12:19 p.m. ET – I just ran into NRSC head John Cornyn coming off the elevator. Most Washington Republicans will tell you on background they think the Delaware Senate pick up is gone for them if Christine O'Donnell wins the GOP primary, but they are reluctant to say so on the record. Cornyn came pretty close. He said that not only does he have doubts about whether O'Donnell can win in Delaware, but he also admitted that race is the "lynchpin" to any chance of Senate Republicans taking back the majority. SNIP I then asked If O'Donnell wins, are you...

WASHINGTON – Tens of thousands of walruses have come ashore in northwest Alaska because the sea ice they normally rest on has melted. Federal scientists say this massive move to shore by walruses is unusual in the United States. But it has happened at least twice before, in 2007 and 2009. In those years Arctic sea ice also was at or near record low levels. The population of walruses stretches "for one mile or more. This is just packed shoulder-to-shoulder," U.S. Geological Survey biologist Anthony Fischbach said in a telephone interview from Alaska. He estimated their number at tens of...

The Obama administration is bracing itself for more bad news this week with the release of stunning census figures which are projected to show the biggest increase in poverty in the United States since the 1960s. As Associated Press reports: The number of people in the U.S. who are in poverty is on track for a record increase on President Barack Obama’s watch, with the ranks of working-age poor approaching 1960s levels that led to the national war on poverty. Census figures for 2009 — the recession-ravaged first year of the Democrat’s presidency — are to be released in the...

STONOR, England — For nearly three centuries after the Reformation, Catholics in England were outlaws. But in the turmoil and persecution that followed the break between King Henry VIII and Rome, noble families such as the Stonors clung to their faith, "in spite of dungeon, fire and sword," as the Victorian hymn "Faith of our Fathers" put it."We're just stubborn, really," says Ralph Thomas Campion Stonor, the seventh Lord Camoys, a title bestowed on an ancestor for valor in the Battle of Agincourt in 1415.Pope Benedict XVI will recall the years of persecution during his upcoming tour of Britain Sept. 16-19....

A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.(Proverbs 12:10) There is an old Rabbinic proverb that goes something like this;”Whoever is kind to the cruel, is actually cruel to the Kind”. The way the Proverbs of Solomon relates it, “The tender mercies of the wicked are cruel…”. The point is that the godless, do not lack mercy, it’s just that they exercise it in a way that actually hurts people. This is because their godlessness causes them to be morally skewed. The unforseen consequences of their ‘mercy’ end up amounting...

Florida's school children are getting a lesson in how the political winds affect the political backbone today. Last year, Jim Greer, then the chair of the Florida Republican Party, was happy to, as he says now, "placate the extremists who dominate" the GOP and publicly accuse President Obama of orchestrating a socialist plot by addressing the nation's public schools via video. Today, he's apologizing for ever saying any such thing, and calling members of his former party racist. It seems that after a year which say Greer get booted from the GOP and disgraced by scandal, he's had a change...

As Governor Chris Christie goes to war with the NJ teachers union, let's review what he's up against. NJEA director Vince Giordano received $421,615 in salary and $128,508 in deferred compensation last year, according to tax filings released last spring. NJEA president Barbara Keshishian earned $256,450 last year. VP Wendell Steinhauer and Secretary-Treasurer Marie Blistan were paid $170,974 each. Meanwhile, the governor earned a measly $175,000. Christie's war with the union escalated earlier this summer when a union official suggested praying for the governor's death.

A prominent Republican congressman raised the specter Friday of a government shutdown if the GOP wins control of the House. Speaking to hundreds of activists gathered at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington for the Faith and Freedom Conference, Rep. Lynn Westmoreland (R-Ga.) urged the audience to stand with House Republicans when they go toe-to-toe with President Barack Obama. Westmoreland said his caucus — presuming it takes control of the House come November — aims to pass spending bills that Obama is likely to veto. He predicted Republicans would not be able to override such a veto, creating a standoff that...

It has finally dawned on Barack Obama and his advisors that his cool, imperious, arrogant style, however effective it may have been when he was taking potshots at George W. Bush during the campaign, is a turn-off for the citizenry he is leading as president. It doesn't help that he and Michelle are so fond of living large while real unemployment is at 15 or 16 percent, and that his economic policies are making matters worse. But the fundamental problem is that his elitism, and the associated disdain for ordinary people, shows whenever he is off the carefully scripted teleprompter....

Last night the MTA said a fare hike by January is a near certainty. This will be the third fare hike since 2008, raising the monthly unlimited pass from $89 to $104. Meanwhile, the MTA continues to pass major service cuts. But what's really appalling here is how much transit workers get paid. We're republishing data from SeeThroughNY showing that 8,074 MTA employees earned $100,000 last year. Fifty MTA employees earned more than $200,000 last year. And salaries are rising.

July 10, 2008 Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said this morning that the House Judiciary Committee may hold hearings on an impeachment resolution offered by Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio). Kucinich is expected to offer a "privileged resolution" this afternoon calling on the House to look at whether President Bush should be removed from office for lying to Congress and the American public when he sought congressional approval back in 2002 for taking military action to invade Iraq and overthrow Saddam Hussein. Pelosi has said previously that impeachment "was off the table," so her comments this morning were surprising, and clearly signaled...

WASHINGTON -- The five female members of Texas Christian University's national championship rifle team were already beside themselves to be on the South Lawn of the White House on Monday evening at a celebration of all NCAA sports champions when President Barack Obama gave them the first shout-out. "We've got the sharpshooters from the TCU rifle squad. Where are they?" asked Obama as the team members, standing near the camera risers, screamed. "I think that they may be able to give the Secret Service a run for their money." Read more: http://www.star-telegram.com/2010/09/13/2465524/obama-gives-tcu-rifle-team-a-warm.html#ixzz0zWatyVcd

If you needed a reminder that Wall Street and Washington make the strangest of bedfellows, new research shows that Goldman Sachs donated more money to Republicans than Democrats for the first time in decades. The latest data from the Washington D.C.-based Center for Responsive Politics shows that Goldman has doled out roughly $914,000 to Republican candidates compared to about $776,000 to Democrats in this year's election cycle. "I think that Wall Street and other large donors have become not too much unlike the electorate at large – sort of willing to change," said Jennifer Duffy, senior editor of the Cook...

Surprises ruled the day at the National Clean Energy Summit, held September 7 in Las Vegas.
