Local police encountered attempted-assassin Thomas Crooks just moments before he tried to kill former president Donald Trump — but failed to stop the gunman despite the clear threat, according to a report.
After rallygoers spotted Crooks on the roof of a manufacturing plant just 130 yards from the stage where Trump was speaking just after 6 p.m. Tuesday, police were notified and one officer climbed a ladder to investigate, law enforcement officials said on the condition of anonymity.
There the officer encountered Crooks, who pointed his AR-style rifle at them.
The officer then backed down the ladder, and Crooks immediately took aim and loosed eight shots at the former president – grazing him in the ear, killing one bystander in the rally crowd, and gravely wounding two others.

Just spitballing here. Could the ladder used by thecop have been on the other side of the building, away from the eyewitness?
Also, it’s possible the cop froze, not from fear but from confusion. Who is that guy? A Secret Service guy in civvies for some reason?
After all, it’s not normal for a cop to expect to come in contact with an assassin, especially if it’s a local cop.
Not excusing the cop (if there was one). Just thinking out loud.
How do we know what information the responding officer was given? All we’ve go to go on at this point is this typo filled and semiliterate media report.
Police are under no obligation to protect anyone.
They are obliged to accurately document the subsequent crime.

100% correct. I just had a fellow devil dog walk away from the LAPD as a Sargent with 25 years in to move to a different state and join the force elsewhere to ride through retirement. Why? Because they are hated by City officials and the public they defend. Sad
Correct. The average cop only finds his courage after he’s got the black guy down and handcuffed, and he can kneel on his throat in perfect safety. Prior to that, not so much.

It’s funny, you and I watched the same thing and conclude exactly the opposite. Namely, Trumps talking, grabs his ear and goes down. By my count, around 4-6 SS officers were on top of him while someone’s rifles were still firing. They were on him in less than 2 seconds. Nevermind the assasin or SS officers or both were still firing hot lead, these SS guys and a SS gal jumped between the gunfire and Trump.
I personally think DEI has destroyed the SS and our military and I don’t think women should ever be expected to engage in a gunfight but these guys jumped on Trump while the lead was still flying and they should be commended not criticized.

I’m no expert. But it seems to me that part of the problem is that many police forces are in a death spiral. Can’t get good help. And the bad help makes things worse.
I recently watched a YouTube video where a newsman was interviewing three NYPD cops, an older lieutenant and two young officers. The lieutenant sounded like he had his act together. But both of the young officers sounded like they were mentally challenged (I’m not exaggerating here).
And worse, the two young officers definitely had ego problems.

Seems there’s been a spat of “Barney Fife’s” not doing their job. The Palm Beach cop that refused to enter and stop the kid shooting up the school and the South Texas sheriff department’s entire “SWAT” team that waited for a key as another school shooter went on a rampage.
My trust in local LEO is taking a dip....
Oh, brother, I FULLY understand, and concur, I was simply pointing out the drawbacks of such an attempt. If I had seen that dastardly on the roof, being likely unarmed in the area of POTUS, I’d have found the ugliest, heaviest rock I could and brained the POS.

He said the policeman climbed the side of the building (No Ladder) and was holding on from the roof and he just fell down to the ground after the perp aimed at him. He made no mention of a ladder and clearly said the cop climbed the side of the building.

You’re spot on regarding those Secret Service agents around Trump. They did exactly what they were trained to do. They acted professionally, and perhaps even heroically.
I will not even fault the female agent in front of Trump. She put herself in the line of fire. It’s not her fault that she was too small to completely cover Trump. It is the fault of the idiot who gave her that assignment.
I suppose it’s like most corrupt and dysfunctional organizations. Folks at the top are fools, and worse. But most folks at the bottom are usually just trying to do the best they can.

All: The cop couldn’t shoot him because he was holding on to the roof with both hands, then he let go and dropped to the ground.
