When United booted a paying customer from first class to make room for a member of Congress, the Internet erupted with good and healthy egalitarian outrage. But don’t blame the airline. The congresswoman in question was Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas. And until she lands on the no-fly list, no airline is safe. Jackson Lee has been terrorizing the skies since coming to Congress in 1995. The Democrat has developed a reputation for making life hell for any clerk, stewardess, or pilot unwilling or unable to make her three-and-a-half-hour flight anything less than glamorous. She takes advantage of federal travel...

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) on Thursday clarified that his walking boot is on his right foot, adding that he switched it to his left to "give it a break." McCain caused confusion when he posted a photo from his daughter Meghan's wedding in which his walking boot was on his left foot. He had previously been seen wearing it on his right foot after he suffered a minor tear in his right Achilles tendon.

Get ready for a new tactic politicians may use when trying to deflect attention drawn from an inconvenient investigation: sympathy via very bad health news. As the whole Fusion GPS-Russian dossier scandal began to unravel away from President Trump and towards those who maliciously distributed it and the FBI's involvement, a new development occurred. As his doctors can't be compelled to verify, we can only go by McCain's word and what we see....

I am white. I am Jewish. I am an immigrant. I am a Russian American. But until recently I haven’t focused so much on those parts of my identity. I’ve always thought of myself simply as a normal, unhyphenated American. Ever since I arrived here, along with my mother and grandmother, from Russia in 1976 at age 7, I have been eager to assimilate. And I’ve done a pretty good job of it. I don’t have any accent, and I haven’t written much about my origins — which, at any rate, don’t have much to do with my job, which...

“If there is no God, everything is permitted”, wrote Dostoyevsky. Yet he underestimated the despotic potential of godless modernity. It imposes its own taboos, and they may well be more numerous than those imposed by Christendom. They certainly are different because their purpose is. Judaeo-Christianity saw man as sinful but capable of becoming better. Both its prescriptions and proscriptions were issued to signpost the road to self-improvement in this world and salvation in the next. The original commandments were chiselled in stone literally, the later ones figuratively, but there was no room left for misinterpretation in either case. Modernity sees...

Monopoly is making changes: The boot has been booted, the wheelbarrow has been wheeled out, and the thimble got the thumbs down in the latest version of the board game. In their place this fall will be a Tyrannosaurus rex, a penguin and a rubber ducky. …

Full title: 'There are SWASTIKAS on the bottom!' Boot brand is forced to recall footwear after customers complain the soles are covered with inappropriate symbols A shoe manufacturer has said it will recall one of its boots after customers complained that the sole was decorated with swastikas. The issue emerged after a customer told of his shock after receiving his new boots and shared an image of the underside of his boot - which appeared to feature swastikas - online. Makers of the Polar Fox boot, which is still on sale on Amazon for $38.99, claim they were unaware of...

One has to admit that Donald isn’t everybody’s idea of a pious Presbyterian. Though he still maintains some loose connection with his parents’ confession, his behaviour is, how shall I put it, more Playboy than Presbyterian. And yet he won over Christians by a wide margin: 52 per cent of all Catholics, 58 per cent of all Protestants and 82 per cent of all evangelicals voted for him. The Catholic vote is particularly notable. After all, some 40 per cent of US Catholics are Hispanics, and, putting it mildly, Trump didn’t go out of his way to endear himself to...

"DISK BOOT FAILURE - Insert system disk and press enter" Doing just that produces no result. I've tried booting with the system disk I used to install W7 on this machine, and with two repair disks created on other 32 bit W7 machines, and get the "This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible" message with them all. I have a Windows PE install on a flash drive which will boot and let me in to look at the drives. I've been able to copy all the files from the boot partition to another USB drive, and run chkdsk...

That's the heading on the first page of the court order obtained theGuardian. Top Secret is one of the highest levels of security classification in the U.S. government; the other initials indicate that this is "special intelligence," aka "signals intelligence," one of the most closely guarded capabilities of the U.S. intelligence community, and that it should not shown to any foreigners. Ironically and disturbingly, a British newspaper obtained this document. ... I have no idea who this intelligence officer is, but he (or she) has committed a serious crime by the unauthorized disclosure of such sensitive information. He needs to...

Barack Obama was a founding member of the board of Public Allies in 1992, resigning before his wife became executive director of the Chicago chapter of Public Allies in 1993. Obama plans to use the nonprofit group, which he features on his campaign Web site, as the model for a national service corps. He calls his Orwellian program, "Universal Voluntary Public Service." But its real mission is to radicalize American youth and use them to bring about "social change" through threats, pressure, tension and confrontation — the tactics used by the father of community organizing, Saul "The Red" Alinsky. "Our...

ACLU Sues Laguna Beach for Giving Homeless the BootPosted by Daffodil J. Altan December 23, 2008 11:40 AM The ACLU filed a federal civil rights lawsuit today against the city of Laguna Beach for its "unlawful and inhumane policy of harassing and intimidating disabled homeless people." The suit alleges that the city's prolonged arrests of its small, disabled homeless population under the guise of an anti-sleeping ordinance is "blatantly unconstitutional" and criminalizes an otherwise helpless disabled population. Erwin Chemerinsky, chair of UC Irvine's law school, is acting as co-counsel. According to the ACLU, the city has had plenty of time...

Italy expelled a Turin imam to his native Morocco Wednesday after his sermons were secretly filmed and his views were deemed a threat to public security, officials said. Mohamed Kohaila, who had been living in Italy for years, was deported in the evening, according to the Interior Ministry. The ministry said local and national anti-terrorism authorities determined that Kohaila was inciting "violently anti-Western behavior" and maintained relations with extremists close to militant jihadists. Kohaila was a close aide to another Moroccan-born imam in Turin, Bourki Bouchta, who was deemed an extremist and expelled from Italy in 2005, police in the...

5/23/2007 - LACKLAND AIR FORCE BASE, Texas (AFPN) -- He sizes up his troops with an icy glare. As he scrutinizes his trainees' every move, he wonders to himself, "Which one will be a problem? Who will be crazy, lazy, or skittish? Who's going to be clumsy or a slow learner? Who will separate himself as the best of the best?" He barks out his commands, and they do their best to try to please him. Still, the instructor knows he has his work cut out for him. This group is really doggin' it. But that's not necessarily a bad...

IN a small box titled "Names of the Dead" on page 10, The New York Times recorded the passing of Captain Mark Paine this week, who died after a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in Iraq. His local California newspaper, the Contra Costa Times, ran more than 700 words on Cpt Paine's death, including interviews with his mother, father and even his old Scoutmaster, while the San Francisco Chronicle ran a 500-word obituary. This local coverage of US military deaths "actually has a bigger affect on public opinion than the overall trends," said Matt Baum, an associate professor of...
