Nebraska Defeats Radical Measure Creating Right to Kill Babies in Abortions

Nebraska voters voted pro-life on two key measures in last nights presidential election.

Nebraska voters rejected an extreme abortion ballot proposal, Initiative 439, and simultaneously passed pro-life Initiative 434.

First, Nebraska voters rejected the “Protect the Right to Abortion” amendment, which would enshrine abortion as a right in the state constitution – defeating it on a 51.2-48.8 margin. Secondly, they voted for a pro-life measure that would ban late-term abortions, adopting it on a 55.3-44.7 margin.

Nebraska Right to Life and other pro-life advocates joins other members of the Protect Women and Children coalition in celebrating passage of the ballot measure #434, which amends the Nebraska Constitution protecting babies in the womb after the first trimester except in cases of rape, incest or medical emergency.

“We are so grateful for all of the people who worked tirelessly at the grassroots level to help educate the public on this issue so they could make an informed decision at the polls,” said Sandy Danek, executive director of Nebraska Right to Life. “Nebraskans have spoken; they have voted in favor of the dignity of both mothers and the children in their wombs.”

Measure #434 was introduced in response to the competing ballot measure #439 championed by the abortion industry.

“The language of 439 was so deceptively vague that it would have allowed abortions to be performed up until birth,” Danek told LifeNews. “It also would have negated many of the laws Nebraskans have put in place over the past decades that provide safeguards and standards of care for both women and children,” she added.

“With their vote, Nebraskans showed they reject the extremism represented in measure 439,” Danek said. “As we go forward, Nebraska Right to Life will continue to provide education and resources to help change hearts and minds to a culture of life.”

The Catholic bishops of Nebraska also celebrated the win.

Archbishop George J. Lucas of the Archdiocese of Omaha, Bishop James D. Conley of the Diocese of Lincoln, and Bishop Joseph G. Hanefeldt of the Diocese of Grand Island issued the following joint statement to LifeNews:

“Praise be to God for an inspiring victory for Nebraska women and children! We are overjoyed at the defeat of Initiative 439 and the success of Initiative 434.

“Nebraskans have sent a clear message to the rest of our nation: Nebraska is a pro-life state that will stand up for its most vulnerable citizens.

“We are grateful for the thousands of Nebraskans who worked tirelessly to ensure that their neighbors understood Initiative 439’s flaws. Their dedication and hard work are reflected in this victory, and we rejoice with them.

“As we celebrate this important victory for life and the dignity of the human person, we reaffirm our longstanding commitment to every mother, father, child, and family in our state, to work for their support, and to be, in the words of Pope Francis, ‘islands of mercy in a sea of indifference.’ We call on every Nebraskan to join us in this mission of mercy, love, and unyielding resolve.”

“We celebrate the lives that will be saved with the triumph of Initiative 434 over the ACLU’s attempt to enshrine all-trimester abortion in the constitution,” said SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “Thanks to leadership from Sen. Pete Ricketts, Gov. Jim Pillen and GOP leaders, abortion industry lies were challenged and the radical implications of Initiative 439 were exposed while a reasonable alternative was advanced.

“Nebraskans have spoken to reinforce the compassionate policy of protecting babies after the first trimester and reject the ACLU’s amendment for late-term abortions. Planned Parenthood’s ploy to force taxpayers to fund abortions, end all health regulations on their industry and stop parents from having a say in their daughters’ lives has failed.

“Nebraska’s victory shows that when the GOP invests time and money to fight ballot measures, life wins on the ballot. If Republicans in states with future ballot fights model Pete Ricketts’ courage and involvement, we will secure more victories for women and babies in the womb.”

This was way too close. The damage from Roe is going to take a long time to repair, if ever. Perhaps even several generations.
