Study Suggests Way of Predicting Climate Change 1.09 p.m. ET (1809 GMT) December 2, 1999 By Jeff Donn   Researchers have shown links between ocean currents and global temperature changes during the last ice age, a step toward understanding Earth's complicated cycle of warming and cooling. A German scientist argues that sea circulation likely exerts some control over the millennial cycle of warming and cooling. But Carsten Ruhlemann, the marine geologist who supervised the study, acknowledged that ocean currents could be an effect rather than cause of temperature shifts. "Nobody knows what causes the process. That's the major question that ...

RNC Chief: White House Plans to Break the Law RNC Chief: White House Plans to Break the Law -Nicholson: Cutting Missile Defense is 'Outrageous' and 'Unlawful' - WASHINGTON, Dec. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Republican National Committee Chairman Jim Nicholson today said the Clinton-Gore Administration is "about to break the law," and labeled "outrageous" efforts by Pentagon officials, clearly acting at the behest of the White House, to cut spending on the Navy's AEGIS missile defense system. "There are only two words to describe the Administration's efforts to slash spending on the Navy's AEGIS missile defense system," said Nicholson. "One is ...

It's bad enough that most voters don't vote. In 1998, the turnout was 36 percent, along with 1986 the lowest since 1942, when a lot of Americans were away fighting the war. But now most Americans won't even respond to opinion polls. The response in some recent polls fell as low as 20 percent, which makes you wonder what significance these surveys have. That is very serious because a lot of important decisions are based on opinion polls. On the basis of a quickie Richard Morris poll, President Clinton was said to have made the fateful - almost fatal ...

The appearance of radio-equipped, masked men in black attacking shops during the Seattle demonstration became, not surprisingly, a focus of media coverage. Journalists quickly assumed that the window-smashers represented elements of the anti-WTO protest. But while it is permissible, under corporate journalistic ground rules, to make such assumptions it is not permissible to make the equally likely assumption that these masked rioters might have been government agents or corporate thugs. There is a long history of ...

People rarely do it in front of their parents. Or with their kids in the room. And doing it in church is beyond blasphemous. Many teachers, including Jacksonville University English professor Bill Leyden, don't use or allow foul language in their classrooms. Licensed mental health counselor Jan Agers Gallagher said filling the air with curses is "almost like smoke, an environmental toxin" full of negative energy. Christy Stechman, a University of Florida student and cheerleader for the Jacksonville Jaguars, said foul language is an everyday occurrence, but it still shocks and makes people uncomfortable. So why do folks feel so ...

During or after the debate, log on to vote.com to vote for who you think was the winner. Free-trade, Free-Sex and Zero-Fun games: By Manmohan Sinha Free-Sex Analogy Evaluating Free/International trade at individual transaction level is like evaluating Free-sex at orgasm/pleasure level. What could be wrong with it when it is voluntary, fun, fulfilling and certainly not a zero-sum game when both sides gain pleasure? Yet we do not limit our evaluation of Free-sex culture to mere quality of fun and orgasms that people may experience when they engage in it. We evaluate the merit of sex based on its impact on relationships, commitments, family, child welfare, morality etc. Free Sex may not be a zero sum game ...
  • Debate Prediction: Keyes Wins, Bush and McCain Declared Winners by Media

There will be no surprises tonight. Alan Keyes will again dominate the debate. Bush and McCain will be declared the winners by the media. Keyes will again be ignored in the post-debate wrap up. The same thing, of course, happenned in the 1996 race. Pat Buchanan and Keyes dominated every debate. Bob Dole performed more poorly than Morry Taylor and yet the GOP establishment forced Dole down our throats. If some of you have not heard from Alan Keyes in a while, you might be surprised at how similar his postions are to Buchanan's on issues like the WTO, UN, ...

It is freezing cold here in New Hampshire. There are crowds of supporters for all of the candidates holding signs and lining the streets outside the debate headquarters, WMUR-TV, Manchester, New Hampshire. The candidates are in their individual pre-debate "holding rooms." These rooms have large glass windows so everyone can see inside. The really fun part is that there is a reception for dignitaries and local/state politicians outside of these rooms. It's like a zoo! I'm wondering if they're going to sell headsets, like the museums, where you can walk by, press a button and hear about the candidates! The ...

Anderson Valley Advertiser, Boonville N.CA | Jeffrey St. Clair
Seattle -- Tuesday evening, this city is under martial law. National Guard helicopters are hovering over downtown and sweeping the city with searchlights. There was a 7pm curfew flouted by thousands -- those same thousands who captured the streets, sustained clouds of tear gas, volleys of rubber bullets, concussive grenades, high-powered bean cannons and straightforward beatings with riot batons. The bravery of the street warriors had its tremendous triumph: they held the streets long enough to force the WTO to cancel their opening day. This had been the stated objective of the direct action strategists, and they attained it.At dawn ...

Enemy of the Week Mean Streets of Seattle Looks like some of those anti-trade terrorists in Seattle drank a little too much of the city's famed imported coffee Tuesday morning. Or maybe they were relying on stronger substances imported from Colombia via Mexico. Let's hope the local police weren't making too much of a concession when they decided to go with domestically produced tear gas to disperse these loony goons. Still, it's the dream of every anti-WTO hysteric to be attacked by chemicals wholly owned and wholly produced by American labor. That's why their favorite bathing spot remains the ...

From my knowledge of protests that i have participated in, including FReeping Algore here in Raleigh I have a question regarding WTO protests. Did the protestors bother to obtain their permits to protest on public property? I know in most cities you need a permit. Not that i agree with this, which i dont, but just wondering if they followed the law or if they are just doing as they damn well please. Now dont flame me for this...im just having a little fun!

Collateral Damage in Seattle Report from Portland student Jim Desyllas (posted 12-2-99) Called-in from a pay phone outside Seattle. Wed., 7:30 pm Pacific time. I just spent 4 days in Seattle. The "information" people are getting from the mass media is false. This was not, as Pres. Clinton claims, a peaceful protest marred by the actions of violent protesters. This was a massive, strong but peaceful demonstration which was attacked repeatedly by the police with the express purpose of provoking a violent response to provide photo opportunities for the Western media. I know because I watched it happening. I'll tell ...

Businesses throughout the downtown core, many with windows still shuttered with plywood, struggled yesterday to recover from an estimated $1.5 million in damage, the worst vandalism in decades, according to the Downtown Seattle Merchants Association. And the absence of shoppers, already estimated at $7 million in losses yesterday, was piling up at a rate as high as $2.5 million a day in what is supposed to be the best time of the year for retailers. Frustration, too, was piling up. "The police did nothing," the owner of Swissa Jewelers said yesterday, as she surveyed neighboring businesses with boarded-up windows. ...

Police Silence WTO Protesters, For Now December 2, 1999 Web posted at: 2:05 p.m. EST (1905 GMT) SEATTLE (CNN) -- For a second straight day, police deployed across a 46-block "no protest" zone on Thursday, successfully keeping activists away from a meeting of the World Trade Organization. Protest organizers challenged the legality of a curfew and said demonstrators would continue to make their presence known. The area of downtown Seattle surrounding the WTO conference is under an around-the-clock curfew until midnight Friday as authorities move to prevent more violence and disruptions. Outside the curfew area, in an overnight confrontation in ...

The World Trade Organization's talks are scheduled to be held in free trade-friendly Seattle this fall. So is "the Protest of the Century," as WTO opponents gather to give the ruling class a kick in the groin. On a cool but soon to be warm, sunny, and perfectly serviceable midsummer Saturday morning, when you'd think otherwise rational people would have something midsummerlike to do, some 120 organizers filed into the Labor Temple in Belltown. They came to hear the true believers fire them up over global trade issues. They also came to prepare for days, months from now, when ...

FReepers, >The next best thing to going to Seattle was my own WTO protest at Wal-Mart today. Politely, I asked WM manager in Rock Falls Illinois if I could campaign outside his store. He gruffly told me it was against WM policy. I asked him about WM's complicty in pushing Bill Clinton to POTUS and it's policy about illegal campaign contributions. Well, we left without trouble and decided to get breakfast at a nearby McDonald's. As we went through the line, I shook hands with the manager. He invited us to campaign at his restuarant all we liked. He said ...
