Daily use of a mushroom extract supported the immune system in clearing human papillomavirus (HPV) infections, according to researchers with UTHealth Houston. The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase II study was supported by a grant from the National Institutes of Health (1R03CA212935). "Our results show that AHCC supplementation may help most patients eliminate their HPV infection and may decrease the long-term risk of HPV-related cancers," said Judith A. Smith, PharmD, lead researcher on the study and professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. "Through this study, as well as multiple other...

As the COVID pandemic unfolded in 2020, I predicted that before it was over, we’d surely hear calls for a cabinet level “Department of Pandemic Planning” or some other equivalent of the Department of Homeland Security that we set up in the aftermath of 9/11 to “coordinate” government agency activity at all levels of government. That prediction has moved a step closer to fulfillment. From the New York Times today: A bipartisan panel of health experts calls on Tuesday for an overhaul of the American public health system that would greatly expand the role of the federal government, giving Washington...

(Here is the first part of the story ...) The East Texas city of Texarkana experienced a rare weather event to close out the year: It rained fish. The phenomenon, known as “animal rain,” occurred Wednesday in the city, where officials declared in a Facebook post that 2021 “is pulling out all of the tricks…including raining fish.” “And no, this isn’t a joke,” the post continued. The city asked residents who witnessed the strange event for their fish photos — some provided them in a lengthy comment thread, along with notes of disbelief — and offered a quick primer on...

I voted for Trump twice, and I’m a lawyer and I played a small role in his challenge to the results. My question for this board is: why shouldn’t we pick a winner? Trump lost. He lost the election and he lost, pathetically, in the post-election challenges. He lost those legal challenges before Trump-appointed judges as well Bush appointees, Obama appointees, and Clinton appointees. He’s persuaded 40-something percent of the country but not matter what he does, he cannot – can not – persuade more people. He has not done so and will not do so. It may suck, but...

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell conceded on Wednesday that the Federal Reserve’s battle to bring down inflation could trigger a recession. “It’s certainly a possibility,” Mr. Powell said Wednesday during the first of two days of congressional hearings. “We are not trying to provoke and do not think we will need to provoke a recession, but we do think it’s absolutely essential” to tame inflation. [cut] Powell told the Senate Banking Committee that achieving a soft landing would be “very challenging.” “The events of the last few months around the world have made it more difficult for us to achieve...

A white Tesla Model S spontaneously burst into flames in a Rancho Cordova, California wrecking yard after the car had spent weeks sitting there after a collision. The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District said that firefighters arrived at the wrecking yard to find the Tesla fully engulfed in flames. Each time the firefighters attempted to extinguish the flames, the Tesla's battery would reignite the fire. The fire department posted an Instagram video of the ordeal, saying that even when firefighters moved the Tesla onto it's side to spray the battery directly, the car would burst into flames again 'due to the...

Crisis On The Rails: Pilot Flying J CEO on Rail Mandates & Fuel Costs By Michelle Edwards -May 31, 2022 Screenshot / American Journal of Transportation Share The ongoing “crisis on the rails” has paralyzed farmers, leaving them literally “hours away from depopulating herds.” The rail crisis, which is “harming the nation’s economy,” impacts the supply chain of U.S. agriculture, energy, and shipping across the board. To address the severe situation, the Surface Transportation Board (STB) held a hearing in late April, giving those affected the...

RUSSIA's "outdated weapons" have proven to be no match for Ukrainian defences as the latest intelligence report from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) shows 55 percent of Russian-backed forces have been wiped out in the Donbas region. With the focus of the conflict heavily concentrated in the Donbas region in and around the strategic industrial city of Severodonetsk, Ukraine has called on the west to supply extra weapons to defend the territory. Russia has announced it has all but captured the city as heavy shelling continues, however, the cost of the operation has taken its toll on Russian personnel, with...

It’s not just ExxonMobil that came out swinging after President Biden accused oil company executives of profiteering off the high gas prices and refusing to restore refining capacity that was reduced at the outset of the pandemic. Mike Wirth, the CEO of Chevron, responded to the president’s June 14th letter, pointing out the company produced the greatest volume of oil and gas in its history last year and has invested heavily in clean technologies. But he was also frank about the White House’s attitude and policies toward the industry. “I want to be clear that Chevron shares your concerns over...

Quantum sensors, which detect the most minute variations in magnetic or electrical fields, have enabled precision measurements in materials science and fundamental physics. But these sensors have only been capable of detecting a few specific frequencies of these fields, limiting their usefulness. Now, researchers at MIT have developed a method to enable such sensors to detect any arbitrary frequency, with no loss of their ability to measure nanometer-scale features. The new method, for which the team has already applied for patent protection, is described in the journal Physical Review X... Quantum sensors can take many forms; they're essentially systems in...

After Senators John Cornyn (R-TX) and Chris Murphy (D-CT) finally released the text of their new gun bill — the "Bipartisan Safer Communities Act" — on Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) quickly rushed to hold the first procedural vote on the legislation within an hour of the text going public and before many senators had a chance to digest the full 80-page bill. Tuesday night's vote prevailed 64 to 34, but the speed with which Schumer moved to a vote drew the ire of those who prefer to study legislation before voting on it, including GOP Senator Josh...

Self-propelled howitzers, the Panzerhaubitze 2000, are the first heavy weapons sent by Germany to arrive in Ukraine. Ukraine confirmed the howitzers and other heavy weapons were received, but says they are just a drop in the ocean of what is needed to fend off the Russian assault. Russia continues to make advances in the Donbas. Ukrainian officials say its forces have captured several more settlements and now control almost all of the Luhansk region. Meanwhile, a diplomatic dispute between Russia and Lithuania is escalating after the Baltic state blocked the rail transit of sanctioned goods through its territory to the...

A newly-released Navy training video teaches sailors to use the “right” pronouns, “show that we’re allies,” and create “a safe space for everybody,” while instructing service members on how to proceed after having “misgendered” someone. The official U.S. Navy video posted by Air Force Staff Sergeant John Vannucci, according to The Defense Visual Information Distribution Service (DVIDS), begins with two rainbow-clad hosts — both Navy civilians — introducing their personal pronouns and announcing they are there “to talk about pronouns.” “Using the right pronouns is a really simple way to affirm someone’s identity,” one host says. “It is a signal...

"Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh." His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over...
