Regardless of the merits or demerits of the Biden administration’s policies on the wars in Ukraine and Gaza and the wider Middle East, it has become clear that the United States has been using and giving away its missiles faster than it can produce them. It is also clear that from the perspective of missile inventories and production, the United States is far from prepared to engage confidently in a sustained direct conflict with a peer competitor like China. This is demonstrated by the fact that U.S. missile and artillery shell reserves are currently inadequate to provide Ukraine with what...

The United States must recalibrate its nuclear deterrence posture and align the stockpile to address the realities of the current threat environment. The current landscape, however, is characterized by rapidly evolving threats, which have reinstated the salience of nuclear weapons and deterrence, albeit in a more complex and multidimensional framework. In addition, the age of the U.S. stockpile has reached an all-time high; the average age of U.S. warheads is between 25 and 30 years old, and no new warhead designs have been introduced since the early 1990s.3 Further, all legs of the triad’s delivery systems are serving well past their...

Liberal legal scholar Jonathan Turley has called out Democrat President Joe Biden for leaving billions of dollars worth of military equipment for the Taliban during the withdrawal from Afghanistan last year. As Slay News previously reported, the Department of Defense Inspector General’s report released Thursday revealed that the U.S. military left $7 billion in equipment and weapons behind. Despite having months to prepare for the exit, the Biden administration “took no steps to remove or destroy” our military equipment and “elected to leave this arsenal intact to the Taliban.” Turley said: “Defense Department Inspector General has released its long-awaited report...

1,000 nuclear warheads by 2030 The updated estimate marks a dramatic increase from the projection reported in last year’s China Military Power report, which placed the tally around 400 warheads within a decade. Washington has previously called on China to join the U.S. and Russia in a new arms control treaty. The report also raises concerns over Beijing’s increasingly aggressive behavior toward Taiwan. “The historical task of the complete reunification of the motherland must be fulfilled and will definitely be fulfilled,” Xi said in an October 8 address.

The Pentagon released a new nuclear arms policy Friday that calls for the introduction of two new types of weapons, effectively ending Obama-era efforts to reduce the size and scope of the U.S. arsenal and minimize the role of nuclear weapons in defense planning. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said in an introductory note to the new policy — the first update to the military’s nuclear strategy since 2010 — that the changes reflect a need to “look reality in the eye” and “see the world as it is, not as we wish it to be.” The previous administration’s policy hinged on what...
