ScienceDaily (Jan. 28, 2009) — A new scientific study led by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reaches a powerful conclusion about the climate change caused by future increases of carbon dioxide: to a large extent, there’s no going back. The pioneering study, led by NOAA senior scientist Susan Solomon, shows how changes in surface temperature, rainfall, and sea level are largely irreversible for more than 1,000 years after carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are completely stopped. The findings appear during the week of January 26 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. “Our study convinced us that current...

Continuing efforts to overturn more of the last administration's policies, President Obama signed a presidential memoranda today requesting the EPA consider approving a waiver that will allow 14 states to set their own stricter automobile emissions and fuel efficiency standards. In 2007, then-Environment Protection Agency administrator Steven Johnson denied California and 13 other states -- including Arizona, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington and New Jersey -- the right to set their own clean air standards, despite staff scientists' recommendation to do so. "California has shown bold and bipartisan leadership through its...

I had an OMG experience when I clicked on this. The Obama administration really intends to act in a big way on this climate change bull stuff. Don't miss Obama's video (you'll have to click through to the article.) Obama's caveat about there being only one president seem hollow here.-- AZLiberty We need strong U.S. leadership on climate change, especially as we head into next year's COP-15 talks. President-elect Obama has already spoken more boldly (by far) on climate change than almost any other American elected official:Obama on YouTube There is often, however, a large gap between words and...

When during a pre-election debate Barack Obama and John McCain both said that an apparent rise in autism cases might be connected to vaccines, those who knew better squirmed at the lack of scientific knowledge of the two remaining presidential candidates on this topic. In fact, studies have found no link between autism and vaccines. But televised statements by such high-profile people have a way of perpetuating myths. In it's third annual report, the UK group Sense about Science calls the two candidates out on the inaccurate statements, along with a long list of celebrities' scientifically inaccurate claims.

December 22, 2008, 7:00 a.m. See Jane’s Big Carbon FootprintBefore they boss us around, shouldn’t Obama’s science team act like they believe in global warming? By David Freddoso What’s your carbon footprint? Next year, it will probably be much smaller than that of Jane Lubchenco. The renowned climate-change crusader and professor of marine biology is Obama’s choice for administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). National Review Online has obtained an e-mail from Lubchenco’s husband, Oregon State University professor Bruce Menge, suggesting that the couple will contribute mightily to global warming next year after she takes the...

Continuing to staff his nascent administration with left-wing extremists, President-elect Barack Obama this weekend named John Holdren of Harvard University as his science advisor. Obama called Holdren “one of the most passionate and persistent voices of our time about the growing threat of climate change.” Commenting on Obama’s science and climate appointments, Todd Kent, a professor of political science at Texas University, said, “He doesn’t want the continual focus on the economy. I think he chose a Saturday address to focus on something else. I think what Obama is going to do is to use environment issues to keep the...

Accomplished and outspoken, they’re likely to tackle climate change head-on. Call it the “green team” or the “dream team.” Either way, President-elect Barack Obama’s choices to fill top science and environment-related posts in his new administration represent a remarkable assembly of talent. With his picks well in hand, Mr. Obama is positioned to reverse what many see as eight years of sluggish action in the US and internationally on global warming. The picks also boost the prospects for wider use and further development of alternative energy sources. And the nominees – particularly those who come directly out of the science...
