Newt Gingrich Has Climbed To The Top Of Donald Trump’s Vice-Presidential List

The Republican National Convention opens in Cleveland — we are all witnesses — in exactly 16 days.

That means that sometime over the next two weeks or so, we'll find out whom Trump has picked to be his vice-presidential running mate. Trump and his team have said all sorts of things about the timing of the announcement, including sometime soon and in the midst of the convention.

Either way, it's coming. And coming soon.

Trying to figure out a) whom Trump will pick or b) whom he is consulting in deciding whom to pick is, well, tough. But we do have some insight into where we stand in the process thanks to my WaPo colleagues Bob Costa and Karen Tumulty. They wrote this week:

Donald Trump’s campaign has begun formally vetting possible running mates, with former House speaker Newt Gingrich emerging as the leading candidate

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

No Never!

Please No!

Give Gingrich a back room job in the Cabinet.

He is just not up to VEEP

Two old white guys. One new and fresh with good ideas, and one who has little respect on either side of the aisle.

Don’t hand that millstone around your neck Trump!

I can’t understand the love for Newt Gingrich—this is a man who has no principles and is addicted to power—after he left the news, he cut commercials with Pelosi on global warming to stay relevant. If he end up as VP I hope Trump has good security and food tasters.

Give it a rest. Your passive-aggressive Trump-bashing isn’t fooling anybody.

Trump should also promise to nominate Ted Cruz to the Supreme Court

I’m not bashing Trump. I’m bashing those who refuse to hop aboard the Trump train. Anyone who without enthusiasm doesn’t support Trump is a worthless RINO. The Republican party is better off without them.

But Cruz is a Canadian, an illegal immigrant who has no proof that he’s ever become a US citizen. All his records are sealed. He’s not called “lyin’ Ted” for no reason.

A pick of Gingrich as VP is one of the few things that could convince me to take the Trump-as-Clintonite-plant hypothesis seriously.

I totally agree with you about Newt.

And, I thought Newt was 53, which would make him younger than Trump.

At least they married them. And Trump’s ex-wives are all fat and happy and have nothing bad to say about him .

No—It will not be Newt. Who would believe the Washington Post about anything dealing with Trump—except to tear him down and make Hillary President—we have the tyranny of the media.

Prophet Brigham Young had 22 wives (one 16 lived with him and had children with him. Between Trump and Newt they only have six wives(three each).

Newt is extremely PROLIFIC and I think he would be a definite asset leading up to the election.

His knowledge and workings of the House and Senate make him a BIGGER asset if he and Trump are elected.

I still remember Newt's ability as House Speaker to force Bill Clinton to move to the center and cut welfare.

I’m fine with Newt. Newt knows government backwards, and he is easily smart enough to avoid being rolled by the MSM. Also, the thought of a President Gingrich will make most of Trump’s enemies in Washington think twice about impeachment.

Between the two of them, they’ve married as many women as Brigham Young.

Yep - that's the important ting about them as potential leaders...................................................................................
