HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — At a busy market in a poor township outside Harare this week, Nyasha Ndou kept his mask in his pocket, as hundreds of other people, mostly unmasked, jostled to buy and sell fruit and vegetables displayed on wooden tables and plastic sheets. As in much of Zimbabwe, here the coronavirus is quickly being relegated to the past, as political rallies, concerts and home gatherings have returned.“COVID-19 is gone, when did you last hear of anyone who has died of COVID-19?” Ndou said. “The mask is to protect my pocket,” he said. “The police demand bribes so...

WAUKESHA, Wis. - The suspect in a Christmas parade crash in suburban Milwaukee that killed six people was in court Tuesday where first-degree intentional homicide charges were filed, a crime that can carry the stiffest penalty possible under Wisconsin law — mandatory life in prison. The prosecutor in the case indicated a sixth count of first-degree intentional homicide will be filed – because they have learned of a sixth death, a child, as a result of the Christmas parade tragedy.

Commercially available quadcopter drones carrying small amounts of explosives are “the most concerning tactical development since the rise of the improvised explosive device in Iraq,” U.S. Marine Gen. Kenneth McKenzie Jr., senior U.S. commander for the Middle East, said last February. But now drones are political weapons as well, and it will get worse. Two weeks ago three quadcopters flew into the heavily fortified ‘Green Zone’ in Baghdad to attack the home of Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, who won last month’s national election and is working to form a new coalition government. Two of the drones were shot down,...

A former Japanese diplomat confessed to taking part in the 1895 assassination of Korean Empress Myeongseong, according to a Korean historian who examined recently discovered letters that provide a fresh account of the brutal slaying. In one of the letters, the diplomat proclaimed, “We killed the queen,” and went on to detail the circumstances surrounding the assassination. The slaying, known as “the Eulmi Incident” in Korea, involved a group of...

As president, Donald Trump was a media maximalist whose unavoidable-for-comment style helped generate saturation news coverage, for better or worse. President Joe Biden has taken a stingier approach to his dealings with the press — and not all his allies believe it’s working out. After nine months in office, Biden has conducted roughly a dozen one-on-one interviews with major print and television news outlets. That compares with more than 50 for Trump, and more than 100 for Barack Obama, in the same period, according to West Wing record keepers. One recent poll showed a declining number of Democrats with favorable...

Former U.S. assistant attorney Neama Rahmani said there is “no question” that Kyle Rittenhouse will face civil lawsuits from the families of the people he killed within a matter of months or even weeks. A jury acquitted Rittenhouse on Friday of all charges related to the killings of Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber. Rittenhouse testified at his criminal trial that he killed Rosenbaum and Huber in self-defense during the Kenosha riots in August 2020. Rahmani likened Rittenhouse’s legal situation to that of OJ Simpson, who was found civilly liable for the deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman and...
