Statement from (Iowa) Secretary of State Paul Pate Regarding Misleading Mailer from Cruz
Oskaloosa News ^

Posted on 01/30/2016 1:07:24 PM PST by springwater13

Today I was shown a piece of literature from the Cruz for President campaign that misrepresents the role of my office, and worse, misrepresents Iowa election law. Accusing citizens of Iowa of a "voting violation" based on Iowa Caucus participation, or lack thereof, is false representation of an official act. There is no such thing as an election violation related to frequency of voting. Any insinuation or statement to the contrary is wrong and I believe it is not in keeping in the spirit of the Iowa Caucuses.

Additionally, the Iowa Secretary of State’s Office never "grades" voters. Nor does the Secretary of State maintain records related to Iowa Caucus participation. Caucuses are organized and directed by the state political parties, not the Secretary of State, nor local elections officials. Also, the Iowa Secretary of State does not "distribute" voter records. They are available for purchase for political purposes only, under Iowa Code." - Paul D. Pate, Iowa Secretary of State

Sadly, a lot of candidates get into these bizarre scare tactics to turn out voters. Cruz, while I like his positions, is totally uncharming and has no personal touch and doesn’t seem to realize how the average human being would react.

People keep talking about Cruz and Reagan, but there’s no similarity. Reagan did have a long and consistent conservative track record, even though I disagreed with many of the things he did as governor of CA, such as defunding the mental hospitals and releasing the patients on the world. But whether you agreed or not, he was good at communicating his opinions and it’s not for nothing that he was known as the “Great Communicator.”

Like Trump, who in my opinion is a nutcase who shouldn’t have a single voter, Reagan had an entertainment background and therefore he realized that you have to get the audience on your side. Cruz doesn’t seem to understand this and no matter how good his ideas are, he’s incapable of communicating them or attracting people to his side. He even drives away his friends. Very strange.

I can’t believe he’d be so... not thinking. being kind here. I haven’t seen it in the news channels yet - Trump needs to tweet about it so it gets noticed.

Btw, are you the poster that taught me to season cast iron?

“It was thought up by many political campaigns in the past. This appears to be a direct copy nearly of similar things sent out by campaigns for Republicans and Democrats alike years ago.”

You’re a liar. Prove what you just said. You’ve posted hundreds of post about this issue for the last 24 hours just wildly making stuff up.

You’re either a troll or genuinely demented.

Thanks, appreciate it.

Using my critical eye in reading these admissions, the “spokesman” (Rick Tyler) sent it. . .but I see nothing that conforms it was actually authorized by Cruz or the campaign.

Who knows.

Like all things in this election, I am careful as to what I believe.

Just me talking. . .

Coals and steaks ready. . .nice to live in Texas. . . .

Which is, I understand, why Trump makes you cringe. I’d cringe even worse at Trump if I didn’t watch how his stories play out. He bites off your head one week and then is fine with you the next week once the crisis of disagreement is over. It isn’t personal. I’d sooner err to the undiplomatic side, however, when facing obdurate opposition. The audience matters, and to be fair, Trump doesn’t do this a lot to friends. That’s analogous to why seeing Cruz (whether directly or by proxy) do it to friends hurts.

Very sad. I feel bad for Cruz. I wonder if he was personally behind this fiasco.

“No, it’s an old tactic used by many campaigns in the past. Whoever’s working on his mail operation just pulled it out of a standard playbook. “

Trying to shut him down? Hardly. In his position I would also feel compelled to clarify there is nothing official about the voting “report card” that the Cruz campaign sent out. It was designed to alarm, worry, and embarrass people. No doubt a tactic that someone somewhere thought was a good idea, but I don’t agree. I used to think Cruz was a viable and worthy opponent but I am really beginning to wonder.

I’ve seen plenty of that darn stuff, mostly from the RNC, and yes, I just pitch it. It’s still sleazy though, and I’m surprised, but not very surprised that Ted is doing it.

Who sent out anything like this before, in Iowa?

Here's an FR post with a over a 1000 comments that explain what the problem is hundred times over:

It's a big city ward heeler method of letting you know to vote if you want a favor. Obama verbalized it with his "get in their faces comment". It would just make me want to take out a knee or two.

There is no mailer that goes out without the candidates knowledge.

I don't know how many campaigns you've worked for, I've worked for my fair share. Not that I really feel the need to defend Ted Cruz here, but the reality is there's no way Cruz could approve every mailer that goes out. Simply stated, that'd take too much of his time and it's not feasible from a campaign perspective.

One of Cruz's higher level operatives in Iowa DID have to know about, and approve that mailer -- which was a really STUPID thing to do.

The unfortunate reality for Ted Cruz is this: it reflects on HIS CAMPAIGN. We can debate who in the campaign did it, argue around the edges of who's going to be held responsible, but the reality is it reflects on the CAMPAIGN, and therefore the Candidate.

What happens next and how bad the damage is to Cruz is entirely on Ted Cruz's shoulders. Not sure he can recover from this IMO.

He is a spokesman, like a communication director. I suspect this was not authorized by the campaign or Cruz.

Awfully strong words there, catnipman. You consider me whatever you want, I’ll not consider you anything at all, going forward.

However, one last reply from me to you: here is but one link showing that “vote shaming” political direct mail has been around for many years, used across the country, even in Iowa:

Now, goodbye to you.

Even nutcases can be crazy like a fox.

I think we can (humorously) call God a nut case. Who else would be moved to save this sad sad humanity?
