Wendy’s to start rolling out surge pricing with ‘AI-enabled menu changes’

Wendy's is planning to roll out dynamic pricing for its fast-food offerings starting as early as next year.

The chain will start testing the new pricing system "in some U.S. restaurants," Wendy's said in a statement to Global News. There are currently no plans to introduce this system in Canada — at least, not yet.

Dynamic pricing, also known as surge pricing, is the practice of setting flexible prices for products and services, meaning the price paid by customers can fluctuate based on market demands. Uber is a high-profile company that famously employs dynamic pricing. During busy times, the price of an Uber car-share ride is generally higher than during lower-traffic periods.

This is not going to work unless they update the prices on an app.

Nobody wants to go to a fast food restaurant without knowing ahead of time the approximate cost.

Does a pound of raw hamburger or a flat of buns cost more at noon than at 3:00 p.m.? I put this in the “dumb idea” category. Prolly won’t last long would be my guess.

I predict this is gonna blow up in their face.

Wait until someone is next in line and the price jumps before they can order.

Racist or Sexist or Homophobic or Transphobic restaurants accusations coming up.

I also foresee shootouts and brawls.

Management by accountants doesn’t usually work out. This is the same sort of stupidity as the bean counters at Kodak who wanted to sue Paul Simon for using “Kodachrome” in a song. Fortunately wiser heads prevailed. Apparently there aren’t any at Wendy’s.

Bad idea..

Hypotetically. a teen ager.. using cash. Goes on monday with a $20 bill. Buys burger, etc.. comes to $8/$9.. goes back the next day for the same thing with the cash they have left.. With Dynamic pricing it is now $12+. They don’t have enough cash. they walk away, go some place else.

Or a person goes to one wendy’s pays X.. Then goes to a different Wendy’s.. All the prices are different. “why is this one screwing me?” I paid X at that other one!

Or, you pull up to the drive through.. Wait in line. Get to the order point. Get sticker shock and want to pull out of line.

This is going to give a lot of people a bad experience.

They do this with apartments.

I was helping my brother look for an apt and the prices varied during the day. It was awful.

This will kill their business.

There is already always a cheaper option.

Uber gets away with it because of supply monopoly in many locations: no other real options sometimes.

In the case of Wendy’s just go down the block to another quick service place.

This is the kind of corporate greed people don’t like.

Didn’t Coke have a similar idea way back when with vending machines?

instead of “surge” pricing, they need to have defined “happy hours” where you know you can get a discount off the regular fixed price.

I am not a marketing genius, but it does not take one to figure that out

Wendy's may get a clue when customers walk in at lunch time and realize the price for the food they intended to purchase exceeds the amount of money they have to spend. Out the door empty-handed to find another place to purchase food.
