Fellow Concerned Conservatives: Unity 2000 – an organization of Bauer, Buchanan, Keyes, and Smith supporters – has been working behind the scenes to create unity among conservatives for the 2000 primaries. General talk of unification has been heard over the past week or so, with Alan Keyes expressing his interest in joining forces with Buchanan, Bob Smith declaring his belief that conservatives must be united behind one leader, etc. We have put forth the following plan for unity: (1) Each candidate will work in the early primaries to show that he is the conservative leader. (2) At the end of ...

For education and discussion only. Not for commercial use. TRENARY, Mich. -- Wolves are continuing their comeback in the Upper Peninsula. At least 174 wolves in 30 packs were counted this winter, up from 140 wolves in 1998, the Department of Natural Resources said Friday. The wolf census is conducted by biologists on snowmobiles or snowshoes and from aerial observations of radio-collared wolves during the winter. "This represents a minimum count of wolves," said Jim Hammill, DNR wildlife management unit supervisor. "Since wolves can travel 30- to 50-miles a day, we don't include all tracks to eliminate as much duplicate ...

Anyone see Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) on MSNBC's Watch It yesterday? During the course of her interview, the distinguished Senator said: "I have to tell you. I'm very disturbed." Big of you to admit it, Babs, but we sorta suspected that all along. http://www.michaelmbates.com/

For education and discussion only. Not for commercial use. Under the guise of curtailing "frivolous lawsuits," the state Senate is making a serious effort to make it awfully expensive for people to sue when something has gone wrong. The Senate Judiciary Committee is refining the language for the so-called loser pay bill, an overly punitive piece of legislation that's expected to be taken up this fall. It would make anyone who sues and loses a civil lawsuit pay the attorney fees and expenses of the defendant. The bill is nothing more than piling on. Michigan judges already have the power ...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BELGRADE - Three days after NATO troops refused a mother superior's pleas for protection, Kosovar rebels looted her monastery and raped a young nun, officials said yesterday. French commandos and members of the French Foreign Legion arrived as the Kosovar Liberation Army guerrillas were leaving the isolated mountain religious community in Devic, about 30 miles northwest of the Kosovo capital of Pristina. The Post reported Monday how Mother Macaria drove to Pristina on Sunday to plead with arriving British troops for protection for herself, a priest and nine nuns at Devic. "Please come and save us. You have the ...

For education and discussion only. Not for commercial use. DILI, Indonesia (AP) - The scheduled arrival today of the first U.N. police advisers to East Timor, due to keep the peace for an Aug. 8 independence referendum, has been delayed for several days. David Wimhurst, spokesman for the U.N. Assistance Mission in East Timor (UNAMET), said he was informed late Friday that the 38 advisers would not fly in from Darwin, Australia, until early next week. The delay was believed to have been caused by pilot scheduling difficulties, he said. Overall, 278 U.N. officers are to oversee the Indonesian ...

Campground moves to evict family for their stance on gay rights 6.24 a.m. ET (1024 GMT) June 19, 1999 By Evelyne Girardet, Associated Press CHICAGO (AP) — The Graham family believes strongly in the Methodist Church and civil rights, including the rights of gays and lesbians to live free of discrimination. Their beliefs have earned them an eviction notice from a cottage they have at a Methodist campground in suburban Chicago. The notice came after Bill and Nannette Graham's 16-year-old daughter, Amelia, posted signs in the cottage's windows supporting gay friends the Chicago family claims were being discriminated against ...

Websters collegiate dictionary, circa 1957,gives as the root of the word hysteria, the Greek word hysterikos, the Latin word hystericus, and the French word hystera. All of these words mean womb or uterus. The word itself means wildly emotional. The Greeks in their primitive wisdom recognized that women could become wildly emotional critters. And they further knew that this condition was somehow connected to their reproductive organs. Now that my wife of 25 years is going through menopause,I understand clearly, almost as an epiphany, what the Greeks knew about women.Further as I watched these middle aged women legislators crowding their way to the podium and hysterically screaming for gun control,I ...

FORT WORTH -- The long and largely luckless campaign to win reparations for descendants of American slaves has a few radicals who vow to win redress "by any means necessary." Willie Foster took a more moderate approach. He simply filled out an IRS form, requested a $43,209 "black tax" credit and got a check from the U.S. Treasury in the mail. "It's about time they gave us something for that lost time in slavery," said Foster, 35, a part- time minister from Fort Worth who said his great- grandparents were slaves. Trouble is, there is no black tax credit, ...

Gun-Rights Groups Win With Money And Members By Thomas Ferraro WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Gun-rights groups, which defeated gun-control advocates on Capitol Hill Friday, contributed 15 times more than them in the last election, federal records reviewed by a public interest group show. Records also showed gun-rights activists, led by the National Rifle Association, shelled out 20 times more than gun-control forces in lobbying Congress and the White House the past two years. The House Friday bucked public opinion and refused to go along with a Senate-passed bill that would require background checks for sales at gun shows. The Senate bill ...

EDUCATION: Irvine and five other UC campuses vote to unionize. Contract negotiations begin this summer. IRVINE — University of California, Irvine, graduate students — who work as teaching assistants, tutors and readers — have voted to unionize along with five other UC campuses, according to election results announced Thursday. The elections ended a 16-year campaign for bargaining rights that included a weeklong strike in December that disrupted finals on many campuses. At UCI, 353 graduate-student workers voted in favor of the union, with 225 voting no. Results for the last two UC campuses, Santa Barbara and Riverside, will be ...

Media Briefings By Amy Burg June 12, 1999-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pick the Log Out of Your Own Eye First, Peter From the Columbine High School tragedy in Littleton, CO, to now, media members and politicians have created an infinite web of outstretched arms pointing fingers of blame in every direction. From violent video games, graphic television, and sadistic music, to irresponsible parents, and all-too-lenient gun dealers, everything seems to have been cornered as the core of the problem. Now, a new fish has been thrown into the never-ending sea of wrongdoing surrounding the entire tragedy. Peter Jennings innocently informed viewers on April ...

With our nation and its people having been ravaged by a widespread abandonment of moral values -- and, indeed, by concerted attacks against moral values -- many Americans believe this is a time for our people to reassert standards they believe would constructively influence our people and our society for good. In response to that view, the United States House of Representatives has passed permissive -- not imperative -- legislation, simply to allow, not require, the posting of the Ten Commandments in school classrooms and other public buildings and places. The House bill was approved by a vote of ...

WASHINGTON (AP) — They speak of frazzled parents stuck in rush-hour traffic, grandparents shunted off to the old folks home, children adrift in an amoral sea. Politicians of both parties are in full cry about the state of the family. ``Polls show that a majority of Americans think that getting kids off to the right start should be our No. 1 national priority,'' said Democrat Bill Bradley, who like almost everyone else running for president has raised family values forcefully. ``Politicians like to talk about children,'' he says. ``Just throw in a mention of children and you get an applause ...

First of all, the improvements made over the past weeks to the "Free Republic" are fabulous! However, I have one gripe...opening a "new window" to read an article doesn't seem to offer any benefits or convenience. While some people may like the new function, others may be having difficulty depending on their computer/browser...It may even confuse novice users. Is it too bold for me to suggest that we petition Jim to create a "preferences" option to allow us to choose our format? Before we were forced to open a new window, we could always right-mouse click and open a ...

Vice President Al Gore interrupted a question-and-answer session with high school students on Friday to embrace a lesbian teen who broke into tears as she described verbal abuse hurled at her by former classmates. A crowd of several hundred students at Fairfax High School in Los Angeles broke into applause as Gore, two days after he announced his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination, crossed a gymnasium to embrace sobbing senior Jessie Funes. Funes, 17, had been describing the taunts she endured at another school because she is a lesbian and started crying as she told Gore her belief ...
