For centuries now, even millennia, May 1 has been a very big day. Ancient Romans, Etruscans, Greeks and Celts had seasonal festivals as May began, celebrating the coming of summer… modern European countries have May Day carnivals, flower sales, and dances. The Catholic Church considers May the month of Our Lady, a special time of devotion to that greatest of mortal role models… for kids, May is the winding down of the school year, and for adults, it is the long-awaited beginning of planting season (here in the north, at least). And so of course the Left had to go...

The anti-submarine exercise off the coast of northern Norway on Friday comes amid increased Russian submarine sailings into the North Atlantic. Russia has in the course of the last two years exercised its bastion defense concept with navy vessels in the Norwegian Sea on several occasions. In case of global escalating military tensions, ensuring areal denial in this part of the North Atlantic would be crucial for protecting Russia’s ballistic missile submarines in the Barents Sea. ***** Approximately 1,200 sailors participated in the bilateral U.S., British anti-submarine exercise off the coast of northern Norway. The U.S. warships involved were the...

President Trump's reelection campaign isn't shying away from hitting Joe Biden over his handling of allegations that he sexually assaulted and harassed a former Senate aide in 1993. The incumbent's campaign team, in particular, seized on accusations of hypocrisy over how the presumptive 2020 Democratic presidential nominee and other prominent members of the party supported the women who made sexual misconduct claims against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and their reaction to Biden's accuser, Tara Reade. “The double standard exhibited by Biden, prominent liberal women’s groups, and Democrat elected officials — some of whom want to be Biden’s running mate...

A federal judge threw out the unequal pay claim by players on the U.S. women’s national soccer team in a surprising loss for the defending World Cup champions but allowed their allegation of discriminatory working conditions to go to trial. Players led by Alex Morgan sued in March 2019, claiming they have not been paid equally under their collective bargaining agreement to what the men’s national team receives under its labor deal. They asked for more than $66 million in damages under the Equal Pay Act and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In a 32-page decision...

Brigades loyal to Najaf cleric split from Popular Mobilisation Forces after efforts to wrest control from Iran-backed commanders fail. An attempt by Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani to wrest control of Iraq’s Popular Mobilisation Forces from Iranian-backed factions has ended with the national Shia leader giving a green light instead for the dismantling of the militia alliance, military commanders and officials have told Middle East Eye. That process began last week when four armed factions associated with Sistani, the most senior cleric in the holy city of Najaf, were disengaged from the Popular Mobilisation Authority, which oversees the PMFs, and placed...

I tried to search FreeRepublic for any article title that included the words "Marcy," or "Marcy Park" and I came up empty. No articles matches the search. This, to me, seemed unbelievable. Due to ongoing concerns about the coronavirus pandemic, multiple Western Massachusetts defense attorneys are urging area sheriffs not to let correctional officers attend a Northampton rally in favor of Republican President Donald Trump and then go to work after the event. The request was made after “Correctional Officers for Trump 2020” appeared as a listed contact for the rally, called “Trump Standout & China Virus Liberation Celebration.” The event is one of dozens happening across the U.S. this week in support of Trump’s reelection and the reopening of the country amid the COVID-19 public health crisis. Thursday, President Trump sent the media into their latest tailspin by saying he had seen evidence that the coronavirus originated in a lab in China. This is not a new theory and is actually being investigated by the United States government. But apparently late-night host Jimmy Kimmel knows more than our own intelligence officials. On his show Thursday night, he claimed it was a crazy conspiracy theory to feed the president’s “wingnuts.” Following up to questions asked during Thursday's briefing about the virus originating from a lab in Wuhan, China, President Trump said the virus "could've been stopped." During the...

The order does not apply to children under the age of 2 and people with medical conditions who would be negatively affected by the requirement. ... Iraq’s revenues plummeted in April amid a historic oil price crash, the Oil Ministry said Friday, raising concerns over how the country will cope with severe financial shortfalls while struggling to contain the coronavirus pandemic. As the coronavirus pandemic spreads across America, many of the nation’s governors find themselves in a political vise, squeezed between pressure to reopen local economies amid record unemployment and to keep citizens safe from a highly contagious disease. No region in the country has met the public health crisis with a wider range of responses than the Midwest, which is home to large rural swaths with fewer cases of the virus and major cities such as Detroit and Chicago that are among the hardest hit. As the U.S. tops 1 million people sickened by the virus and 61,000 deaths, differing...
