Its not unusual in a third world city for every public building, every apartment building, and many private homes to have diesel generators that start automatically. Where I lived we had power failures all the time, and the only way you knew about it was if you saw the little cap over the exhaust pipe lift. That, and the traffic lights would go dead.

In the US hospitals and some industries do this, but it hasn't been common for ordinary businesses and residences to provide for their own power. But I think people should start thinking in terms of taking themselves off the grid, or at least supplementing the grid. Why should your business go down just because the power company can't get its act together?

I also USED to carry a small pocket knife, but that had to go, too. My money clip had a small pair of scissors that folded into it, that had to go, too. My key "fob" was a steel ring 4" in diameter (allowed the keys to be an effective weapon when the ring was held the fingers of one hand and the keys swung, it also meant that I could put my keys on my wrist quickly thus giving me free hands for my children), that, too, is now gone. As a woman and mother I carried these for protection and personal comfort. Now, when I travel I can't easily handle any of the common emergencies because all my gear is considered too dangerous.

Weather gal on WNBC -- no storms at all in the Niagara Falls area. Reporter says Canadians saying now it started at a nuclear plant in PA.

Bush should have cancelled that fund raiser immediately, and gone to a microphone every 30 minutes with Ridge to give an "update". Its all fluff, but that would have silenced the critics, and forced the networks to cover it instead of a Hillary phon-a-thon on every channel.

The moon rises over the Upper West side of Manhattan, with a passing boat seen in the foreground, as seen from Weehawken, N.J. Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003. A sudden blackout robbed electricity from millions of people across a vast swath of the northern United States and southern Canada on Thursday, exposing them to stifling heat and jammed rush hour streets, and then darkness. New Yorkers escaped silenced subways, and nuclear power plants in four states shut down. (AP Photo/George Widman)

I was just reading an Ontario newspaper article that said their Defense Minister "pointed a finger at a fire at a Pennsylvania nuclear plant" as the cause.

I hadn't heard this "theory". Not Pennsylvania anyway.

Granholm (Mich. gov.) said that the water is pressurized thru the pipes electrically, and consequently, no power = no water.

I should have plugged the VCR into the power cord. The local news reporters are a laugh a minute right now. Having a 4-way explained by someone requiring assistance to apply make-up is priceless.

Shrillery would blame the president for her hemmorhoids,or her yeast infections. We all remember Bill Richardson's monica and the los alamos huge fire, and nuclear secret thefts fiasco's. They are all anti-american pond scums. If Richardson is on the tv at suppertime, I lose my appetite, his face must have had thousands of zits to look that much like a relief map.

Three Mile Island? Oh man, that's all we need, if some nuclear plant scram triggered this, the Dems are going to go crazy. Maybe that's why Hillary has hit all the talk shows tonight, maybe she knows the real cause.
