"Don't Fire Til You See the Whites Of Their Eyes" was the advice of General Israel Putnam to the men defending Bunker Hill. Today, as Mitt Romney was in New Hampshire declaring his bid for President, Sarah Palin summoned Putnam and placed Mitt Romney's white eyes in her crosshairs. She sounds increasingly like a candidate for that same high office. Palin took a shot at Romneycare while at Bunker Hill. “In my opinion any mandate coming from government is not a good thing.” She continued.“Even on a state level and even a local level, mandates coming from a governing body,...

On the evening of June 16, 1775, Colonel William Prescott took 1,200 Massachusetts and Connecticut soldiers to fortify Bunker Hill. General Thomas Gage had ordered that the position be captured. Mistakenly, Prescott passed the position, digging in at a lower position known as Breed’s Hill. What would ensue was a furious battle that would embolden the American people. The British, though victorious, were taught a painful lesson. The British casualties that were injured or killed totaled 1,054. It was a demoralizing victory, and as General Henry Clinton noted, “It was a dear bought victory, another such would have ruined us.”...

In Boston, history is always just below the surface. And in Charlestown, underneath a row of genteel gardens, in the middle of a teeming city, is believed to be a mass grave containing the bones of possibly dozens of British soldiers killed in one of the most important battles in American history. The site, part of the sprawling Bunker Hill battlefield, has been pinpointed by a curator from Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia and a Charlestown historian who are confident they know where the bodies were buried - 15 feet underground in what had been a rebel-dug ditch that featured some...

Battle of Breed's Hill / Bunker Hill A Brief History After retreating from Lexington in April, 1775, the British Army occupied Boston for several months. Realizing the need to strengthen their position in the face of increasing anti-British sentiment in and around Boston, plans were developed to seize and fortify nearby Dorchester Heights and Charlestown peninsulas. The peninsulas offered a commanding view of the seaport and harbor, and were important to preserving the security of Boston. The Americans caught word of the British plan, and decided to get to the Charlestown peninsula first, fortify it, and present sufficient threat to...

Overview: On June 17, 1775 the Battle of Bunker Hill took place. It is one of the most important colonial victories in the U.S. War for Independence. Fought during the Siege of Boston, it lent considerable encouragement to the revolutionary cause. This battle made both sides realize that this was not going to be a matter decided on by one quick and decisive battle. When the British planned to occupy Dorchester Heights on the Boston Peninsula, the colonists became alarmed at the build up of British troops off of the coast. The colonists decided that action had to be taken...

"The story of Bunker Hill battle," Allen French wrote, "is a tale of great blunders heroically redeemed." The first blunder was the decision of the Massachusetts Committee of Safety to fortify Charlestown heights and attempt to hold it against the British, cooped up in Boston after their withdrawal from Lexington and Concord. The ultimate aim was, in the abstract at least, sensible enough: to tighten the encirclement of Boston by commanding the heights both north and south of the town—Dorchester as well as Charlestown—and to deny those commanding hills to the British. But in fact the Americans did not have...
