President Donald Trump broke his silence on the increasing trend of states passing restrictive abortion bans late Saturday, denouncing bills like the one that passed last week in Alabama. Trump said he is "strongly Pro-Life," but said he does favor allowing women to get abortions in the case of rape, incest or the health of the mother. The bill passed by the Alabama legislature and signed by Gov. Kay Ivey on Wednesday contains no exemption for rape or incest, though it does allow abortions if the mother's life is threatened.

China has recalled two cute giant pandas from a popular zoo in the US amid the countries' ongoing trade war. Bai Yun, 26, and her six-year-old cub Xiao Liwu are iconic images of San Diego Zoo in California. Bai Yun has spent more than 20 years at the attraction after arriving as a tiny cub. She has aided important worldwide research in the protection, breeding, disease control of giant pandas. The Pew Research Center has produced a projected profile of what the American electorate will look like ethnically in the 2020 elections. The portrait shows a continued trend of America becoming an increasingly nonwhite nation and electorate. Pew projects that 66.7 percent of eligible voters in 2020 will be white. In the presidential election in 2016, 71 percent of voters were white. In 2000, 76.4 percent of eligible voters were white, 10 points more than Pew projects for 2020. When President Reagan was elected in 1980, 88 percent of the electorate was white.

This week, Alabama and Missouri enacted legislation severely restricting abortions carried out in their states. In Missouri, abortions after eight weeks of pregnancy were banned. In Alabama all abortions except those necessary to preserve the life or health of the mother were outlawed. Sen. Kamala Harris (Calif) called these laws "an invitation to inflict the nightmare from The Handmaid's Tale on the women of this country."
