(Headline USA) “Son of a Sinner” singer Jelly Roll was the big winner at the CMT Music Awards, as the rapper-turned-country singer took home three awards on Sunday as an outsider who won over fans with his confessional songs. The tattooed singer got emotional during the show in Austin, Texas, which aired on CBS, as he thanked the country radio industry for its acceptance and shouted out to those who felt like him. “You can be whatever you want to be. Gregg was the fourth member of the band to die, but the first of natural causes—though his past lifestyle certainly contributed to those causes. I say American music pioneer because categorizing him in blues, rock, or especially Southern rock is pointless. Allman's influence goes far beyond Lynyrd Skynyrd and Phish. The Allman Brothers was made up of only one Allman brother, Gregg, far longer than not, and the group has re-created itself and been reborn at least twice, and very successfully.

Scooter Herring, a former Allman Brothers Band road manager whose drug conviction in the 1970s contributed to the breakup of the band, has died at 67. Herring died Saturday. A spokesman for Hart's Mortuary in Macon says a funeral service is scheduled Wednesday at Harvest Cathedral in Macon. Federal prosecutors went after Herring during the 1970s, charging that he helped supply singer and keyboardist Gregg Allman with cocaine.
