A decade and a day ago, you could describe a guy as being tall, Muslim, from the Bronx, and no one's eyes would start darting. Back then, the word "Muslim" was merely an adjective. Today it's an accusation. An allegation. An affront. One that we as Americans actually feel compelled to respond to, like cooties on the playground. An allegation that, if it's actually true, makes you want to hang your head in shame, like being called a fatso. Our President was repeatedly accused of being Muslim. Whole foods was recently accused of celebrating Ramadan by introducing its "Saffron Road"...

There’s a memorial in Brooklyn that honors all the first responders that were killed on Sept. 11 called the Brooklyn Wall of Remembrance. There are 417 faces of first responders that were lost that day. Back in 2006, they had completed about one-third of that memorial and they ran out of money. A firefighter friend of mine took me out to see it and I offered to try and help them raise the additional money to complete the memorial. They liked that idea, so we put a concert together at Brooklyn College where my band, Lieutenant Dan Band, played, and...

I still have my unused airline ticket from September 11, 2001, ten years ago today. My wife and I had flown to Washington for a week’s vacation that included a White House tour, a visit with our Congressman, and some play time in the Atlantic Ocean. We were driving our rental car back to the airport late that Tuesday morning to catch our flight home when we heard the news that changed all of us. This tenth anniversary will remind every American of their personal story of that morning and the quandary of trying to comprehend such ultimate viciousness. My...

It was a fitting tribute to salute their fallen colleagues, as 343 flags were carried by an honour guard for each one of the firemen who died on 9/11. Firemen from across the U.S. gathered in Manhattan, New York, around St Patrick's Cathedral, as a memorial service was held after an honour guard had marched down Fifth Avenue. The largest fire department in the U.S. held the ceremony as part of a weekend of events commemorating the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks that devastated America in 2001.

9/11 is probably one of the hardest topics to write about because so many emotions arise: sadness for the loss of so many innocent lives; anger, because someone dared to attack the United States of America; and pride because of the strength and patriotism Americans showed during such a tragic moment in our history. We all can remember where we were ten years ago today. I was just six years old and seeing America under attack forever changed me, my convictions, my feelings towards America. I'm never going to forget that day. 10 years later, there's still a scar in...

My recollections of September 11th are not very exciting: I was far away from the destruction, but like many New Yorkers, I was personally touched. I am a doctor, and, at the time, I was an attending physician at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, in northern Manhattan, at the highest point of Manhattan Island, aptly named Washington Heights. September 11, 2001 was a gloriousy beautiful day: crisp September air, clear blue skies, no clouds, not a hint of haze. I went to our scheduled Infectious Disease conference, and at near the end of the conference, our divisonal secretary rushed into the...

Seven years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, there seems to be less attention paid to the anniversary of that date. The Rev. Mike Yakawich doesn't want the nearly 3,000 people who died in the attacks to be forgotten. So each year, he helps organize an hourlong memorial ceremony at the Yellowstone County Courthouse. "I've always tried to make it a celebration of life," said Yakawich, pastor of the Family Church in Billings. He has been part of similar events each year since the attacks occurred. Like most people, Yakawich still remembers the details of that day. Yakawich has noticed a...

Between a long commute home (made longer by stopping for gas), having dinner, going right back out again to go to church (we had several 9/11 testimonies, including one from me, then we went out to the flagpole and sang the anthem and pledged to the flag, which was at half mast), rushing back home, and showering, I didn't get to the computer until maybe 9:30 pm EDT and was too pooped to do much on the net other than get the night's ball scores; I didn't visit FR that night. So if someone could link me to whatever thread(s)...

DO NOT FORGETI sat in a movie theater watching "Schindler's List," asked myself, "Why didn't the Jews fight back?" Now I know why. I sat in a movie theater, watching "Pearl Harbor" and asked myself, "Why weren't we prepared?" Now I know why. Civilized people cannot fathom, much less predict, the actions of evil people. On September 11, dozens of capable airplane passengers allowed themselves to be overpowered by a handful of poorly armed terrorists because they did not comprehend the depth of hatred that motivated their captors. On September 11, thousands of innocent people were murdered because too many...

We have little more than a week left to get the word out across this great land we love and call the United States of America. On Wednesday, September 11, 2002, all Americans who will be driving a motor vehicle are being asked to do so with their HEADLIGHTS ON. Contact the newspaper in your town or at your school. Call the television and radio stations in your area. Inform your elected representatives. Pass the word at your place of employment. Tell your family, friends and neighbors. Send this e-mail to people. Discuss this event in chatrooms and on message...
