http://members.bellatlantic.net/~tdsarric/phillytk.html PHILLY TAWK
By Clark DeLeon (Columnist and bona fide native Philadelphian.)
Philadelphia is a city of proud and distinct neighborhoods, and the people who grew up in these neighborhoods often speak in a proud and unique manner. It's more than an accent, it's an attitude, or as we pronounce it, addytood. This is the way we tawk in Fluffya, you got a problem with that. Here are certain words you can master so if you ever find yourself in Philly, you can speak the native tongue:
SKOOKILL - an expressway and a river.
SENDA CIDDY - where the expressway takes you.
WOODER - the liquid stuff flowing in the river.
GAZZ - the liquid stuff that keeps taxi cabs going.
KWAWFEE - the liquid stuff that keeps cab drivers going.
ACKROST - from hereto there. Your destination could be ackrost town.
WINDAS - the roll down glass things in the car.
PURDY - the view of the Senda Ciddy skyline out the windas.
BEEYOUDEEFUL - the view of the skyline at night.
PIXTURE - the view of the skyline that comes out of a camera.
LANNICK CIDDY - the place ackrost in Jersey where you can gamble.
DOWNASHORE - where Lannick Ciddy is.
SHTREETS - what cars drive on in Senda Ciddy.
PAYMENTS - what people walk on in Senda Ciddy.
FIFF - a numbered street located between Forf and Sixt.
YO - what Fluffyans shout to friends ackrost the street.
YO, HON - what Fluffyans shout to friends of the opposite sex.
YOUSE - second person singular.
YIZ - second person plural.
YIZZLE - a contraction, as in "YIZZLE have fun in Fluffya."
WIDGES - a contraction, as in YIZZLE have even more fun if a Fluffyan goes widges to show you around town.
INNERESTIN - what many of the museums are.
LYBERRY - place where you can read upon other innerestin stuff.
BUDDER - stuff you spread on top of bread.
TAHMAYDAHS - slices that go on top of hoagies.
ACKAME - big store where you can buy budder and tahmaydahs.
NAYDIVS - people who grew up in Fluffya.
TELLUM - what you'll do when you see friends, tellum about the way we tawk.

Like wash is pronounced waRsh
LOL Must be the Pennsylvania Dutch/Deutsch influence of something 'cause my mom grew up here on the west coast of Ohio and she pronounces it similar to that: more like WARsh or wORsh.
Fish = fEEsh; dirty plates go in the dEEshwORshur.
We make fun of her so much about it she won't even say those words anymore if she can remember. Says something like, "I'm going to carry these dirty things and put them in that thing over there." ;)
Says "you'uns" a lot, too. (For years, I wondered if "dubious" was a real word because mom used it, but don't tell her I said that!)

I was HS newsletter editor (in the days before spell check) and I described something as "thilthy" because that's how I'd always heard "filthy" pronounced.
The weirdest pronunciations I've heard around here though was when, in the early '70s and living in Lima, OH, I heard several guys (who'd all gone to the same HS during the same era) say "blurrow" for "bureau." There were several other words unique to them, too, but I'm blocking on them now. But, I'd always wondered if they'd had a teacher with a speech defect. (My French teacher had one, btw; thank goodness I've never had to rely on any conversation French.) ;)

When my oldest first started school and had spelling tests, the teacher said we (parents) should help them by pronouncing the words and teach them that way
Well, my daughter was having such a hard time and wasn't doing very well passing the tests ..
Luckily, I've had folks make fun of the way I speak, because I realized that was what her problem was .. how I were saying the words where not even close to how they were spelled
Now, I have her just memorized the spelling of words and thankfully I can say .. she is a better speller then her mother .. *L*

My spelling didn't improve until I really worked on it later. (I missed 13 out of 25 spelling words on an employment test I took for a college job. Thank goodness my SATs had been multiple choice!)
FYI to those of you to whom I'd mentioned yesterday that the farmer was finally able to get in and start harvesting the amber waves of grain in the field outside my kitchen window: My daughter just called. She's driving to work and said, because of the sporadic harvesting going on, a phrase had popped into her mind, "but amber clumps of grain just doesn't sound as poetic."
