On September 7, 1776, during the Revolutionary War, the American submersible craft Turtle attempts to attach a time bomb to the hull of British Admiral Richard Howe’s flagship Eagle in New York Harbor. It was the first use of a submarine in warfare. Donated to the Patriot cause after the outbreak of war with Britain in 1775, Ezra Lee piloted the craft unnoticed out to the 64-gun HMS Eagle in New York Harbor on September 7, 1776. As Lee worked to anchor a time bomb to the hull, he could see British seamen on the deck above, but they failed...

The end of the Afghanistan War is a good time to look back and reflect on what we did wrong. Republicans are trying to redirect blame toward President Joe Biden for what happened during the withdrawal. Better thinkers are looking further back. How much did Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and Donald Trump contribute to the problem? George W. Bush started the war but the nation demanded it after 9/11. Is there nothing that America did right? Actually, there was. Being old gives me perspective. I personally saw a just war in the Middle East, fought for the right reasons, in...

We find ourselves in a Cold Civil War. But we have no real generals. A war without generals is no war at all. There is no liberty or death, only death, the death of our once cherished republic. Leading Republicans who should be our generals fight battles, sometimes with spirit, but they don't seem to see the war in its entirety, particularly its cultural aspects. This is a war not over the size of government or taxes, but over the American way of life. The war is between those who salute the flag, and those who take a knee. Those...

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau derided Canadians who protested against him at a campaign stop in Newmarket, ON, lashing out at what he called “anti-vaxxer mobs” who are “racist,” “mysoginistic, and “don’t believe in science.” While speaking with reporters on Sunday in Welland, ON, Trudeau was asked about those who demonstrated against him a day earlier in Newmarket. He remarked:

In these troubled times, it pays to be on alert, because global events are moving at a pace that is absolutely breathtaking. But I will be on a higher state of alert than usual during the month of September, and I will explain why in this article. Many people instinctively understand that things are taking a very bad turn, and sales at emergency food companies have gone through the roof in recent months. Unfortunately, the vast majority of those that are feverishly preparing don't understand the bigger picture, and that is one of the reasons why I wrote my new...

Australian health chief Dr. Kerry Chant says that COVID will be with us “forever” and people will have to “get used to” taking endless booster vaccines. The New South Wales Chief Health Officer made the alarming comments during a recent press conference. “We need to get used to being vaccinated with COVID vaccines for the future … I can’t see COVID is not going to be with us forever,” said Chant said during a press conference last week. “As a public health doctor we always want to have diseases go, to be totally eliminated, but that is not on the...

“Therefore the Lord will wait, that he may be gracious to you; and therefore he will be exalted, that he may have mercy on you. For the Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him. For the people shall dwell in Zion at Jerusalem; you shall weep no more. He will be very gracious to you at the sound of your cry; when he hears it, he will answer you” (Isaiah 30:18–19, NKJV).Isaiah was saying, “If you’ll just wait on the Lord, if you’ll cry out to him again, and return to trusting him—he’ll...

“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death” (Romans 8:2). The moment the Holy Spirit places us in Christ, He also frees us from the power of sin and death. The third stanza of Charles Wesley’s great hymn “And Can It Be?” describes the composer’s thoughts regarding the Holy Spirit’s saving work in his life: Long my imprisoned spirit lay Fast bound in sin and nature’s night. Thine eye diffused a quick’ning ray: I woke—the dungeon flamed with light! My chains fell off, my heart...

Nine Notable Ladies in the Life of Gavin By Ted Martin Special to Press California"Women are smarter in politics, smarter in civics, they're smarter in economics. Women rule," California Gov. Gavin Newsom thundered in a recent stump speech to stave off a statewide recall that could oust him from office on September 14. Given his blanket gender statement, it might be prudent for voters to review his relationships with the opposite sex over the years to understand his thinking. As it turns out, based his conduct as it relates to moral and legal norms, it would seem little thinking has...

In one week from today, The Wife (aka Mrs. MplsSteve) and I will be in Gettysburg for a few days. Obviously, we're gonna visit the battlefield. We lined up a tour guide thru the Gettysburg Heritage Center and at least for the first night, we'll be staying at the Best Western on Steinwehr Avenue. I have a few travel brochures and have looked them over but I'm looking for any recommendations or advice on what else to see and do there. That includes places to stay that don't cost an arm and a leg as well as places to eat....

At least two of the 9-11 hijackers probably had a U.S.-based support network, according to a former FBI agent. Danny Gonzalez worked on “Operation Encore,” the still-secret investigation into the two Saudi hijackers who were based in San Diego. Gonzalez told CBS News he’s confident the records of that operation will show the hijackers had help. “19 hijackers cannot commit 3,000 mass murders by themselves,” Gonzalez told the network.

A New Jersey student has said he is barred from taking classes at Rutgers University because he has not been vaccinated — even though he is only studying virtually from home. Logan Hollar, 22, told NJ.com that he largely ignored the school’s COVID mandate “because all my classes were remote” from his Sandyston home, some 70 miles from Rutgers’ campus in New Brunswick. But he was locked out of his Rutgers email and related accounts when he went to pay his tuition at the end of last month — and was told that he needed to be vaccinated even though...
