It's hard enough to get out of bed in the morning before a long day at the office. So imagine what it's been like to be Hillary Rodham Clinton, who gets up each morning wondering what to be at the office: If it's a foreign trip, for instance, Mrs. Clinton is the first lady (as in: When Suha Arafat accuses the Israelis of using poisonous gas against the Palestinians, the first lady sits silently, then diplomatically plants a cool air-kiss on Arafat's cheek after the speech). On the other hand, if it's a matter of, say, Puerto Rican terrorists, Mrs. ...

A coalition of education and mental-health organizations is mailing out a new booklet that it says will help teachers and administrators create a safer school environment for gay and lesbian students. The booklet takes direct aim at therapy- and religion-based programs that seek to change individuals' homosexual orientation. The 12-page booklet, "Just the Facts About Sexual Orientation and Youth: A Primer for Principals, Educators, and School Personnel," was mailed last week to superintendents in the nation's nearly 15,000 public school districts. It outlines the "factual and scientific information" on homosexuality endorsed by major health organizations, including the American Academy of ...

For education and discussion only. Not for commercial use. JOHNSTON, Iowa (AP)-- Against the backdrop of violent protests at international trade talks, Republican presidential front-runner George W. Bush stood firm for free trade on Wednesday and questioned whether Vice President Al Gore has the backbone to do the same. Gore, a supporter of world trade, is at odds over the matter with the same labor unions whose help he needs in his fight for the Democratic nomination. ``I'm not sure what (Gore's) positions are,'' Bush said. ``It will be interesting to see how he reacts to pressure of the ...

A confidential Justice Department report on the mysterious 1995 death of a federal inmate concludes the FBI's Oklahoma City field office mishandled physical evidence and recommends that four Justice Department employees be prosecuted for lying, a small Arkansas newspaper reported. The report on Kenneth Michael Trentadue's death, prepared by the Justice Department's inspector general's office, allegedly contains grand jury material and is considered so confidential the local FBI office was denied a copy. Nevertheless, the Arkansas Chronicle, a small Arkansas publication that caters to that state's Latino community, reports it got a copy Nov. 19. The Chronicle contends the report ...

Tiananmen Square, Seattle The police-chief spoke of the "terror" the people of Seattle witnessed take-over their city. Was he a police-chief (he wore a police uniform) - or a political appointee? Behind him as he spoke, a huge 25 foot by 15 foot cardboard banner - the banner of an American Flag with the UN-blue endowed hallmark of the WTO plastered like graffiti over the face of the red, white and blue. I thought to myself as the police-chief spoke of suppressing the "terror", boy, there is little doubt who he is the spokesman for - he's got his hallmark ...

I just heard on a local news broadcast, of a four year old narcotics detector dog (German Shepherd) in Santa Fe, NM, who died when he detected and bit into a bag containing meth. A quick search of Santa Fe news police notes didn't turn up anything in regards to this incident, but I felt that anyone who has ever had the honor and privilege of working with a military or police working dog would help give an appropriate Freeper tribute to Max, the dog named in the report, and just the latest law enforcer to become a victim in ...

Report: Chinese leader secretly visited Israeli weapons JERUSALEM (AP) - A top Chinese official secretly visited the Israeli company that is outfitting a Chinese plane with an advanced airborne early warning system, despite U.S. demands that the deal be scrapped, a newspaper said Wednesday. Israel announced in November that it is selling the AWACS system to China for $250 million. China denied the sale. The system allows aircraft to conduct long-range radar surveillance and coordinate forces during battle. The Israeli Defense Ministry on Wednesday refused comment on the report in the Haaretz daily that the Chinese official, Li Peng, visited ...

A daily report from the World Trade Organization summit, Seattle by LBO editor Doug Henwood Tuesday, November 30 Back in the late 1980s, the World Bank and IMF held one of their annual meetings in Germany (two out of every three years they're held in Washington, but in the third the conventioneers visit the hinterlands). The bankers were met by spirited riots. The next year in Washington, about 10 people held a demo in the back of the Washington Sheraton, annual meeting HQ, and were promptly arrested with no press attention aside from LBO, which means no press attention. I ...

This post updates a previous thread at click here for previous thread Castro Coverup in Progress?I have contact three Congressional offices who are calling for Castro's detention and they had not seen the Vancouver Sun report. They will investigate the matter. Vancouver and Seattle Freepers: be on the lookout for Air Cubana airliners. They must have decided to fly it to Vancouver because it would be suspicious sitting on the tarmac in Seattle next to AF-1.

Who’s afraid of Y2K? That’s how U.S. executives seem to feel in the latest Investor’s Business Daily/TIPP Business Leaders’ Poll as the countdown to Jan. 1, 2000, enters its final month today. Top execs see consumer behavior as their biggest Y2K-related worry for the economy. But even that concern is mild. Only 16% responded that the buying public could cause disruptions in the economy to a "high" degree. Overall, the survey found, chief executives and chief financial officers of some of the fastest-growing U.S. companies feel well prepared for the Y2K changeover. While nearly all respondents expect some glitches, overall ...

The Associated Press reports that the recent war of words between James "the ragin' Cajun" Carville and Sidney " the street-fighter" Blumenthal escalated into physical violence when Carville body-slammed Blumenthal down a flight of stairs at the White House. Although the two were never particlularly close, the recent separation and pending divorce action between President Bill Clinton and first-lady Hillary Rodham, has brought old wounds to the surface. On December 14, 1999, just one month ago, Ms. Rodham announced at a hastily-convened press conference that the National Enquirer Article regarding her divorce demand from President Clinton was indeed accurate. Since ...

SEATTLE (AP) — Undeterred by violent demonstrations, President Clinton wades into the fray over global trade today, saying the World Trade Organization should heed the legitimate complaints of many protesters. Police, dressed head to toe in black, lined the streets outside Clinton's hotel this morning as two groups of chanting marchers passed by. Across the street from the hotel, someone pasted the message "UNION YES'' in the 12th-floor windows of an office building. White House officials blamed a small number of activists for a riotous day Tuesday that provoked state authorities to call out unarmed National Guardsmen. They promised that ...

It is now being widely reported that it is illegal to wear or own gas masks in Seattle, via instant decree of the Mayor. Questions for the Mayor and Police Chief of Seattle: What is the penalty for violating this instant law? Is there a grace period for turning in gas masks? Where is the correct place to turn them in? What is the penalty for owning a gas mask? Will compensation be given for these instantly illegal gas masks which are confiscated or turned in?What gives the police and/or mayor the right to create new laws? Are these laws ...

Just heard a report on APB police scanner that a group dressed in black police riot gear, carrying some sort of "launchers" was seen leaving a white van and entering a psychedelic painted van. There was also mention of FBI agents (not the same report) and of one being injured with a broken hand. The psychedelic van was found parked & empty. It sounds like the protesters are moving again.

Candidates on the Issues By CALVIN WOODWARD Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON (AP) - In the gathering tempest of the 2000 presidential campaign, candidates are building their policy positions brick by brick. Some are further along than others. There is a health care plan missing here, a tax-cut package absent there. But they will keep on swiftly building, as long as they can ride out the storm. Here, on a variety of issues, are positions of the major candidates: for the Democratic nomination, former New Jersey Sen. Bill Bradley and Vice President Al Gore; for the Republicans, activist Gary Bauer, Texas ...

LONDON (Reuters) - The International Energy Agency (IEA) has drawn up plans to provide emergency oil supply and introduce rationing if the Y2K computer bug plays havoc with global energy flows, a spokesman for the West's supply watchdog said Tuesday. The plan, to go for approval before the Paris-based group's board of governors on December 10, would kick in if computer failures feared at the dawn of the new century slash seven percent or more from industrial countries' oil supplies. "In the documents setting up the IEA the director is given the right to apply crisis mechanisms when there is ...

MEDIUM RARE by Jim Rarey December 1, 1999 PROVOCATEUR – MIA Has the word “provocateur” been dropped from the English language? In order to start this piece with the dictionary definition of the word, the writer’s 1995 edition of Webster’s New World Dictionary and Thesaurus was taken from the shelf and searched…in vain. The word was not there. Come to think of it, I don’t remember hearing the word used in news reports for at least the last ten years. Well, what is a provocateur? A “provocateur” is a person who commits a certain act to obtain a desired reaction. ...
