<p>MIAMI — With the 2004 presidential election just a year away, cutting edge voting machines once touted as foolproof are coming under fire.</p> <p>"There's no paper trail," said Rep. Robert Wexler, D-Fla., "And there's no assurance that what you put into the machines actually happens."</p>

<p>MIAMI (AP) -- The federal government agreed Friday to provide monitors to watch for civil rights violations at the polls in several Florida counties during the Nov. 5 election.</p> <p>Florida Secretary of State Jim Smith had asked for help from the Justice Department to prevent a repeat of the Sept. 10 primary, when some vote tallies were delayed for days and some polling places did not open on time.</p>
