Apple AAPL +0.8% (AAPL) reported earnings after the market close. The Apple stock ended the regular session at $550.50. In the after-hours it has touched $501, down about 8%. As I listened to the conference call, just like I have listened to every conference call since before the launch of iPhone, I could not help but conclude that the incredible multi-year iPhone run has ended. Here is why. Apple only sold 51 million iPhones during the quarter. This compares to consensus of about 56 million iPhones. This is one of the biggest misses in recent memory. There were two big...

Fearing rapidly plummeting sales of traditional laptops and desktop computers -- which collapsed by as much as 10 percent in 2013 -- manufacturers are planning a revolution against Microsoft and the standard Windows operating system, analysts say. At the mammoth Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in early January, multiple computer makers will unveil systems that simultaneously run two different operating systems, both Windows and the Android OS that powers many of the world’s tablets and smartphones, two different analysts said recently. The new devices will be called “PC Plus” machines, explained Tim Bajarin of Creative Strategies. "A PC...

Did you know that Android - version 2.2 and later - comes with a feature that lets you track and manage your mobile device? Look for Google Settings among all the apps on your handset. It is denoted by a grey icon with a lower case 'g' and a gear symbol. Tap on the app, and choose the last option which reads 'Android Device Manager' . From here, you can activate features that will locate your device in case it is lost or misplaced, and you can also remotely lock and factory reset your handset. After you've checked these options...

BERLIN (AP) — The U.S. National Security Agency is able to crack protective measures on iPhones, BlackBerry and Android devices, giving it access to users' data on all major smartphones, according to a report Sunday in German news weekly Der Spiegel. The magazine cited internal documents from the NSA and its British counterpart GCHQ in which the agencies describe setting up dedicated teams for each type of phone as part of their effort to gather intelligence on potential threats such as terrorists. The data obtained this way includes contacts, call lists, SMS traffic, notes and location information, Der Spiegel reported....

OK, I'm confused. Why would any company only write an iPhone/iPad app for their product? The last time I checked there were about 10 times more Android device than iPhone/iPads. Even Drudge only has an iPhone/iPad app. Nothing for Android. Is it just the cachet of the iPhone, or am I missing something here?

Has anyone else run into a posting glitch using Chrome on an Android device? After receiving a Chrome browser update yesterday, I can no longer post to FR from my phone. (I had never encountered any difficulties before this update.) The first word that I enter as a reply to a thread gets repeated when I hit the space following it. Trying to position after the repeated word to delete it just repeats that same first word over and over. I've tried logging out of FR and back in again with no change. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks, Bob.

Victory can be defined in countless ways, of course, but here in the Linux blogosphere, Microsoft's recent release of its core Office app for Android is a pretty good example. "Linus won a long time ago," said blogger Mike Stone. "Android is flying high, Linux is dominating on servers and supercomputers. Linux pretty much mops up every market it's in."What a difference a day makes, as the old saying goes -- or, perhaps more aptly here in the Linux community, what a difference an app makes.Which app, you may ask? Why that would be Microsoft Office for Android, of course...

Just over a month after making available a mobile version of its Office suite for iPhone users, Microsoft is doing the same with an Android version of Office Mobile. And just like it did with the iPhone version, Microsoft is tying the Android version of Office Mobile to Office 365. Users who want to use the mobile versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint on their Android phones will need to have an Office 365 subscription, such as Office 365 Home Premium, Office 365 ProPlus or these other SKUs to get them.Office Mobile for Android phones (known officially as "Office Mobile...

The Trayvon Martin trial recently finished its tenth day of testimony, with both the prosecution and the defense trying to decipher whether screams for help heard over a recorded telephone conversation belonged to Martin or that of George Zimmerman, who claimed to have killed Martin in self-defense. A few other things happened, too, like Judge Debra Nelson ruling that the THC content within Martin’s blood stream–caused by marijuana smoking–at the time of his death is relevant information. But in the case the news of the trail doesn’t satisfy news hounds, Android App developer Trade Digital, Inc. has you covered with...

As NSA data collection from Verizon Wireless is defended this morning by no less than the office of the President of the United States, actor Wil Wheaton and top Android hacker/developer Koushik Dutta have announced their departure from the carrier. The order in question was revealed yesterday, having originated from the FBI and passed down to the public media by an anonymous source. The order shows how the National Security Agency uses Verizon specifically to mine records of phone calls, numbers, and everything in-between for data. Data such as “unique identifiers”—unspecified beyond that, call length, number of individuals on each...

AMD Fusion Chips for Tablets Set to Support Android OSAfter a long time of supporting only Microsoft Corp.’s Widows operating system, Advanced Micro Devices is changing its stance towards Google Android and Google Chrome platforms. In a bid to become successful on the market of tablets, ultra low-cost personal computers and, perhaps, even smartphones, the company will support Google’s OSes."We are very committed to Windows 8; we think it is a great operating system, but we also see a market for Android and Chrome developing as well. […] I think Android and Chrome tend to be in the entry form...

According to Google's own statistics released today, a version of Android called Gingerbread is the most popular version on Android devices today. This fall, Gingerbread will be three years old. So why are more Android phones running (by tech standards) an ancient operating system? There are a lot of reasons, but the most important one is that companies like Samsung, HTC, and LG that make Android phones are notoriously awful at supporting them with timely software updates after launch. That's because those manufacturers like to customize Android with their own look and special software features, meaning they have to put...
