What's the Worst Prediction About the Blue-Red Divide by a Journalist? A close contest, but I'd give the award to The Washington Post's Thomas Byrne Edsall, who wrote a January 2003 essay in the Atlantic Monthly presciently subtitled, "The 'morality gap' is becoming the key variable in American politics." "Whereas elections once pitted the party of the working class against the party of Wall Street," wrote Edsall, "they now pit voters who believe in a fixed and universal morality against those who see moral issues, especially sexual ones, as elastic and subject to personal choice." What with 22 percent of...

t is a bit of irony that Ernie Garven, who died last week at his Florida home, wrote the unforgettable Hamm's beer advertising jingle, "From the land of sky blue wa-a-aters.

Blue blue town Published: Nov 12, 2004 Election"s aftermath leaves Democrats down in the dumps and looking for ways to cope with four more years of W. By ANNE BLYTHE AND MATT DEES, STAFF WRITERS TVs have been off. Some of the political commentary is too much to take. Radios are tuned to music, not talk. Newspapers with front-page pictures of President Bush either go straight into recycling bins or get flipped over quickly to hide what die-hard Democrats and Anybody-But-Bush fans commonly refer to as “that smug mug.” Sure, 11 days have passed since 59 million Americans cast ballots...

There's so much being said about Red vs. Blue states, it's beginning to sound as though the entire population of the red states voted for President Bush and the entire population of the blue states voted for Kerry. It’s as though the red states are comprised entirely of neanderthal, bible-thumping rednecks, and the blue states are comprised entirely of the intellectual, all-knowing, global-aware elites. Well, I did a summary of the Blue states and it turns out that 24,839,492 bible-thumping neanderthals from those states voted for George W. Bush. In looking at the Blue states, they comprise most of the...

"I'm not sure where we went wrong," says Ellen McCormack, nervously fondling the recycled paper cup holding her organic Kona soy latte. "It seems like only yesterday Rain was a carefree little boy at the Montessori school, playing non-competitive musical chairs with the other children and his care facilitators." "But now..." she pauses, staring out the window of her postmodern Palo Alto home. The words are hesitant, measured, bearing a tale of family heartbreak almost too painful for her to recount. "But now, Rain insists that I call him Bobby Ray." Even as her voice is choked with emotion, she...

Left-Wing Buchananites ... Lawrence O'Donnell and Eleanor Clift, reacting to President Bush's stunning re-election victory by out-Buchananing Buchanan: O'Donnell: The big problem the country now has, which is going to produce a serious discussion of secession over the next 20 years, is that the segment of the country that pays for the federal government is now being governed by the people who don't pay for the federal government. . . . Ninety percent of the red states are welfare client states of the federal government. They collect more from the federal government than they send in. New York and California,...

Thank you, my Southern brothers and sisters. Thank you for delivering us from evil. Time and again, I have enjoyed the warm, pleasant and invigorating breeze of your sweet judgement; your common sense; your patriotism. When I become infuriated by the MSM, I calm myself with the thought; "At least I know my Southern friends are not buying this load of..." When I witness acres and acres desks in the downtown Chicago Social Security Administration filled with sleeping patronage-hires, I comfort myself knowing that not all places are so corrupt. When I hear of American soldiers fighting and dying; I...

I’m not surprised that a Party, who thinks George Soros represents American values, still can’t figure out what happened on November 2nd. No wonder Bill Clinton is still the star of the Democratic Party, he’s the only one who is even close to getting it… Three days after the outcome of the 2004 election became clear, former President Clinton had a message for Democrats on the brink of suicide: “Buck up. It's not that bad. You need to improve your image.” "This election presents a great opportunity for President Bush and a great opportunity for Democrats, and the two are...

First order of business: Thank you Florida! People there are still cleaning up after the hurricanes and some still do not have proper residences. Yet they took the time to stand in line to vote. We should all take the time to send a note of thanks to a friend in Florida. Y'all see all the red on that USA Today map? Check out the difference between the 2000 map and this year's.[1] Dubya is the first President to be re-elected and gain seats in both the House and Senate since 1936. The last President to receive an outright majority...

I say forget introspection. It's time to be honest about our antagonists. My predecessors in this conversation are thoughtful men, and I honor their ideas, but let's try something else. I grew up in Missouri and most of my family voted for Bush, so I am going to be the one to say it: The election results reflect the decision of the right wing to cultivate and exploit ignorance in the citizenry. I suppose the good news is that 55 million Americans have evaded the ignorance-inducing machine. But 58 million have not. (Well, almost 58 million—my relatives are not ignorant,...

Well, I did a summary of the Blue states and it turns out that 24,839,492 bible-thumping neanderthals from those states voted for George W. Bush. In looking at the Blue states, they comprise the largest cities in the country - Detroit, New York, Baltimore, etc., i.e., the government handout crowd coupled with their liberal sympathizers. In D.C., George got less than...

Friday, Nov. 5, 2004 I hate it when they do that - write a column that not only says what I planned to write but also has almost the same title I had in mind. But when the writer is Ron Marr, one of the best down-to-earth columnists on the Internet, I simply doff my hat. Ron sets off his column with a quote from what he called a "well-coifed anchor" whose voice dripped "with derision and condescension" when he told his viewers: "What we don't realize is that there's a huge segment of the country that doesn't think like...

Previously asked for data on this, but decided to do the numbers myself (i.e. as Rush would say.. "Rugged Individualism" won out over looking for a handout...) The numbers flat out tell the story. In 1 state, the People's Republic of Vermont, President Bush earned a lesser % of the vote in 2004 than in 2000. In 2 states (Montana and South Dakota) Bush had essentially the same % of the vote (i.e. difference of less than .5%). In the remaining 47 states (yes, including the lib enclaves of CA-NY-IL-DC), Bush earned a higher % of the vote this year...
