a 101-year-old woman with a walker was arrested on Friday on drug charges, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said. Kelly said the 44-year-old man had been wanted for questioning in the vicious attack—captured on a surveillance tape—and another robbery of an 85-year-old woman. The videotape of the March 4 attack on 101-year-old Rose Morat shows her trying to leave her apartment building to go to church. The mugger, holding onto a bicycle, pretends to help her get through the vestibule. Then he turns to grab Morat's head, delivers three hard punches...

"Florida's continuing Terri Schiavo saga is of interest not only there, despite the uniquely American wrangle of states' rights versus federal involvement. The human aspect is compellingly universal and should trigger soul-searching in all modern societies where welcome medical advances have multiplied such dilemmas. We here have seen related legal disputes brought by terminally ill patients or their next-of-kin, often aimed at shortening an inevitable and irreversible process of death and sparing avoidable excruciating agony. ~snip~ It is indeed hard to imagine an Israeli court ruling like the one in Florida in a case such as Schiavo's. True, preserving life...

EDINBURGH The madman in Nietzsche's "Thus Spake Zarathustra," who lit a lantern in the bright morning hours and ran to the market to proclaim the death of God to the scoffing bystanders, realized he had come too early: "My time is not yet. This tremendous event is still on its way. ... It has not yet reached the ears of man." It has reached them now. Its time has come. God is dead. . That may sound like a quixotic claim in a time transfixed by religious controversy, with the devotees of rival gods at each other's throats, but it...

"The provincial surgery waiting list website is inaccurate and its numbers inflated because it includes patients who died before surgery and others who are counted more than once. The list is supposed to help patients estimate how long they must wait for surgical procedures, but the B.C. government now says the system, created in 1999, has never worked. The list currently shows a record 80,710 people waiting for operations..."
