A lawyer for Andrew McCabe, the former FBI official facing the possibility of federal charges, is making a fresh attempt to pressure prosecutors to drop the case against him – citing supposed "rumors" that a grand jury has already declined to indict him. Grand jury proceedings are highly secretive, and the status of McCabe's case remains unclear. Speculation was widespread earlier Thursday that he could soon be facing prosecution as U.S. Attorney Jessie Liu recommended moving forward with charges, and the DOJ rejected a last-ditch appeal from McCabe.

Donald Trump’s presidency can often feel like an inevitable catastrophe that gets easier and easier to become desensitized to and disengaged from. Trump has successfully deconstructed and rendered irrelevant the traditional neoliberal niceties that have conveniently shielded this country from confronting its history, and continued practice, of structural violence: Trump is an indecent man who has lived an indecent life, and runs the country in accordance with this indecency — yet, unlike his predecessors, he makes no attempt to hide his amorality, and we make no attempt to remain shocked and horrified by his cruelty. The ongoing detention of innumerable...

The employee of a Florida construction manufacturing company who allegedly stabbed five people on Wednesday did so after he learned he might be fired, according to police. Antwann Brown, 41, was charged with five counts of attempted murder after he allegedly used a pocketknife to stab five people, which included employees of Dyke Industries and one other person who was at the Tallahassee business for a job interview, the city's police department said. Brown was in "good spirits" before arriving at work, a co-worker who gave him a ride told investigators. But, once there, Brown seemingly overheard his supervisor having...

In an appearance Wednesday on CBS-TV’s “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” Maine horror novelist Stephen King was sharply critical of U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine. King, who has frequently assailed Republican politicians including President Trump on Twitter, told Colbert that he wanted a senator with “a little bit more of a liberal bent.” “She claims to have a liberal bent. But really, that’s not true,” King said, clenching his fist in the air. Colbert held up a photo of a King tweet from a few days earlier that read, “Hey-hey, ho-ho, Susan Collins has got to go.”

In the wake of the tragic February 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, states have increasingly looked to so-called “red flag” laws as a means of combating gun violence. To date, 17 states and the District of Columbia have enacted some version of red flag legislation, and many more have considered similar provisions. The general idea behind these laws is to better identify individuals posing extreme risks of danger to themselves or others and to disarm them before they commit acts of violence. This is often accomplished by permitting non-state actors to request that...

John Bolton’s departure from the White House was inevitable – as was his instant rehabilitation by the woke Resistance – but as the reasons for his ouster emerge, the bizarre embrace of this warmonger has only gotten worse. First came the efforts to cast Bolton as some kind of “important check” on Donald Trump’s impulses. God forbid, after all, he might opt for diplomacy over sheer brute force. Then Trump spoke and confirmed all their worst fears. Bolton’s “tough guy” rhetoric was indeed hampering diplomatic efforts with North Korea, particularly as he suggested the US follow the “Libya model” in...

"They hate religion," New York Times columnist Timothy Egan wrote recently in a column titled "Why People Hate Religion," "because, at a moment to stand up and be counted on the right side of history, religion is used as moral cover for despicable behavior." This is true only if you see religion as synonymous with white evangelical Christianity, the group that, polls confirm, shows high support for President Donald Trump. While Egan tips his hat to Catholics who are doing charitable work, it's clear that by "religion" he means the religious right. But there are many of us people of...

If you want to know why Invasion USA continues apace, look no further than Big Migration, a lucrative racket so brazen that border-jumping migrants “can now offer Yelp-style reviews for attaining the finest in illegal alien–enabling services, not just in one’s choice of smuggling coyote, but in all the vast numbers of choices in NGOs offering shelters and services,” writes American Thinker’s Monica Showalter. So much for illegals being “in the shadows.” It’s just one of many outrages outlined in border security crusader Michelle Malkin’s new book Open Borders Inc: Who’s Funding America’s Destruction?, which was released Tuesday. As for...

This enthusiastic dog clearly thought he would make a much better selfie subject than his owners after photo bombing their pre-wedding photographs. Alfredo Garcia da Silva, 32, and his fiancé Joyce Sabino, 26, from Campo Grande, Brazil, wanted to get a few sweet snaps in with each other before their big day. Commissioning Nícolas Carrelo Cabral, 27, the soon-to-be married couple decided to bring their dog Thor to the shoot. But the excited pooch couldn't resist getting involved - sticking both his face and behind in front of the camera.

After the 9/11 attacks, we began to hear that cliche about how “the terrorists will have won” if we let ourselves become so consumed with fear that we no longer act rationally. Well, the future is now. That’s my reaction to that decision to cancel the annual Labor Day parade in South Plainfield because a guy left some fireworks in a bar in Sea Bright. When I got an email from the Governor’s Office Monday morning saying this year’s parade had been canceled, I figured it might be because of the weather. -snip- Nope. It soon turned out that the...

“Listen. I gotta break it to you . . . I’m post-Christian. . . . I don’t believe it anymore. I don’t believe any of it.” These are the words former Christian minister Bart Campolo recalls speaking to his famous evangelist father, Tony Campolo, after leaving the faith of his youth. He explained that his journey to secular humanism was a 30-year process of passing through every stage of heresy. In other words, his theology “progressed” from conservative to liberal to entirely secular. He predicted that in 10 years, 30 percent to 40 percent of so-called progressive Christians will...

One of the toughest questions for any politician – or anyone for that matter – is the question of whether he should trust his instincts. The case of John Bolton offers a textbook example. Reports say that President Trump’s first impression regarding John Bolton was to steer clear of him because of his mustache. Perhaps it might have made more sense to steer clear of him for the obvious reason that his foreign-policy views are demonstrably insane. But as reasons go, that mustache would have done just fine. Various wags said it made Bolton look like a walrus. Others said...

Sen. Ted Cruz, the runner-up to Donald Trump in the bruising 2016 Republican presidential primary, revealed Thursday that he wants to someday mount another White House campaign. “Look, I hope to run again,” the Texas lawmaker told The Christian Science Monitor. “We came very, very close in 2016. And it’s the most fun I’ve ever had in my life."

Ammo Grrrll waves BYE BYE, WALMART, BYE BYE. She writes: Et tu, Walmart? Seriously? Do you have no idea who your customer base is? Well, whatever. I’m done. It’s a shame, too, because Walmart is the definite Big Dog shopping emporium in our Dusty Little Village. For groceries, I have two other choices in town, one of which I have always preferred anyway: Bashas. It is a pleasant, to-scale kind of local place with good meat and produce, sun screens over parking, the most customer-friendly cashiers, and slightly higher prices on canned goods. So be it. I’m willing to pay...
