Full transparency, we didn’t know enough about the rail worker situation to comment … until now.
Truth be told, when this editor saw ‘207 Republicans’ trending on Twitter and saw that it was the number of Republicans who voted against paid sick leave for rail workers it just didn’t make sense. We thought maybe it was not a stand-alone bill or something Democrats were holding hostage to pass other crap (as they often do), but nope.
It was its own thing.
Sooo … what the Hell?
Turns out, as usual with these things, if Democrats are vilifying Republicans there’s a lot more to the story, and this rail worker thing is no exception. Take a gander at this thread that does a fairly exceptional job of explaining what has really happened and why they voted against the leave.

Is there a summary explanation?
Republicans got rolled… again.
Summary please?
I don’t do Twitchy or Facebook or even Twitter or any other social media site, except FR.
If the Federal Government can impose a contract they could have imposed one that forced the railroads to give the unions the sick time they wanted. Biden and his handlers chose not to do that.
All totally political and unnecessary because there is a 90 day ‘cooling off”period in the RLA that should have been used so no holiday strike was even possible.
Thank you. I hate that a post requires one to sift through a social media sights postings in order to find the point. Hope you didnt have to spend that time on my account, but I appreciate your getting to the meat of it.
Republicans voted with the workers, and the Dems are lying about it.
1. Over half of the union members voted against it. (There are 12 unions involved and in a weird quirk of numbers, a majority of UNIONS voted yes, but not the unions with the largest number of members.) So calling it a "tentative agreement" is a lie when most members of one side didn't agree to it.
2. BIDEN’S REPRESENTATIVES HEARD THE ARGUMENTS REGARDING SICK LEAVE AND RULED THAT SICK LEAVE SHOULD NOT BE INCLUDED. This was in agreement with the rail worker’s management.
3. The House passed a bill to force workers to accept it anyway. This is what the Republicans voted against -- forcing the workers to accept what they rejected. The Dims are the ones trying to force the workers to accept the "agreement" without the off time policy the workers wanted.
Thanks
Presidential Emergency Board?? What on earth? Sounds like a workaround for constitutional limitations established for each branch.
Heading to work… I have 3 twelve hour shifts coming up, but this thread is important to discussed.
A lot of rationalizing. Bottom line, the Republican party finds a way in a contract that they cannot get 7 days of sick leave. A meaningless unnoticeable part of a contract for almost all Americans. But Republicans to the rescue!
Now they can move on to giving Biden and Ukraine everything they ask for and finding a way to cut Social Security. Oh, and standing up for stolen elections, ballot harvesting, ballot “curing” etc.
There is no way to spin this into a Republican win. The GOP stands against every blue collar middle class interest they can find. The Democrats already hate us, so where are we supposed to go? To the party that hates us -slightly- less?
I know it’s completely insane. But maybe if that is true, did the Republicans ever consider stepping out and saying, “Biden is shorting the workers 7 days of sick leave for their crony corporate and union leadership”? Force Biden to add the sick leave.
No, because that would upset their money donors and would risk some blue collar guys wanting to vote republican.
This reminds me of McConnell 3 weeks before the Georgia special election, coming out against Trump’s 1200 dollar stimulus and wanting it cut in half or something. Or like Rick Scott coming out 6 weeks before the election and saying Social Security needs to be cut.
Morons
“2. BIDEN’S REPRESENTATIVES HEARD THE ARGUMENTS REGARDING SICK LEAVE AND RULED THAT SICK LEAVE SHOULD NOT BE INCLUDED. This was in agreement with the rail worker’s management.”
Then maybe go on “Meet the Press” and talk about how Biden won’t give the poor sick railworkers 7 days of sick leave. Get on the Capitol steps surrounded by grimy rail workers in engineer hats and demand Biden cough up the 7 days for engineers with covid and childhood cancer. Lay it on thick.
But noooo, the GOP assumes a position of lordosis and lets Biden mount them up.
And as usual find a boogeyman that doesn’t have a chance.
Don’t point at the people responsible for this mess, starting in 2017, when a certain person, his hedge fund and Hunter Harrison brought their cutthroat management style, I’m sorry, their “efficiency model” to one off the big 4 railroads.
Cutting everything to the bone. Longer heavier trains. Not enough crews to run them. Overworked employees told that if they don’t like it, they can quit and be replaced. Only thing is, few of these employees are being replaced. It seems that the younger generation doesn’t want a job in the elements, working all
Hours of the day/nights/weekends/holidays. Living out of a bag and not seeing their families.
So yeah, blame it all on congress or whoever you want.
The unions may be powerful, but the folks running the companies and their board of directors have a lot of money and a lot of friends.
How much PTO do they get per year? If they get 80-120 hours that’s two-three weeks. I’m betting they get more than that. So if they get sick use some paid time off(PTO).
I had a friend who worked for Sante Fe for 30 years. When they moved the factory he was laid off. The union did nothing for him. Except take his union dues for all those years.
People seriously have no concept of the demands of operational railroad personnel. They are well paid, but their workload and shifts are unbelievable to those not close to it.
Talk to anyone who gets a firsthand look at it.
Instead the demoncraps are made to look like heroes, except for the one bad part and that's all on the GOP.
Who's is the minority leader? He should be fired. Definitely not considered for majority in January at all.
