  • For all You universal Harvard-Bashers

Captain Hagan Scotten Much has changed for Hagan Scotten ’10 as he leaves Harvard Law School—just as when he left the U.S. Army in Iraq to come to HLS three years ago. But his habit of leaving highly decorated is intact. A winner of two Bronze Stars as a troop commander in the Fifth Special Forces Group, Scotten was awarded the prestigious Fay Diploma at this year’s Commencement, reserved for the J.D. graduate with the highest grades of his or her class. Similarly, last year he was awarded the Sears Prize, given to the three students with the highest grades...

For all you Tiger-haters out there -- he and Stricker go from one down to win by one -- 20-foot+ putt on 17, laser 4-iron from 230 yards to 7 feet or so on 18. Opponents concede. US up by 3 (10-7) rather than by only one. Seriously -- lots of other good play by US, but Tiger comes through in the clutch for the US.

Note on media coverage — the dinosaur media are doing their best to make it disappear. My NYT today not only is not on front page, nor news index page, I finally found a small story at the bottom of page 12, below coverage of Mexican Easter traditions! (emphasizing role of somali elders!) How about other media? — I haven’t been monitoring.
  • Harvard Goes to War

Harvard Goes to War On Tuesday night, David Gergen moderated a forum at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government that featured five Harvard veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The event was billed as a special tribute to the roughly 100 veterans of those wars who are currently enrolled at the Kennedy School and Harvard Business School, and the audience was overwhelmingly supportive of the troops, if not their mission--at least there was no visible evidence of antiwar sentiment. The evening began with a moment of silence for those who had given their lives in the service...
  • Anti-Panic on New registrations (Michigan Example)

A litle analysis that may allay some of the panic over "floods of new registrations." Michigan just posted the final county registration figures. It could be read as "OMIGOD! 250,000 new registrations! Over 75,000 in Wayne and Washtenaw Counties (Detroit and Ann Arbor)! We're doomed." BUT The site above can give you the actual numbers for every county, and for election 2000 as well. Here's what you find. Since July of this year, statewide registration is up 3.6%; Wayne is up 4.2%; Outstate (outside top 15 counties) is up 2.9%. SLight, but not massive, edge to Dem areas. BUT If...

Here's the "money quote" "I wanted to come here because I was raised in the military, with my father being in the Army, and I understand the sacrifices he made for our country," Woods told the troops. "And I understand all the sacrifices you are making for our country, and I wanted to honor that. I want to do whatever I can to make you guys realize how thankful we are for all the jobs you guys are doing for us." --------------------------------- And the full article. • National Identity Card v. Crackdown on Illegal Aliens (Serious Vanity)

    Dilemma | May 30, 2003 | BohDaThone
Many (probably most) people on this site oppose any type of National identity card. Many (probably most) people on this site support vigorous efforts to identify, detain and deport illegal aliens in the United States. How can these be reconciled efficiently? This is a serious request for insight. Obviously, there are ways to do a better job than we do now of apprehending illegal aliens, but as a general rule, there is no way to identify someone as such, exactly because there is no uniform way to identify oneself as a citizen or legal alien, and no requirement to be...
  • FR POSTS v. AOL BOARDS

Just a note to praise FR posts, even those that (to me) seem the looniest. I just spent some time on AOL, looking at their posts on the 990 crash. On average, they make even the most tinfoil-hat-wearing Freeper look like a genius.
