These Senate seats are up for election in 2020
Axios ^ | 5/6/19 | Rashaan Ayeh

There are 34 Senate seats up for election in 2020 — including a special election in Arizona — many of which are expected to be brutally competitive as Democrats vie for control of the Senate.

Quick take: The U.S. Senate is currently made up of 53 Republicans, 45 Democrats and 2 independents who caucus with the Democrats. Dems must win 3 or 4 seats to take control of the Senate — 4 to recapture control — or 3, if they also win the vice presidency.

Some of the fiercest races will come from Virginia, North Carolina and New Hampshire, according to a late 2018 analysis from FiveThirtyEight.

Republican senators representing left-leaning states — Susan Collins (R-Maine), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) and Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) — are considered among the Democrats’ clearest 2020 targets.

As Democrats from Trump-won states — Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.) and Sen. Doug Jones (D-Ala.) — are also vulnerable.

Some of the notable seats include Sen. Mitch McConnell's (R-Ky.) and Sen. Lindsey Graham's (R-S.C.).

OK so we know the Republicans need seats in 2020. The question is where they will come from. Jones in Alabama is an obvious pickup, but if Roy Moore is the nominee then that can't be a guarantee. The Democrats are going to go after Collins, McSally and Gardner like crazy but I'm not sure Tillis is as vulnerable as 538 says he is. On the Democrats, Shaheen may not be all that vulnerable depending on opponent. Peters won election in 2014 - an off year for Democrats - by 14 points so I don't see him as all that vulnerable. The rest are all solid blue states. So increasing the Republican majority might be iffy.

Yeah, why Roy Moore when we could have another Susan Collins.

How do you win the vice presidency?

Trump won 30 states in 2016. So in theory 60 seats for the GOP could happen one day.

McSally in Arizona is likely to have a terrible opponent. Unfortunately, she may be even worse.

North Carolina is left leaning state? I agree with the other two, but North Carolina is slightly purple at worst, but far from "left leaning".

I think it means the Dims will expect to win the 2020 Presidency—and plot and cheat until that happens.

Right, there are no conservatives in Alabama other than Roy Moore. It's only him, an Olympia Snowe-style Republican or Doug Jones, there's literally nothing else.

Nominating Roy Moore to lose the easiest Senate pick-up opportunity for the GOP in 2020 would be the very definition of The Stupid Party. Vote Mo Brooks or whoever in the primary, just no more Moore.

We’re defending more seats, aren’t we? Keep it at 53 and we’ll be thrilled, with a Trump reelection and win back the House. Then have some fun and we all troll AOC for being the cause of the loss of the House.

The only reason I think Lindsey Graham is acting as a conservative is due to the upcoming election. If he wins again he will revert back to what he really is. I have watched him become conservative during his reelection bids and then turn into a Democrat the day after.

If he wins he will be back bashing President Trump within 48 hours. I will admit my mistake if he does not but history is on my side. He is a corrupt professional politician and nothing more.

Sure hope Tillis has a strong challenger in the primary so we can send him home. What a mistake he’s been.

You are aware, are you not, that only one-third of the Senate is up for election in any given election year?

Yeah, saying Tillis was vulnerable surprised me too. I'm not sure I would believe that without knowing just who his opponent was.
