Bush put a stake in it by apparently establishing the rule (perhaps from his time as a CIA spook) never admit to who you really are and what you really want. Back in the day there were lefty republicans. Rockefeller was a liberal republican, everyone knew it and he didn't shy away from it and there were a well known group of them that admitted it too. Before Bush I there were people like that, out of the closet GOP lefties. after Bush I there weren't. Oh, there were but they all said they were rock ribbed severe conservatives and never meant a word of it.

Just look at who got nominated after Bush 1: Dole. Bush 2. McCain. Romney. It's pretty obvious who runs the 'conservative' party and what they stand for.

McCarthy now knows he cannot use the same old excuses for running business as usual. He didn’t keep his promises, the ones he made to get the job. That is non performance in any business contract. He would be fired if he was a house builder, or engineering firm, etc...
The problem will be to get someone astute enough to navigate the byzantine House, but push through real good change. Borders, crime, inflation, trans-insanity....anti business, getting climate change lunacy (while letting the Russians and Chinese, and Indians do what they want) out of there...
If he starts supporting those initiatives, he would win back some credibility...but he will need a real turnabout...to many golden parachutes for these legislators....

Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., forced the vote after McCarthy passed a bill to keep the government funded. Gaetz and seven other Republicans, along with all Democrats, voted to remove him

So why did the Democrats vote this way?

This reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from the movie Cool Hand Luke, “What we have here is a failure to communicate.”

It's been that way for decades. Congressional Republicans in both houses like to go along, to get along with the Democrats, especially when Republicans are in the majority. They are all, mostly gutless wonders.

Yep. Most of them work for their wealthy donors and not those that elected them to the office in the first place. I hear it takes an enormous amount of money to pay for a campaign to get elected to congress. There are only two ways to get that money. From large donation wealthy donors or small donations from a lot of people. We see what the first way gets us. Time to give the second way a try.

Perhaps Mr. McCarthy should have understood that occasionally, in D.C., you are held to keeping your promises.

Entrenched, career politicians seen to forget the a promise and a handshake are supposed to be taken very seriously.

I remember a (R) congressman from Fort Wayne, IN who PROMISED that he would only serve two terms. He was running for hid EIGHTH term when he got nailed schtupping a staffer.

He waits til he’s 58 or whatever to be a tough guy for the first time.

He told Gaetz to Go For it, turned out to be a mistake.

Loyal to Biden til the End.

Trump would have trouble as Speaker even with people who liked and supported him.

I’m a solid Trump supporter, but I know my man. He’s good at many things, but the qualities necessary to the Speaker’s job just aren’t in him. He’d alienate a lot of the people the position required him to schmooze. It would be a mess.
