AMD Fusion Chips for Tablets Set to Support Android OS

After a long time of supporting only Microsoft Corp.’s Widows operating system, Advanced Micro Devices is changing its stance towards Google Android and Google Chrome platforms. In a bid to become successful on the market of tablets, ultra low-cost personal computers and, perhaps, even smartphones, the company will support Google’s OSes.

"We are very committed to Windows 8; we think it is a great operating system, but we also see a market for Android and Chrome developing as well. […] I think Android and Chrome tend to be in the entry form factors—the tablets, the low-end clamshells,"  Lisa Su, senior vice president and general manager of global business units at AMD, reports IDG News Service.

Independent efforts are already under way to bring Android support to AMD-based tablets and PCs. AMD also offers the BlueStacks emulator to run Android apps on Windows PCs. ARM, Intel and MIPS chips are already compatible with Android, though most of the native Android code is written for ARM.

Why would, or rather did, AMD voluntarily stay away from a large market? Are they not in the business of earning money?

A decent question,....anything I say is speculation,....but it might have something to do with relations with Microsoft.

Still no comments from AMD relative to Linux specifically.

That was one thought I had as well, but how much would MS have had to pay AMD to forego a juicy part of the market?

Corollary: Would that even make sense for MS?
