The Neverending Story
An ongoing debate on Scripture, Tradition, History and Interpretation.

Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue. - John Adams

As one of neither do you find it as ironic as I do that the Calvinists who believe in predestination and nothing they do will make a difference are giving him hell whereas a lot of the rest of the us who believe in free will seem to feel that we have done all we can and that God's will, will be done?

It is not ironical to me that the Calvinists would be quick to rebuke II for his decision. However, it does seem strange to me that those who hold that we have an unlimited Free Will have so easily given II up to his fate.

Didn't expect that from you :'( I can only speak for myself. What else to do but pray for him? I don't call that giving up. To me prayer should be the first resort and not the last Anyway in the bible isn't there a point where even God gives up?

By all means, please explain to me how the Babylonian Talmud entry in Gittin 56b-57a isn't offensive.

Changing the subject, I see.

For the record, there is a lot of smoke and little or no fire concerning so-called references to "Jesus" in the Talmud. "Yeshu" was a common name, and there are a number of "Yeshus" mentioned in the Talmud. None of them fit the timeframe or story of Jesus of Nazareth. Likewise, "Balaam" is a common figure in the writings of the sages. There is no reason to believe that passages which mention Balaam have anything to do with Jesus. This is, at any rate, the opinion of top contemporary scholars of the Talmud.

So, were you always a Calvinist? Or did you convert to your present beliefs?

You're right. Why bash Steven when he "obviously" is not one of "the Elect". Since God "clearly" "predestined" him for hell, who are they to challenge God's will?

Since they cannot expect their words to change anything, the only other reason I can think of is they do it just for the sport of it.

Oh and congrats on the house

Thanks! :o)

Oh and the Christmas tree coming down:')

You mean you're not going to hang Easter decorations on it? ;o)

And I thought this thread almost dead :') The Calvinists have revived it)

Actually, credit for "reviving it" ought to go to Iggy and his latest religious conversion.

I suggest Iggy and JR get together, and quietly arrange for the next "Iggy conversion" to take place during the next FReepathon, like this one has. After all, each of the previous ones were good for at least a thousand posts each. JR could use the extra site traffic for fund-raising purposes.

How about a FR Conversion-athon. Someone could agree to convert to the religion raising the most bucks!

Who has given him up to his fate?

I was commenting on CD's post:

...whereas a lot of the rest of the us who believe in free will seem to feel that we have done all we can and that God's will, will be done?

It sounds like she feels that some have just quietly let II go.

Found a loophole in that plan already. If the stooge converted to something like Unitarian-Universalist, JR'd be up a creek at the next FReepathon. Given the U-U's all-inclusive belief system, there'd be nothing left to convert to at the next FReepathon.

Well, except maybe nihilism - and JR doesn't want to switch us to a Nihilist Forum, because there'd never be any posts in it.

"Michael A. Koehler, age unavailable, was listed in critical condition Sunday night at UPMC Presbyterian hospital"

Good thing he found his way into a Presbyterian Hospital, then. Given the fact that a beer keg caused his injuries, I mean.

I think they got the idea from CindyDawg's #1739 where she said,

"...whereas a lot of the rest of the us who believe in free will seem to feel that we have done all we can and that God's will, will be done?"

I think KSEN saying I have. I said I would continue to pray for him but what else to do? He considers that giving up I guess. Why do Calvists care anyway if it is already been decided? That's the confusing part to me.
