As Democrats make their case to voters around the country this fall, one challenge is that some of the bluest parts of the country — cities on the West Coast — are a mess.
Centrist voters can reasonably ask: Why put liberals in charge nationally when the places where they have greatest control are plagued by homelessness, crime and dysfunction?
I’ll try to answer that question in a moment, but liberals like me do need to face the painful fact that something has gone badly wrong where we’re in charge, from San Diego to Seattle.
...the truth is that too often we offer a version of progressivism that doesn’t result in progress. ...Democratic states enjoy a life expectancy two years longer than Republican states. Per capita G.D.P. in Democratic states is 29 percent higher than in G.O.P. states, and child poverty is lower. Education is generally better in blue states, with more kids graduating from high school and college. The gulf in well-being between blue states and red states is growing wider, not narrower.
So my rejoinder to Republican critiques is: Yes, governance is flawed in some blue parts of America, but overall, liberal places have enjoyed faster economic growth and higher living standards than conservative places. That doesn’t look like failure.
So the problem isn’t with liberalism. It’s with West Coast liberalism.
...the West Coast’s central problem is not so much that it’s unserious as that it’s infected with an ideological purity that is focused more on intentions than on oversight and outcomes.
...Maybe a healthy Republican Party keeps the Democratic Party healthy, and vice versa.
Without opposition party oversight, problems aren’t always fixed expeditiously.

One thing can change all of this and it is so simple it is borderline ridiculous.
The change is forcing the networks and news organizations to do their job. They are the oversight of the government, given that privilege in the First Amendment. If they cannot report the truth, then they shouldn’t be protected by the First Amendment. A Fairness Doctrine if you will which is truly fair and a media which represents the people and not the government. If the media wants to be partisans, then they need to preface every article, TV show and other forums with their political views saying it is commentary.
Exactly. Liberals cherry pick disputable stats to make it seem progressive governance works. For instance LA school achievement stats are dismal. The progressive charade is collapsed by crime.
Has this sniveling wanker at the NYT's been to NYC lately? If absolutely looks like failure.
I don't believe a word about BLUE STATES being HEALTHIER, WEALTHIER and WISER than RED STATES!
MOST STATES ARE RED with DEEP BLUE ROTTEN CITIES!
I only read a little farther than this paragraph since it wasn't followed immediately with, “oh, who am I kidding?”
Newbie.......REALLY???? Are you a NEW TROLL??
If they can’t answer the question then they’re the complete incompetent idiots and if they can answer they’re complete incompetent idiots.
I’ve said it numerous times, liberalism is a disease that infects the mind and removes all rational thought.
This sentence jumped out at me, “ Education is generally better in blue states, with more kids graduating from high school and college.”
Almost every student in blue states graduates from high school and then from college if they elect to attend. That’s because they have policies dictating that student must be given a passing grade in their classes, whether or not they attend those classes or not. So that metric is certainly not indicative of higher education.
Shitcago, Detroit, Cleveland, New York City, Flint, St. Louis, Atlanta. Different Shit, Same Stink.
Come on Ann, you’ve been here 27 years, even I (23 years) am a newbie compared to you!!
Good point. Isn’t it funny the people who freely butcher millions of babies right up to birth worry about infant mortality rates?
Funny and very sick.

“Why put liberals in charge nationally when the places where they have greatest control are plagued by homelessness, crime and dysfunction?”
We’ve been asking that for decades. They’re figuring it out NOW?
unintended consequences ping
“Self driving cars could go a long way towards fixing it provided they can be perfected.”
At age 75, I’m interested in this concept. It could give the elderly more freedom, and make the roads safer. The key word is “perfected”. Not sure that’s possible.
Pretty much all blue cities are hellholes for anyone who isn’t a government employee.
“Education is generally better in blue states, with more kids graduating from high school and college.”
No, not because education is better in blue states. But because blue cities and states have a tendency to NOT teach kids anything and graduate them anyways even though they can’t read or write.
