The mugshot revealed a scraped and bruised 32-year-old man named Ben Padgett. His long brown hair, beard, and penetrating eyes caused some readers to compare him to Jesus Christ. He was, in reality, just another name, another face, another Florida Man in what has become one of journalism’s darkest and most lucrative cottage industries. Florida Man was formalized as a news genre by a...

Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) has doubled down on his claim that ethical concerns about his wife’s businesses are “baseless.” As IJR previously reported, Cummings has faced ethical questions since his wife, Maya Rockeymoore, was hit with an IRS complaint after the National Legal and Policy Center — a conservative watchdog group — alleged that her non-profit and her for-profit consulting firm had overlapping operations. Rockeymoore’s consulting firm was offered a million dollar federal contract to oversee a project which she housed under her non-profit — a “self-dealing” that may be illegal under IRS regulations. Cummings chairs the House Oversight Committee...

Here is one example (transcript): [I]f we had had confidence that the president clearly did not commit a crime, we would have said so. We did not, however, make a determination as to whether the president did commit a crime.

New York University has canceled a "Reporting on the Far Right" elective undergraduate class after just two students signed up to take the course. NYU attracted headlines earlier this year after its decision to hire former New Yorker fact-checker Talia Lavin to teach the class. In June 2018, Lavin resigned from the magazine after making a false accusation against ICE agent Justin Gaertner for sporting what she believed was a Nazi tattoo, which turned out to be a 'Titan 2' symbol for former Marine veteran's platoon while serving in Afghanistan. “Canceling the class had nothing to do with Talia’s writings,...
