Eight members of the 1919 Chicago White Sox, also known as The Black Sox, were banned from Major League Baseball, for life; on August 3, 1921. Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis. (He was known as Judge Landis. Prior to becoming Baseball Commissioner, he served 17 years as a Federal judge.) issued this statement: “Regardless of the verdict of juries, no player who throws a ballgame, no player that undertakes or promises to throw a ballgame, no player that sits in conference with a bunch of crooked players and gamblers where the ways and means of throwing a game are discussed...

For the baseball fan who loves history, this is pretty awesome. From Dawson City Museum and Historical Society Collection as well as Library and Archives Canada comes some actual video footage of the notorious 1919 World Series (or the "world's series" as it was known at the time) between the Chicago White Sox and Cincinnati Reds. It's difficult to tell what exactly in happening in several portions of the video and there is no audio, but that's not really what it's all about, is it? Check this out:British Canadian Pathé News, 81A: [1919 World Series excerpt]Great stuff. Seasoned baseball minds...
  • Time to Revisit 1919 "Black Sox" Scandal? (Vanity)

Recent months have seen a flurry of books about the highly controversial 1919 World Series and the so-called “Black Sox.” The most notable are Red Legs and Black Sox by Dr. Susan Dellinger; and Burying the Black Sox by Gene Carney. Both are highly informative books that were a joy to read and have renewed my interest in “all things Black Sox.” I recently reread the Melvin Durslag Sporting News interview of Chick Gandil from 1956. Gandil was often cast as a ringleader of the plot to throw the 1919 World Series. Thirty seven years later, at age 69, he...

Biggio's wife slapped at White Sox's ballpark Guillen issues apology to Astro, condemns fan By JOSE DE JESUS ORTIZ Copyright 2005 Houston Chronicle Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen issued a public apology on behalf of his organization to Astros second baseman Craig Biggio, whose wife was slapped by a fan in the stands at U.S. Cellular Field. "I feel like it's our fault, and I talked to (Biggio) about it, and he knows we're sorry," Guillen said. "He knows it was something we couldn't control. It wasn't like a fight. (The fan) hit the lady and left." The incident...

South Side stigma: Scandal, mediocrity, obscurity are lumps fans have taken CHICAGO — Its most famous team is the one that cheated, the one forever branded the Black Sox. Its most enduring image might be the outfielder doused with beer while standing against the outfield wall, or maybe the two drunken fans running onto the field to attack a coach. Then again, it might be the decades of losing. Not the romantic kind tied to some mysterious curse, but the kind that comes with simply playing badly. As the Chicago White Sox take on the Los Angeles Angels for the...

In a startling development, it has been learned by this reporter (by overhearing a conversation in the men's room of a trendy San Francisco restaurant) that the Giants may have committed the most horrific violation against Major League Baseball since the Black Sox scandal of 1919. (Editor's Note: Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis, the Baseball Commissioner, may have never been able to help solve the scandal had Patrick Leahy been around at the time. Landis would have been held up in committee awaiting confirmation.) Here is what I have learned. Kubla Kahn, a former mental patient and distant cousin of the...
