When Texas millionaire John Poindexter invited Justice Antonin Scalia to his remote ranch near the Mexican border, it was for a private party with about 35 other guests, a weekend of hunting and sightseeing on his painstakingly restored and cultivated 30,000-acre spread.
But when Scalia, 79, failed to appear for a morning excursion at 8 a.m. Saturday, Poindexter became concerned and went to his room, which has its own outdoor fire pit and a wall of windows overlooking the 22-room adobe ranch hotel, a lake and surrounding peaks of the Chinati Mountains.
"I had not seen him, and everyone else was up. I knocked loudly, Poindexter said. But Scalia was in a large room, the "El Presidente" suite, and the owner figured that perhaps the justice couldn't hear him.
Poindexter had just met Scalia, and although he found him "congenial" and they got on well at dinner the night before, his first thought was: "He's a Supreme Court justice, and if he doesn't want to be bothered."
Eventually, Poindexter entered the silent room, apprehensive.
"I was worried I was going to find something very tragic," he said.
There he spotted Scalia, still in his pajamas.
"He was in perfect repose in his bed as if he was taking a nap. His face wasn't contorted or anything," Poindexter said. "I went over and felt his hand and it was very cold, no pulse. You could see he was not alive." ...
Scalia's body was taken by a caravan of 20 law enforcement officers three hours west to Sunset Funeral Home in El Paso, where, after the family opted against having an autopsy, it was being prepared to be flown back to Virginia, according to Chris Lujan, a funeral director manager...

I had heard if one dies at home and has NOT been seen by a doctor in some time then they do an autopsy. I imagine Scalia has been under medical care for some time.
The average life expentancy in the US is 76 to 78 yrs. Scalia was quite overweight also.

We live in that sort of world, alas.
That sounds very nice, but I have to tell you that over the years I went to hundreds of deaths and very few who went by natural causes looked peaceful like they were just sleeping.
When someones heart stops it hurts and they wake up. When someone is having difficulty breathing... they wake up and they are very distressed. If they have a stroke it usually hurts to begin with and they wake up. Then they try to get to the bathroom or phone. Sometimes they don't make it out of bed, but most are on the floor or in the bathroom. Their eyes are partially open and they do not look like they are sleeping.
The people I went to who looked like they peacefully died in their sleep had over dosed on something, but their eyes are usually still half open and they don't look like they are sleeping. If he really looked like he was just sleeping... THAT IS THE MOST SUSPICIOUS THING THAT I HAVE HEARD SO FAR. If he looked peaceful, his eyes were closed, and he looked like he was sleeping, someone posed the body.
I would love to hear from others who have attended to a lot of dead people.
I had heard a report that said he wasn't feeling well the night before.
My sisters husband died suddenly. He complained of not feeling well and during the night he apparently went to get up and keeled over dead from the bed. He was late 70's.
We lived in an apartment smaller than that with six kids.
Oh dear. I hope he was the exception.
The man was an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, during a markedly unfriendly administration, in an isolated area, far from medical facilities, current health good enough to go hunting, in good spirits, only complaint was "tired" and in the morning he is dead.
He had nine kids and none of them think this is worth checking out?

I had always been told that the eyes would open because it took muscle control to close them. But I just read this article and it seems most have closed eyes.

Is this the John Poindexter who was in the Reagan or Poppy Bush administration? Whose wife was an Episcolopian priestess, who later became a Catholic?
Since you appear to be the resident expert on such matters, how long DOES it take for a body to be removed from a death scene to a location where an intensive autopsy can be performed?
And once there, how long does such autopsy take before all the results are in?
I was racking my brain thinking of dead people besides people who have been given or taken a lot of drugs who looked to me liked they were sleeping. And there is another group... that I have seen. That is people who have died from carbon monoxide poisoning.
But you are correct; when you die the muscles that hold your eyes shut relax and your eyes open partially. So it still doesn’t look that much like you are sleeping. To me it sounds like his body was staged before the guy saw it and the authorities arrived.

I was taught in nursing school, an unexpected death outside a health care facility required an autopsy. As does a death within a certain amount of time following a surgery. Seems like a decision the family came to quickly.
Sometimes it feels like it is all just slipping away.
