Politicoâs Kyle Cheney admitted that he fabricated a negative story about Ben Carson. At least, according to his own standards, he admitted the grievous journalistic sin.
In a story published early on Friday, Politicoâs Kyle Cheney authored a piece headlined âBen Carson admits fabricating West Point scholarshipâ with a subhed âCarsonâs campaign on Friday conceded that a central point in his inspirational personal story did not occur as he previously described.â
There were at least five major problems with the story:
The headline was completely false The subhed was also completely false The opening paragraph was false false false The substance of the piece was missing key exonerating information The article demonstrated confusion about service academy admissions and benefits
But other than that, A+++ work, Kyle Cheney and Politico.
It could take all day to parse the problems with Kyle Cheneyâs now-somewhat-cleaned-up hit piece on Carson, but letâs just look at his original introductory claims:

This was back in the dawn of the “Affirmative Action” concept when the Army and Westpoint were trying to increase the percentage of black cadets from 2% to 10%.
Carson was an excellent prospect and I can understand a four-star general telling him he could get a scholarship to Westpoint. Westpoint even advertised “scholarships” in the day.
Take a look

I don’t know how this all got started, other than to say politics is a down and dirty business big time at this level.
Bill Clinton’s underlings leaked a story one Friday in the 1990’s about the WH steward who cleaned up after he met Monica Lewinsky, then the underlings backed away from their original version forcing the newspaper given the leak (”Dallas Morning News”) to back off its story and look bad.
It was all deliberately done to help the cause of Clinton.
Did some GOPe underlings who support Carson as their hope of stopping Trump have a hand in planting this story and then forcing its retraction?
Ben Carson’s playing the tactic of blaming the liberal media is the old Republican Establishment tactic to suck conservatives into doing the GOPe bidding.
RIchard NixOn had his VP Spiro Agnew trash the liberal media to distract from his friendliness to Communists in China and the Soviet Union.
The GOPe agenda with Carson is clear. Suck in conservatives to divide the vote with Trump and Cruz so their man who I think is Rubio can be pushed through to win the Republican nomination for POTUS.
It looks like this situation is being ginned up with that in mind.
The candidate who attacks the media hardest may very well win. No one likes the media. They really are scum.
Now, as for Kyle Cheney`s concession that he fabricated his piece on Carson. He didn`t. That`s how I`m interpreting his decision to stealthily edit his piece to remove much of the error. But Ben Carson didn`t "admit" or "concede" to fabrication and he`s been tarred by Cheney as if he had. So I`ll keep the headline.
I think Politico was doing exactly what this author is the Federalist is doing with this piece. Creating a false headline and then droning on and on and parsing words and interpretations. Both are shoddy excuses for journalism, IMO.
I don't fault Carson for is interpretation of the ROTC thing. Seems harmless to me given he was a top ROTC performer and did meet Westmoreland. The only thing he can count on though is more of the same since he's put his life up through age 39 down on paper in his own words. Now, much older, those words are going to dog him because he is a Republican Candidate.
Very sad for liberals. Fantasies are supposed to have happy endings.

HOWEVER, since there is no tuition, room or board charges at West Point, scholarships stipulated "for tuition, room or board only" or based on need rather than merit cannot be accepted. If the scholarship can be used for textbooks, uniforms, or other expenses, inform the donor to make it payable to Treasurer, USMA. ..... and yes, if the scholarship goes into his cadet account, (as provided above) it will offset the cost of books, etc.
Sadly, the damage is done.
West Point is two words, not one.
Maybe to take Hillary’s name out of the headlines because she signed that form which I hope will have her decorating a jail cell by Christmas
Carson’s biggest problem is supporting the TPP and his weakness on gun rights.
The scary thing is that people support him for reasons other than really knowing his politics.
They support him because he is a nice man.
They support him because he is the most trustworthy candidate.
That’s the reason why these left wing outlets are doing their best to try and discredit him.
The good Doctor was already damaged when he floated, and then doubled down on, the plug-stupid pyramid theory. What politico did was disgusting, but given Carson's own gaffes, it hardly matters. The scum at politico basically threw a pie in the face of someone who has already tripped and performed faceplants a few times in a minefield of pies.
This clearly sounds like Carson was being actively recruited by West Point and even sounds as if Carson felt he was "special" in being offered a "full scholarship." In other words, almost as if Carson himself doesn't know that everyone who is accepted gets the "full scholarship" in the first place. And, secondly, the language certainly implies that it was a sure thing.
But then, the Carson campaign then characterizes the conversation with the General as "brief." Then in the press conference, he starts talking about being introduced to a bunch of unnamed West Point bigwigs saying that they could get him in.
What this sounds like to me is that Carson is probably exaggerating at minimum, or outright inventing details and conversations that never happened. Why focus on the General if they only had a brief conversation, when Carson's book refers to it as having "dinner" with the man? It moves from sitting at a table with the General to standing at the buffet line.
File a slander suit, Dr. Carson. Make them pay millions for their defamation. Let that be the new way to finance campaigns.
Kyle Cheney will go on publishing more delusions with no accountability whatsoever. Let the reader beware.
Trustworthy in this case equals nice.
I also think he is nice.
That isn’t a good reason to support him if his policies aren’t all that good.
We have to remember that he sits atop the polls at the moment. He isn’t some poor guy. We could stick up for him all the way to the the primaries and because of that he could get the nomination not for his policy stances, but for the fact he is nice and we stuck up for him.
Carson’s account was written how long ago? How much more detail could he recall back then? There is absolutely *nothing* about his description of events surrounding his ROTC service and encounter with West Point that merits the magnifying glass journalists refuse to apply to folks like Obama. There is absolutely *nothing* about his account that gives pause as if he had to fabricate. What? Do we want to go back a look at all the brain surgeries he’s done to see if those are fake, too?
