Suddenly those AI systems that answer the phone and drive you crazy because you know they won’t direct you to the correct place make the sound of typing after each answer, like the AI is actually Googling the question or something.

I have to wonder whose bright idea that was, and why it’s catching on. Does anyone actually think there’s a person there typing?

Yeah, and we were talking about the old empires like CompUSA, Radio Shack, etc.

I wound up at Compaq after a try with a startup computer magazine called Personal Workstation (originally MIPS).

When I went to interview at Compaq they handed me a folder of information about the company. One of the items in the folder was a reprint of an article I had written.

I found out later that my time at the magazine made me pretty-much a shoe-in.

No problem. It’s a familiar sad story.

I went to Compaq when it was still under Rod Canion. They hired a consulting company which lead to the first ever layoff and replacing Rod with Ekhard Pfeiffer, who was a great salesman. Somehow he managed to acquire Digital Equipment and not do very much with that IP and finally get Compaq sold to HP. In the meantime I saw lots of management decisions that didn’t make sense to me. I bailed before HP bought the company.

Just because the management decisions didn’t make sense to me doesn’t mean I could have done better. But I’m often amazed at how little common sense seems to drive corporate decisions.

If I can get everything to a transfer station tomorrow then we *should* be done with all the junk and ready to talk to realtors. They had a battery operated rip saw that’s not spoken for yet and we will try to give away. But I plugged the battery in last night because I probably have some boards too long for the transfer station. Mrs. ArGee is afraid for my fingers.

Yesterday was a quiet-ish day on the estate side, which is good news (I hope). I have to try to figure out some Met-Life deposit that’s still going into M-I-L’s old checking account.

I also need to get Mrs. ArGee on the stick about calling Social Security. She doesn’t have enough points for her own account so she has to get on my Medicare account before it kicks in (yes, about to turn 65). Naturally, she doesn’t want to add that to her list. But I want to pick out our Part C and I want her included when I do it. If it’s going to still be there, I’m going to take advantage of it.

I was down to one guess at Wordle and 2 options for the guess. ‘Phew’ is right!

Wordle is fun for learning words.

For examle, I didn’t know AUTIC was acutally a word until I guessed it the other day. It then made the actual (and much more normal word that I wasn’t thinking of) obvious.

It would probably have been faster if we'd just ordered a roll-off, but Mrs. ArGee didn't want to spend the Estate money and didn't want the look of "nobody lives here" at the house.

I think we'll be there on Saturday after I make 3-4 runs to transfer stations. Mrs. ArGee has actually made a couple of runs to the local one today.

Interesting.

I don’t suppose you make sure liberals are around when doing that?

B-I-L is safely back home. He managed to get some local storage so he can pick up his stuff on his schedule. His daughter is getting married soon so he probably can’t come back here until September. Anyway, yesterday we got the rest of his stuff into his storage container. Back to junk removal.

I did a little better at Wordle today. Yesterday I was on my third guess thinking I had the last letter when I realized it was not the last letter. It messed up guess 2. I guess it’s really not good to mess with my morning routine.

Sorry for being tardy. I went to the transfer station the next town up to get rid of some things our local transfer station wouldn’t take. I didn’t check that they were open today and they weren’t. Fortunately the town has 2 and the other one was open. So I got back to owrk about 9 and jumped right in.

I’m taking B-I-L to the airport today. Mrs. ArGee got the approval of everyone’s wish lists so people can start removing things people wanted from the house. We hope to talk with realtors next week.

Wordle was a bit of a struggle today.
