In an extraordinary 11-page written statement (see official English text below), Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, 77, claims that Pope Francis knew about strict canonical sanctions imposed on McCarrick by Pope Benedict XVI but chose to repeal them. In his testimony, dated August 22, Archbishop Viganò, who served as apostolic nuncio in Washington D.C. from 2011-2016, states that in the late 2000s, Benedict had “imposed on Cardinal McCarrick sanctions similar to those now imposed on him by Pope Francis,” and that Viganò personally spoke with Francis about the gravity of McCarrick’s abuse soon after his election in 2013....

In the escalating battle between the administration and the judiciary, a federal appeals court apparently is calling the president's bluff -- ordering the Justice Department to answer by Thursday whether the Obama Administration believes that the courts have the right to strike down a federal law, according to a lawyer who was in the courtroom.

Simply said: when one truly digs in, MF Global exposes the 2011 equivalent of the 2008 AIG: virtually unlimited leverage via the shadow banking system, in which there are practically no hard assets backing the infinite layers of debt created above, and which when finally unwound, will create a cataclysmic collapse of all financial institutions, where every bank is daisy-chained to each other courtesy of multiple layers of "hypothecation, and re-hypothecation."

On July 6th, just two days ago, at least a dozen busybody Congressmen sponsored the introduction of HR 2411, the “Reduce America’s Debt Now Act of 2011.” They always come up with fantastic names for these pieces of legislation… and rest assured, the better/more patriotic the name, the more ominous the bill. This one follows the pattern. HR 2411 states that every worker in America should be able to voluntarily have a portion of his/her wages automatically withheld and sent directly to the Treasury Department for the purposes of paying down the federal debt. “Every employer making payment of wages...

There are intriguing reports in New York that the man who was once dubbed Eliot Ness – after the “untouchable” FBI crime-buster – may have owed his fall at least in part to the bankers he once pursued with ruthless moral zeal. Was the governor a victim of Wall Street’s revenge? “Only one thing is certain – it’s an Eliot mess,” declared one former prosecutor.

My godson tells me via AIM that he's slated to get a two week R&R from Iraq around Nov. 17. The army will get him as far as Baltimore, but he's on his own from there (he's headed to Texas). He's concerned that if he purchases a flight ahead of time, then the Army goofs up his arrival in Baltimore, he'll be faced with a hefty penalty for changing flight times (supposing there would be flights available anyway). This can't be a new problem. Before I start calling every airline serving Baltimore, I thought I'd ask here, just in case...

This is a web site put up by a bona fide Frenchman in opposition to the surrender-monkey attitudes currently reigning in France. Click here to get to his home page. Amazing stuff. Considering the source, it's incredible.

When President Bush spoke to the nation five hours after the space shuttle Columbia went silent on Saturday, he invoked the prophet Isaiah and the Creator, saying he prayed heaven's reward for America's latter-day pioneers. Aides said the frankly religious nature of Bush's four-minute remarks was aimed largely at comforting the bereaved, and at trying to give the nation a larger context for a sudden and macabre tragedy. [see link above for complete story]

This is not a eulogy; it is a political obituary. The Texas Democratic Party is officially dead. The pronouncement came on Nov. 5, 2002, when Democrats were handed yet another fatal blow across the state. After the initial "heart attack" in 1994, each successive statewide election has been a clean sweep for Republicans, from governor to U.S. senator to any judgeship on the ballot. At the moment, no Democrat could be elected dogcatcher. It does not seem to matter who the Democrats nominate, or the Republicans for that matter. Merely having an "R" by one's name guarantees victory in Texas — even for...

<p>"Thirty years ago, the ferment for ordination of women was on everyone's radar as far as 'gender issues in the church' were concerned. At the time, that issue was cast in terms of validating the ministry of women in the Church.</p>

The Orange County, Calif., chapter of the American Red Cross has canceled the planned performance of a music group at an upcoming event honoring the organization's volunteers who helped at the World Trade Center after the Sept. 11 attacks because the group planned to sing songs that mention quot;prayerquot; and quot;God.quot; quot;Somebody has gone a little overboardquot; at the Red Cross, said Cherilyn Bacon, director of First Act, a choral group made up of middle school-aged students from a local performing arts school. The group was invited to perform quot;Heroes' Trilogyquot; and to dedicate it to the 9-11 volunteers at...

(An excerpt from the beginning of the article ... ) On the surface, it looks like just an elegant evening. About 70 fathers don formal attire, twirl their daughters to the rhythms of the waltz and other ballroom dances, and eat at the upscale Broadmoor hotel. The sold-out event is Saturday. But the real purpose of the evening will be the pledge each father will read and sign at the event. The purity covenant, as written by the Wilsons, expects fathers to model integrity as a positive influence for their daughters. The pledge, in fact, expects fathers to "be pure ...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrat Al Gore (news - web sites) again tried to shore up his base while Republican George W. Bush (news - web sites) prepared a new assault on California, aiming to land a knockout blow in the U.S. presidential slugfest. With polls showing the Texas governor possibly with a slim lead and with only 11 days left until Election Day, Gore began the day in West Virginia, a traditionally Democratic state where Bush is leading this year. The latest Reuters/MSNBC tracking poll gave Bush a slim one-point lead Friday. Other polls, with the exception of the volatile ...

For those who don't have time to watch the presidential debates, here's a Reader's Digest transcript of what was said: Jim Lehrer: Welcome to the presidential debate between Vice President Al Gore and Gov. George W. Bush. The candidates have agreed on these rules: I will ask a question. The candidate will ignore the question and deliver rehearsed remarks designed to appeal to undecided women voters. The opponent will then have one minute to respond by trying to frighten senior citizens into voting for him. When a speaker's time has expired, I will whimper softly while he continues to spew ...

In flare-ups forcing colleges to choose between religious freedom and gay rights, Tufts University and Middlebury College are embroiled in debates over whether to punish evangelical Christian student groups that refuse to allow gay students to hold leadership posts. An arm of the Tufts student government already has sharply limited the rights of the Tufts Christian Fellowship, banning the group from using the school's name, meeting in its classrooms, spending its student activity fees, or promoting its events through the university's listing services. In Vermont, students, faculty, and administrators are debating whether to require the Middlebury Christian Fellowship to allow ...

John McCain's rebuke Monday of Christian conservatives — whom he compared to Louis Farrakhan and Al Sharpton — is already hurting him in the key primary state of New York. John Zogby, a Utica, N.Y.-based pollster without ties to any presidential candidate, said Mr. McCain's 16-point lead over Mr. Bush among Roman Catholic voters as recently as last Saturday has been eliminated. Roman Catholics make up about 45 percent of the state's GOP primary electorate. "We actually have Bush pulling ahead among Catholics by a few points — enough to make it a trend — still a statistical dead heat ...
