Well, if I were an "on-the-fence" Jewish voter reading some of the comments on this thread, I wouldn't be in much of a hurry to make the switch. :-) But for the good of the country, I do hope they make the switch. Maybe then [not holding breath] the Democratic leadership will wake up and change their destructive habits.
The Zogby poll said that 59% of Jews under the age of 30 voted for Bush.
While I don't know the exact percentage, most of the Orthodox Jews I know vote Republican (and this is mostly Gen-Xers, but also people in their 40's.)
In the late NY Senate election, most Chasidic groups voted for Lazio (the Squarers a notable exception.)
Some people want to complain about Jewish voters no matter what. You complain that they vote Democrat when the Dems sell Israel down the river. Then you complain that they vote Republican, because the Republicans are pro-Israel. Make up your mind.
I have family members that are jews, voting conservative and or republican to them is worse than death. However, if it looked like Israel might be engulfed by the Arabs, they would be first in line to demand Bush rush troops to the ME.
There are some things they will not do, one is they will not leave their socialist friends.
Swallowing vapid slogans like "War doesn't solve anything" (go tell that to the Spartans -- oh, right, they're gone) makes them HATE the person who drag them in.
I would not call them Isolationist, rather Absolute Pacifist. Which makes peacekeeping for them the holiest of uses for the military. And look how conflict-avoiding the Rules of Engagement were in Bosnia or even Somalia. Jimmy Carter's biggest fear in the Iranian hostage-rescue mission was to avoid all risk, which is part of why the micro-managed mission failed.
This (the article) is KOOKY! This has to be a complete misread of the support and the reasons behind it.
Either the Jewish community has not been paying attention to Bush policy (and that goes back to Bush Sr too), OR the American Jewish community is itself tolerant or supportive of the idea of a Palestinian state.
Since under the Bush administration America has officially endorsed a Palestinian homeland (even with caveats) America and Israel are on an inevitable collision course. I'm surprised so few see it.
Surely you don't mean 100% of all Israel, do you?
Giving the Palestinians a homeland is not going to solve the problem. It's known what the objective of the Palestinians (and most Muslims in the area) is -- to drive the Jews OUT.
Israel will have to act. Having gone on record as "officially" endorsing a Palestinian homeland, America will have a stake in it, and as self-appointed world's policeman, will directly insinuate itself into the situation. Against Israel.
It's just following a + b + c. Connecting the dots.
Don't walk to go see Jackie Mason live, run! He's simply the best comedian I've ever seen. But if you have any friends or family members that worship at the altar of political correctness, do not bring them to the show under any circumstances.
You were speaking of the Bush administration; I was speaking of the Israeli government.
I'm well aware of what the Palestinian intent is. I'm also aware that Israel has offered up land and a Palestinian state in "peace" talks. So I simply don't see the collision course you mentioned.
