Elementary school evacuated after student brought “historic unexploded ordinance” for show and tell

No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.

One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.

The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:

Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.

Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.

Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,

It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.

But, she added:

Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.

Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.

The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.

‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'

Not an easy task by any means.

The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"

This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.

It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.

It began that way. Devolved through sly commentary about the prospective aftermath of bean-based culinary marvels, and was co-opted by FRs Undead Crew less than 50 posts in.

We drop in to admire the cats, and talk about not news with others eager to talk about not news.

And play Wordle

Because the puzzles max out at six attempts, we’ve used Wordle scores to “play golf” setting par for each hole according to that of a real world course. We’ve “played” a half dozen of the nicest links in the world.

All in the name of keeping up acquaintances and general sociability.

I had to make a comment and laugh at how long threads such as this survive and how they evolve from topic to another, totally different from what the original topic was.

...the sum of the frequencies of first- and second-guess solutions still might not match up, but could be tolerably close...? Maybe?

Might be pretty close... for your average batter that is not a home run hitter... against pretty good pitching...

Maybe 6 rows and beyond is a strike out?

The Undead Thread has been going for an embarrassingly long time, more than 20 years.

Good morning. Happy Friday Eve!

Trick question. That’s not pie, right?. 😉

It’s raining pretty steadily this morning. The basement is dry, though, which is good for the work the guy did yesterday.

Mrs. ArGee now wants a hedge to put between us and our neighbor to the north. She really doesn’t like them. So, to find the right shrubbery. Someone said Green Giants so we’ll look into those.

I haven’t solved the Wordle yet and I’m not coming up with any ideas, so I’ll let it sit a bit. I’ll post it when I get it.

Junipers make a pretty good barricade. That’s what the Carters on our east side have between our upstairs windows and their pool. Not that they use their pool much. They’re good for birds too.

Might rain here later. I’m waiting for Sally to text me about whether she wants me to babysit today.

Holly

My neighbor planted holly . 40 + years later , nothing short of a large excavator and possibly dynamite would budge those things. Birds like it.

We have holly at the two front corners of our house, thanks to the builders. It is nice for the birds, but we have to keep cutting it so it doesn’t tear the gutters and siding apart.

Are either Juniper or Holly relatively fast growing? We don’t know how long we’ll be here, and Mrs. ArGee knows she doesn’t want to look at the neighbors’ back yard.

We also think it could possibly cut down the amount of time their dogs spend barking at us.

Good Morning!

I do know where the pie is...

We actually added another 0.34” in the morning bringing us to 0.78” for the event... beggars can’t be choosers... we are glad that we got what we did! Now to wait for the next opportunity....

Looks like I eked out a single...

Wordle 1,727 5/6*

I guess it is relatively fast growing... I cut one Holly bush down to the ground a few years ago (Mrs. zz said it was blocking her view from a particular window) and left the stump... it is back up to about 6’ now... very hardy... drought resistant...

The stuff is tough as nails, sucker roots everywhere , pokey leaves . Makes for a heck of a hedge though.

If I had a Time Machine , I’d leave the holly and cut down some pines that are in a different yard , they block early morning sun in my yard.

I think the baseball thing could work... not a head to head matchup so any number of players is fine...

Row 1 - Home Run
Row 2 - Triple
Row 3 - Double
Row 4 - Single or Out (varies by occurrence * )
Row 5 - Out
Row 6 - Out
beyond - Inning over...

* For example, if I got a row 4 solution today, it is a Single, the next time I get a row 4 solution, it is an out... and so forth...

We each keep track of our runs scored and outs per inning... Highest run total after 9 innings is the winner... (Or we could have 5 or 7 inning games for brevity...)

Or, we could pick another course and play a round of championship golf! ⛳️

Maybe we should play Wordle Cricket. We could just make stuff up since nobody understands Cricket anyway.

Or go full Wordle Calvinball.
