“We’re billions short," he said. "Failure to provide this year a few extra billion dollars means you’re going to have famine, destabilization and mass migration.”
Beasley's intervention will sharpen minds as EU governments draw up plans to address the food crisis resulting from the war, with a proposal expected as early as Wednesday.
Russia and Ukraine are among the world’s biggest producers and exporters of grain. The disruption caused by the war has a direct impact on countries that rely on these supplies in the Middle East and Africa.
Half of Africa's wheat imports come from Ukraine and Russia, which is also a major fertilizer exporter. As for Ukraine, its exports have ground to a halt and its capacity to keep growing food this year is hanging by a thread. The crunch point will come in the fall, Beasley said, when the full impact of the war’s disruption is likely to be felt. “If you think we’ve got hell on earth now, you just get ready,” Beasley warned. "If we neglect northern Africa, northern Africa’s coming to Europe. If we neglect the Middle East, [the] Middle East is coming to Europe."
The economic conditions facing these parts of the world are now worse than they were in the run-up to the Arab Spring, he said. And it's not just the populations of Middle Eastern and North African countries who will feel the squeeze.
The WFP is already feeding millions of people further south in Sahel countries like Niger and Burkina Faso, where problems will worsen if global food prices stay sky high. “I’ve been warning our developed nations for several years now that the Sahel is going to collapse if we’re not careful,” he said.

You don’t have to go anywhere to ‘sign up’. You’re on Free Republic!
If you haven’t noticed, there are a few posters here who have never seen an ‘impending doom’ story that doesn’t give them a hard-on.
They should give that to farmers so they can plant more crops, should be in the form of crop insurance, low interest loans (supplies, equipment, and land), and for god sake kill the incentives for not planting crops.
This may come in handy. It’s pretty funny, too.
“You duck into the safest-looking abandoned house you can find and hold your breath as you listen for the approaching zombie horde you’ve been running from all day. You hear a gurgling sound. Is it the undead? No—it’s your stomach.
I'm actually spoiling for another fight this year because the code Nazi is a DemoCrap civil service hack and our supervisors are solidly conservative since last election swept his last supporter out of office.
Hoe is not “ho” as in the vp , this time spell check didn’t get me. 🤣
Actually, people would be a lot smarter if they spent more time on the working end of a hoe. IMO.

Not enough manure, and there is a big push to ban land applications of manure.
LOL
Europe used to be part of Africa. And so shall it be again. All those Nato weapons falling into the hands of islamic crazies. Beirut on steroids across an entire continent. If I were Poland, Hungary etc, I would be getting the walls up as high as possible before the seige starts. Weird thing is, Ukraine might just need a big brother slav down the track, when Turkey goes psycho with ottaman hunger for juicy Europe. Germany is already hitched to Turkey via immigrants. A Turkish, islamo nazi Deutschlanistan alliance. Crazy you say. We’ll see
It’s my garden and back yard. Manure is composted here and spread every spring. Problem with horse manure is weed seeds. Horses eat everything and it passes right through them. So weed spraying is needed. According to the news that’s gonna be scarce as fertilizer. Then there are fuel prices. And the plants you grow don’t mature overnight. It’ll be fall before we see what crop production does and what it’s selling for. It don’t hit store shelves on it own.
End the idiotic economic war and allow for a free flow of fuel, fertilizer, and food.
Sales of safe fuel, fertilizer, and food, and the financial mechanisms attendant thereto, should not be messed with to make political points.
Cool, I’ve been meaning to take off that COVID 15
Then you realize that famers won't be able to grow crops. Boy, everyone sure showed Putin. A little mass starvation is totally worth it!
And I'm not talking about you, specifically. Just the general tide of unthinking people who don't recognize the consequences of recklessly provoking global instability because Joe Biden is a belligerent moron. Diplomacy before the invasion should have been pursued, a summit held. Anything but what that idiot did. And here we are.
(Not a flattering picture!) That other stuff you imply....not going there!
Did you mean send the sack back? Jamaica? India? or Canada?
She should be home making Doha on the griddle!
Nice post. Thank you. The marketing firms hired to sell wars always do a great job demonizing and bringing out sympathy.
It is almost never black and white. Americans in particular seem prone to those two colors.
Meanwhile we have money for weapons and flying around Europe but food shortages, shrug. Oh well.
UN lies.
For reasons.
Not good reasons.
“All of this scare-mongering can cause shortages by itself. Because of it, people will stock up, causing temporary shortages. These temporary shortages will scare more people, causing hoarding, causing widespread shortages.
Could this be an intended result?”

Maybe I should buy our local farms’ supplies of SEED CORN to be sure of a plentiful supply of grits. 🙀🙀
They seem to want to make the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse happen
It WILL happen of course.
Keep praying and looking up.
